技术领域
本发明涉及一种液晶显示器件,更具体地,涉及一种在存储模式和动态模式之间可切换的双稳态手征性倾斜向列(BCSN)模式液晶显示器件。
背景技术
近来,由于社会已经真正进入信息时代,因此将所有类型电信号表现成可视图像的显示器件领域已经得到快速发展。特别是,由于LCD器件具有质量轻、薄和功耗低的特点,因此LCD器件已经被广泛用作阴极射线管显示器件的替代品。
现有技术液晶显示(LCD)器件利用液晶分子的光学各向异性和偏振特性。液晶分子由于薄且长的形状而具有确定的取向方向。可通过跨液晶分子施加电场来控制液晶分子的取向方向。换句话说,由于电场的强度或者方向改变,那么液晶分子的取向也会变化。由于液晶分子的光学各向异性而导致入射光基于液晶分子的取向发生折射,因此可通过控制光的透射率来显示图像。
由于包括薄膜晶体管(TFT)作为开关元件的LCD器件,也称作有源矩阵LCD(AM-LCD)器件,具有高分辨率和显示运动图像的优异特性,因此AM-LCD器件已得到广泛使用。
图1是现有技术液晶面板的剖面透视图。如图1中所示,液晶面板包括阵列基板10、滤色器基板20和液晶层30。阵列基板10和滤色器基板20彼此面对,阵列基板和滤色器基板之间夹有液晶层30。
阵列基板10包括第一基板12、栅线14、数据线16、薄膜晶体管(TFT)“Tr”和像素电极18。栅线14和数据线16形成在第一基板12上且彼此交叉以限定像素区域“P”。TFT“Tr”形成在栅线14和数据线16的交叉部分处。像素电极18形成在像素区域“P”中并连接到TFT“Tr”。
滤色器基板20包括第二基板、黑矩阵25、滤色器层26和公共电极28。黑矩阵25形成在第二基板22上,并且所述黑矩阵25为格子形状。黑矩阵25对应于第一基板12的非显示区域。第一基板12的非显示区域包括栅线14和数据线16以及TFT“Tr”。滤色器层26对应于像素区域“P”,并且滤色器层26包括红、绿和蓝滤色器图案26a、26b和26c。公共电极28形成在黑矩阵25和滤色器层28上。公共电极28与像素电极18产生电场,使得液晶层30受所述电场驱动。
尽管未图示,沿着第一基板12和第二基板22的边缘形成密封图案。所述密封图案防止液晶层30溢流。此外,第一和第二取向层可形成在第一基板12和液晶层30之间以及第二基板22和液晶层30之间。偏振板(polarization plate)可形成在第一和第二基板12和22中一个的外表面上。背光组件形成在第一基板12的背侧上以向液晶面板提供光。当经由向TFT“Tr”栅线14施加扫描信号以导通TFT“Tr”时,经由数据线16向像素电极18施加图像信号使得在像素电极18和公共电极28之间产生电场。结果,在液晶层30中的液晶分子受所述电场驱动以显示图像。
液晶分子可分成向列模式、近晶型模式和胆甾型液晶(cholesteric)模式。在这些液晶分子当中,广泛使用强烈散射光的向列模式液晶分子。
液晶分子的电光效应是通过改变液晶单元的光特性而产生电光调制(modulation)。电光效应是通过改变液晶分子的排列而产生的。
在电场的作用下,向列液晶分子的排列会连续地改变。一般地,向列模式液晶分子受扭转向列(TN)模式或者面内切换(IPS)模式下的电场驱动。向列液晶分子被排列成与基板平行且扭转。在TN模式LCD器件中,向列液晶分子受垂直电场驱动。在IPS模式LCD器件中,向列液晶分子受水平电场驱动。
近来,已经引入了各种显示器件来满足用户需求。特别是,引入了在厚度、重量和功耗方面具有优势的器件。此外,需要这些器件具有显示运动图像和e书或者e纸的功能。于是,需要在双模式,例如,在用于移动图像的动态模式和用于e书或者e纸的存储模式下可切换的LCD器件。为了满足这类需求,引入了双稳态手征性倾斜向列(BSCN)模式LCD器件。
在BCSN模式LCD器件中,存储模式使用倾斜状态和π扭转状态下的双稳态原理,而动态模式使用低弯曲状态和高弯曲状态之间的切换原理。然而,BCSN模式LCD器件中的存储模式和动态模式黑状态(black state)存在差别,很难提供用于补偿存储模式和动态模式这两种模式下的黑状态的补偿膜。即,由于通过补偿膜仅能优化存储模式和动态模式中一种模式下的黑状态,因此在存储模式和动态模式中另一种模式下的黑状态变差,使得在对比度方面存在不足。结果,在LCD器件的图像显示特性方面存在问题。
发明内容
因此,本发明涉及BCSN模式液晶显示器件,所述BCSN模式液晶显示器件基本上避免了由于现有技术的局限和不足而导致的一个或多个问题。

图2是示出根据本发明示例性实施例的BCSN模式LCD器件的像素区域的平面图,图3是沿图2的线III-III截取的截面图。图2关注作为第一基板的下部基板。
如图2和图3中所示,BCSN模式LCD器件100包括:第一基板101、第二基板201、在第一和第二基板101和201之间的液晶层190、和补偿膜195。像素区域“P”限定在所述第一基板101上,并且作为开关元件的第一薄膜晶体管(TFT)“Tr1”、第一至第三电极166、173和175和反射板155形成在所述第一基板101上;第二TFT“Tr2”以及第四至第六电极266、273和275形成在所述第二基板201上。BCSN模式LCD器件100还可包括偏振板(polarization plate)197。
第一基板101包括显示区域和在显示区外围的非显示区域。例如,第一基板101可包括在显示区域两侧的第一和第二非显示区域。将像素区域“P”定位在显示区域中。将第一TFT“Tr1”定位在每个像素区域“P”中,并且反射电极155可具有凸起形状。液晶层190包括BCSN液晶分子。换句话说,BCSN模式LCD器件100包括BCSN液晶层190。
第一基板101由透明玻璃、柔性塑料或者柔性膜形成。第一栅线103和第一数据线130设置在第一基板101上,第一栅线103与第一数据线130之间具有第一栅绝缘层112。第一栅线103和第一数据线130彼此交叉以限定像素区域“P”。
基本与第一栅线103平行的公共线106设置在第一基板101上。公共线106跨相邻像素区域“P”延伸。公共线106一部分的宽度大于其他部分的宽度以形成第一存储电极107,从而增加存储容量。或者,第一存储电极107可具有与公共线106相同的宽度。

第一钝化层140设置在第一TFT“Tr1”、存储电容器“StgC”和第一数据线130上。即,第一钝化层140覆盖第一TFT“Tr1”、存储电容“StgC”和第一数据线130。例如,第一钝化层140可由无机绝缘材料形成。此外,第二钝化层145设置在第一钝化层140上。第二钝化层145可具有不平坦的顶表面,且由有机绝缘材料形成。换句话说,第二钝化层145具有凸起的顶部形状。
第三钝化层150设置在第二钝化层145上,并且反射板155设置在第三钝化层150上。第三钝化层150可由无机材料形成,反射板155可由高反射的金属材料形成。例如,反射板155可由铝(Al)或者Al合金形成。反射板155覆盖每个像素区域“P”的整体。即,反射板155覆盖像素区域“P”,并且反射板155与第一栅线103和第一数据线130部分重叠。反射板155具有第一开口“op1”。
由于第二钝化层145的缘故,使得第三钝化层150和反射板155也具有凸起的顶部形状。换句话说,第三钝化层150和反射板155具有不平坦的顶表面。由于反射板155的凸起的顶部形状防止了镜面反射,因此提高了反射效率。
图3示出了第一至第三钝化层140、145和150。或者,可省略第一和第三钝化层140和150。如果有机绝缘材料的第二钝化层145接触第一有源层120a,而没有无机绝缘材料的第一钝化层140的话,那么第一TFT“Tr1”的特性将变差。如果金属材料的反射板155层叠在有机绝缘材料的第二钝化层145上而没有无机绝缘材料的第三钝化层150的话,那么反射板155和第二钝化层145之间的粘合强度会降低。因此,为了防止这些问题,通常使用第一和第三钝化层140和150。
第四钝化层160设置在反射板155上。第四钝化层160由有机绝缘材料或者无机绝缘材料形成,并且第四钝化层160具有大于约1微米的厚度。结果,第四钝化层160具有平坦的顶表面。当由于反射板155的缘故而使得第四钝化层160具有凸起的顶部形状时,BCSN液晶层190具有不一致的厚度。因此,第四钝化层160具有足够厚度以提供平坦的顶部表面。
当第四钝化层160由有机绝缘材料形成时,可在反射板155和第四钝化层160之间形成由无机绝缘材料形成的第五钝化层(未示出),以补偿反射板155和第四钝化层160之间的粘合强度。
穿过第一至第四钝化层140、145、150和160形成第一漏极接触孔163以暴露出第二存储电极137。第一漏极接触孔163对应于反射板155中的第一开口“op1”。另一方面,当形成第五钝化层(未示出)时,也经由第五钝化层形成第一漏极接触孔163。
板状的第一电极166设置在第四钝化层160上。第一电极166通过第一漏极接触孔163接触第二存储电极137。结果,第一电极166电连接到第一TFT“Tr1”。第一电极166覆盖每个像素区域“P”整体以完全重叠反射板155。第一电极166由诸如铟锡氧化物(ITO)和铟锌氧化物(IZO)这样的透明导电材料形成。
第六钝化层170设置在第一电极166上。第六钝化层170可由无机绝缘材料形成。第二和第三电极173和175设置在第六钝化层170上。第二和第三电极173和175基本平行于第一栅线103且彼此隔开。第二和第三电极173和175跨过相邻像素区域“P”延伸且为线性条状(bar)。第二和第三电极173和175可由诸如ITO和TZO这样的透明导电材料形成。公共线106可定位在第二和第三电极173和175之间。
图2和图3示出了一个第二电极173和一个第三电极175。或者,至少两个第二电极173和至少两个第三电极175可设置成彼此交替布置。例如,第二电极173和第三电极175可按如下顺序布置:第二电极173、第三电极175、第二电极173和第三电极175。第二和第三电极173和175的总数可为六、八或者十。
每个第二电极173的端部连接到在第一基板101的显示区域的一侧即第一非显示区域处的第一辅助线(未示出),而每个第三电极175的端部连接到在第一基板101的显示区域的另一侧,即第二非显示区域处的第二辅助线(未示出)。于是,经由第一辅助线向第二电极173施加第一电压,经由第二辅助线向所有第三电极175施加不同于第一电压的第二电压。
尽管未示出,但是第一取向层(alignment layer)形成在第二和第三电极173和175以及第六钝化层170上。
另一方面,第二栅线(未示出)和第二数据线230设置在第二基板201上,第二栅线(未示出)和第二数据线230与第二基板之间具有第二栅绝缘层212。第二栅线和第二数据线230彼此交叉。第二栅线和第二数据线230分别对应于第一栅线103和第一数据线130。
第二TFT“Tr2”定位在第二栅线和第二数据线230的交叉部分处。第二TFT“Tr2”包括第二栅线209、第二栅极绝缘层212、第二半导体层220、第二源极233和第二漏极236。第二栅极209连接到第二栅线,并且第二源极233连接到第二数据线230。结果,第二TFT“Tr2”电连接到第二栅线和第二数据线230。第二半导体层220包括本征非晶硅的第二有源层220a和杂质掺杂的非晶硅的第二欧姆接触层220b。第二漏极236与第二源极233彼此隔开。
平坦化层245设置在第二TFT“Tr2”和第二数据线230上。即,平坦化层245覆盖第二TFT“Tr2”和第二数据线230。
滤色器层183和黑矩阵181和202设置在第二基板201和第二TFT“Tr2”之间,所述滤色器层183包括红、绿和蓝滤色器图案“R”、“G”和“B”。滤色器层183对应于每个像素区域“P”。黑矩阵181和202对应于第二数据线230、第二栅线和第二TFT“Tr2”。
板状的第四电极266设置在平坦化层245上。第四电极266由诸如ITO和IZO这样的透明导电材料形成。第四电极266具有与第二TFT“Tr2”的第二漏极236对应的第二开口“op2”。
图3示出了设置在平坦化层245上并具有第二开口“op2”的第四电极266。或者,第四电极266可设置在第二TFT“Tr2”下方。例如,第四电极266可设置在滤色器层183和第二基板201之间。
第七钝化层270设置在第四电极266上。穿过第七钝化层270和平坦化层245形成第二漏极接触孔263。第二漏极接触孔263对应于第二开口“op2”,使得第二漏极236通过第二漏极接触孔263暴露出来。
第五电极273和第六电极275设置在第七钝化层270上。第五电极273通过第二漏极接触孔263接触第二漏极236,以电连接至第二TFT“Tr2”。第五电极273和第六电极275彼此平行,并与第一基板101上的第二和第三电极173和175交叉。第五电极273和第六电极275为线性条状。
第六电极275用作参考电极。于是,第六电极275跨过像素区域“P”延伸。或者,第六电极275可从第三辅助线(未示出)分支,以与第五电极273平行,所述第三辅助线形成为与第二栅线平行。
尽管未示出,第二取向层形成在第五和第六电极273和275以及第七钝化层270上。
BCSN液晶层190设置在第一和第二基板101和201之间,所述BCSN液晶层190包括向列液晶分子,所述向列液晶分子具有用于使得向列液晶分子扭转的手征性掺杂剂,并且补偿膜195设置在第二基板201的外侧上。补偿膜195是λ/2延迟膜(retardation film)。此外,偏振板197设置在补偿膜195的外侧上。
下文中,将说明BCSN模式LCD器件的驱动原理。根据本发明的BCSN模式LCD器件由反射型驱动而无背光单元。
图4是示出根据本发明示例性实施例的BCSN模式LCD器件的驱动原理图。图4示意性示出了第一和第二基板,第一至第六电极以及在BCSN液晶层中的液晶分子。
在BCSN模式LCD器件中,在第一基板101上的第一取向层(未示出)和在第二基板201上的第二取向层(未示出)沿着相同方向排列。第一和第二取向层的取向方向与第二和第三电极173和175的长度方向基本垂直。即,第一和第二取向层的取向方向与第五和第六电极273和275基本平行。
如图4(a)中所示,BCSN液晶层190中的液晶分子192的主轴最初沿着第一和第二取向层的取向方向设置。换句话说,BCSN液晶层190中的液晶分子192的主轴最初设置成与第二和第三电极173和175垂直。此外,液晶分子192具有倾斜状态,这里,在BCSN液晶层190中的液晶分子192的主轴与第一和第二基板101和201表面成预定角度。即,BCSN液晶层190中液晶分子192的主轴朝第一和第二基板101和201的表面倾斜。BCSN模式LCD器件100在具有倾斜状态的存储模式和动态模式下具有黑状态(black state)。
在BCSN模式LCD器件100的存储模式中,当向第一基板101上的第一电极166和第二基板201上的第四电极266分别施加不同电压,以开启第一和第四电极166和266之间的垂直电场时,最初具有倾斜状态的液晶分子192的倾斜角变化而不改变液晶分子192的方位角(azimuth angle),如图4(b)中所示,使得液晶分子192具有高弯曲状态。
当在第一和第四电极166和266之间的垂直电场关闭、液晶层190具有高弯曲状态时,在与第一和第二取向层相邻的液晶分子之间的液晶分子192关于与第一取向层相邻的液晶分子192旋转180度,如图4(c)中所示。结果,液晶分子192具有π扭转状态。由于所述π扭转状态,液晶分子192具有双稳态原理,使得BCSN模式LCD器件100提供存储模式。
由于本发明中使用的具有手征性掺杂剂的向列液晶分子在倾斜状态和π扭转状态下是稳定的,因此向列液晶分子能够保持这些状态而不需其他电场,使得BCSN模式LCD器件具有半永久的存储模式。
另一方面,当在第二和第三电极173和175之间的下部水平电场开启,液晶层190具有π扭转状态时,液晶分子192具有倾斜状态,如图4(a)中所示。
由于液晶分子192在倾斜状态下是稳定的,因此BCSN液晶层190保持倾斜状态而不需第一和第四电极166和266之间的垂直电场。在具有倾斜状态的正常黑模式下驱动液晶分子192而不需在第二和第三电极173和175之间的连续电场。即,在不进一步向第二和第三电极173和175施加电压的情况下,BCSN模式LCD器件100在存储模式下长时间提供相同图像或者字母。因此,功耗最小化。
因此,BCSN模式LCD器件100可用于诸如e书或者e纸之类的应用,这种e书或者e纸显示字母达数毫秒或者数小时,具有降低的功耗。结果,这些应用可长时间使用而不需对电池充电。
另一方面,BCSN模式LCD器件100可在动态模式下驱动。在动态模式下,向第二基板201上的第五和第六电极273和275施加不同电压,以在具有倾斜状态和黑状态的BSCN模式液晶层190中产生上部水平电场。由于在倾斜状态下的液晶分子192的主轴不与第五和第六电极273和275之间的上部水平电场方向平行,因此液晶分子192沿着上部水平电场旋转,使得BCSN液晶层190具有扭转倾斜状态,如图4(d)中所示。液晶分子192的旋转角度取决于第五和第六电极273和275之间的电压差,即,上部水平电场的强度。因此,通过控制第五和第六电极273和275之间的电压差,BCSN模式LCD器件100在动态模式下可显示白色和灰色。
如上所述,BCSN模式LCD器件100的存储模式和动态模式两者在液晶分子192的倾斜状态下都具有黑状态。即,两种模式在液晶分子192的单种状态下都具有黑状态。一层补偿膜既可补偿存储模式下又可补偿动态模式下的黑状态。于是,即使当在存储模式和动态模式中的一种模式下驱动BCSN模式LCD器件100时,也可通过所述补偿膜来补偿黑状态下的问题,使得所述器件可显示改善的黑色质量。结果,所述器件具有改善的对比度。
图5是示出根据本发明示例性实施例的BCSN模式LCD器件中元件的位置关系图。出于解释的方便,将在第二基板201外侧上的偏振板的光传输轴限定为基准轴。
在根据本发明示例性实施例的BCSN模式LCD器件100中,第二和第三电极173和175(图2)的长度方向与基准轴成约165度的角度,所述第二和第三电极173和175彼此平行且设置在第一基板101(图3)上。第一和第二取向层的取向方向即摩擦方向与基准轴成约75度的角度,所述第一和第二取向层分别设置在第一和第二基板101和201上。此外,第五和第六电极273和275的长度方向与基准轴成约80度的角度,所述第五和第六电极273和275彼此平行且设置在第二基板201(图3)上。作为λ/2延迟膜的补偿膜的光传输轴与基准轴成约15度的角度。
通过上述位置关系,本发明中的BCSN模式LCD器件在存储模式和动态模式这两种模式下都具有最佳的黑状态。
在模拟实验中,本发明中的BCSN模式LCD器件在存储模式和动态模式两个模式下都具有约1000∶1的反射对比度(reflective contrast ratio)。
对于本领域技术人员很明显,在不脱离本发明的精神和范围的情况下可对本发明作出各种改进和变形。由此,本发明意在覆盖本发明的各种改进和变形,只要它们落在所附权利要求及其等价物的范围内即可。
Claims (20)
1.一种双稳态手征性倾斜向列模式液晶显示器件,包括:
第一基板;
在第一基板上的第一电极,所述第一电极为板状;
覆盖所述第一电极的第一绝缘层;
在所述第一绝缘层上沿第一方向的第二电极和第三电极,用于产生第一水平电场;
面对所述第一基板的第二基板;
在所述第二基板上的第四电极,所述第四电极为板状;
覆盖所述第四电极的第二绝缘层;
在所述第二绝缘层上沿第二方向的第五电极和第六电极,用于产生第二水平电场;以及
在所述第一基板和所述第二基板之间的双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层,
其中所述第一电极和所述第四电极用于产生垂直电场。
2.如权利要求1所述的器件,其中在存储模式和动态模式这两种模式下在所述双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层的倾斜状态下显示黑色。
3.如权利要求1所述的器件,还包括设置在第二基板的外侧上的λ/2延迟膜和偏振板。
4.如权利要求3所述的器件,其中所述λ/2延迟膜定位于所述第二基板和所述偏振板之间。
5.如权利要求3所述的器件,其中所述λ/2延迟膜的光传输轴与所述偏振板的光传输轴成15度角度。
6.如权利要求3所述的器件,还包括:
覆盖所述第二电极和第三电极的第一取向层;和
覆盖所述第五电极和第六电极的第二取向层;
其中所述第一取向层和所述第二取向层的取向方向与所述偏振板的光传输轴成75度角度。
7.如权利要求3所述的器件,其中所述第二电极和所述第三电极的长度方向与所述偏振板的光传输轴成165度角度。
8.如权利要求3所述的器件,其中所述第五电极和所述第六电极的长度方向与所述偏振板的光传输轴成80度角度。
9.如权利要求1所述的器件,其中所述第二方向不同于所述第一方向。
10.如权利要求1所述的器件,还包括:
在所述第一基板上的第一栅线;
在所述第一基板上的第一数据线,并且所述第一数据线与所述第一栅线交叉;
在所述第一基板上的第一薄膜晶体管,并且所述第一薄膜晶体管连接到所述第一栅线和所述第一数据线,
其中,所述第一电极电连接到所述第一薄膜晶体管。
11.如权利要求10所述的器件,还包括:
在所述第二基板上的第二栅线;
在所述第二基板上的第二数据线,并且所述第二数据线与所述第二栅线交叉;
在所述第二基板上的第二薄膜晶体管,并且所述第二薄膜晶体管连接到所述第二栅线和所述第二数据线,
其中所述第五电极电连接到所述第二薄膜晶体管。
12.如权利要求1所述的器件,还包括在所述第一基板和所述第一电极之间的反射板。
13.如权利要求12所述的器件,其中所述反射板具有不平坦的顶表面。
14.如权利要求1所述的器件,其中所述第一基板限定显示区域以及在显示区域侧部的第一和第二非显示区域,并且其中所述第一电极设置在与所述显示区域对应的部分处。
15.如权利要求14所述的器件,还包括在所述第一非显示区域处的第一辅助线和在所述第二非显示区域处的第二辅助线,
其中所述第二电极的端部连接到所述第一辅助线,并且所述第三电极的端部连接到所述第二辅助线。
16.如权利要求1所述的器件,还包括在所述第二基板和所述第五电极之间的滤色器层。
17.如权利要求16所述的器件,其中所述第四电极定位于所述滤色器层和所述第二基板之间。
18.如权利要求16所述的器件,其中所述第四电极定位于所述滤色器层和所述第五电极之间。
19.如权利要求1所述的器件,其中所述双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层具有用于显示黑色的倾斜状态而不需向第一至第六电极施加电压,
其中,通过在第一和第四电极之间的所述垂直电场,所述双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层自倾斜状态具有高弯曲状态,
其中,通过去除垂直电场,所述双稳态手征性向列液晶层自高弯曲状态具有π扭转状态,
其中,通过在第二和第三电极之间的所述第一水平电场,所述双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层自π扭转状态具有倾斜状态,
其中通过在第五和第六电极之间的所述第二水平电场,所述双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层自倾斜状态具有扭转倾斜状态,
并且其中,通过去除所述第二水平电场,所述双稳态手征性倾斜向列液晶层自扭转倾斜状态具有倾斜状态。
20.如权利要求19所述的器件,其中在倾斜状态、高弯曲状态和π扭转状态下提供存储模式,并且其中在倾斜状态和扭转倾斜状态提供动态模式。
