本发明涉及打印头和使用打印头的系统。
背景技术
一般,喷墨打印机包括从墨供给源至喷嘴通道的墨通道。该喷嘴通道的终端为喷嘴孔,墨滴从喷嘴孔喷出。墨滴喷射通过由致动器对墨通道中的墨加压来控制。该致动器可以为压电偏转器,热气泡喷射发生器或静电偏转元件。典型的打印头包括储存器和喷射组件。该喷射组件具有一组墨通道,该组墨通道带有相应的喷嘴孔和相关的致动器,来自每一个喷嘴孔的墨滴喷射可以独立地控制。在按命令喷射(drop-on-demand)的打印头中,在喷射组件和打印基片相对于彼此运动的同时,起动各个致动器以有选择地将墨滴喷射在图像的特定象素位置上。在高性能的喷射组件中,一般喷嘴孔的直径为50μm或更小,例如大约25μm,以100~300喷嘴/英寸的间距隔开,其分辨率为100~3000dpi或更高,形成的墨滴尺寸大约为1~70皮升(pl)或更小。墨滴喷射频率一般为10kHz或更大。
这里引入其全部内容供参考的Hoisington等人的U.S.5265315说明了具有半导体主体和压电致动器的喷射组件。该组件主体由硅制成,可经刻蚀以形成墨腔。喷嘴孔由附接至硅主体上的独立的喷嘴板限定。压电致动器具有压电材料层,根据所加的电压,该压电材料层改变几何形状或弯曲。压电层的弯曲给在沿着墨通道设置的泵送腔中的墨加压。
在Andreas Bibl等人于2002年7月3日提出的、题为“打印头”、美国专利申请No.10/189947中描述了喷射组件的另一些例子。这里引入上述申请的全部内容以供参考。
对于给定的电压,压电材料的弯曲量与材料的厚度成反比。结果,当压电层的厚度增加时,需要的电压增加。对于给定的墨滴尺寸,为了限制电压需求,可以增加压电材料的偏转壁面积。大的压电壁面积同时也会要求泵送腔相应地更大,这使得设计复杂,例如对于高分辨率打印,需要维持小的孔间隔。
一般,打印头可以包括一个或多个喷射组件。打印系统可以在基片相对于打印头的一次通过或多次通过中打印。打印头可以用于喷射墨和/或其他流体-例如用于电子元件的材料(例如导电材料)或用于平板显示器的彩色滤光材料。
发明内容
在本发明的一个方面中,一种打印装置包括喷射组件和外壳,所述喷射组件包括将微滴喷射在基片上的多个喷嘴,所述外壳限定出一打印区,在该打印区中,喷射组件在基片上进行打印,所述外壳包括导入与控制外壳的环境有关的材料的入口。
本发明的这个方面的实施例可包括一个或多个下述特征。
所述材料为蒸馏水、干燥空气、乙醇、MEK或清洁剂。所述干燥空气具有预定的温度。所述材料适于抑制细菌生长。所述材料与微滴相容。所述打印装置还包括设置在所述外壳内的传感器。所述传感器可提供用于调节所述外壳内的环境的信号。所述外壳包括一个出口。
在本发明的另一个方面中,一种打印方法包括:提供限定出打印区的外壳,所述外壳包括导入与控制外壳的环境有关的材料的一个入口;设置喷射组件,所述喷射组件包括在打印区内将微滴喷射在基片上的多个喷嘴;以及通过所述入口导入与控制所述外壳的环境有关的材料。
本发明的这个方面的实施例可以包括一个或多个下述特征。
所述材料为蒸馏水、干燥空气、乙醇、MEK或清洁剂。所述干燥空气具有预定的温度。所述材料适于抑制细菌生长。基于微滴的特性选择所述材料。所述打印方法还包括在所述外壳内设置传感器。所述打印方法还包括使所述传感器提供用于调节所述外壳内的环境的信号。所述外壳包括一个出口。
本发明除了其他优点以外具有以下优点,即,所述外壳限定出一个调节打印区,在所述打印区中保持对打印头喷嘴有利的环境。例如,打印区的湿度可以维持在使喷嘴变干燥或在喷嘴上形成冷凝的可能性极小的水平上。根据墨的特性,可以将其他材料(例如,乙醇,MEK)导入所述外壳中。这样,可以保持打印头喷嘴的可靠性,并且减少维护和更换需求。
包括氢和氮的气体材料也可导入所述调节打印区中。当使用溶剂或有害化学品时,所述外壳有利于保护操作者的健康和安全。
清洁剂或抑制细菌生长的其他材料也可以导入,这在与在食品上打印有关的应用中特别有用。清洁剂可用于保持卫生的环境,以便不污染包括食品或药品的产品。

具体实施方式
参见图1和图2可看出,4个打印头组10用作生产线(production process)的一部分,在该生产线中,基片12利用传送器14在打印头组下方运动。在这个实施例中,传送器14支撑1~4英尺宽的基片,并可以高达1600英尺/分钟的速度运动。每一个打印头组10包括一个喷射组件的阵列,每一个喷射组件与一个或多个墨储存器连接。当基片在打印头组下面通过时,打印头组10在基片上打印文稿或图像。打印头组10由安装支架16的一端支撑并可在其上运动,所述安装支架16设置在传送器14上方,并与支撑支柱18连接。
外壳19设置在打印头组10之间,并位于传送器14的表面的正上方,形成调节的打印区21。该调节的打印区提供对打印头组的喷嘴有利的环境,以使其可靠性改善。外壳19包括与要导入外壳中的材料源连接的入口20。
例如,在一个实施例中,该材料为蒸馏水,用于在打印区中形成所希望的湿度水平。使环境湿度较大可以延长沉积的墨变干的时间,并可防止喷嘴变干。当喷嘴在相当长时间里没有喷射墨时,存在墨变干并最后喷嘴被堵塞的危险。潮湿的环境可解决这个问题,并可改善“喷嘴开放时间”。湿度水平一般根据水基墨(water-based ink)的类型选择。与提供湿度相反,该材料源可以为干燥空气流(加热的或冷却的),该干燥空气流在打印头喷嘴前面通过,以减少在打印头组的喷嘴上形成冷凝的可能性。对于其他类型的墨,可通过入口20将不同的材料导入外壳19中。例如,导入外壳19中的材料源可以为乙醇或MEK。这样,可以保持打印头喷嘴的可靠性和减少对维护和更换的需要。
在另一些实施例中,可以导入清洁剂或抑制细菌生长的其他材料,这在与在食品或药品上打印有关的应用中特别有用。
在一些实施例中,在外壳19内可以放置传感器(没有示出),以测量在调节打印区内的状态。传感器可提供用于通过增加/减小导入的材料调节外壳19内的环境的信号。这样,形成闭环控制系统。
在一些实施例中,选择源材料使之与墨的特性相适应,例如选择可溶解在所选择的墨中的源材料或者选择可以用与具体的打印应用相适应的所希望的方式,与所选择的墨起化学反应的源材料。
以上已经说明了本发明的许多实施例。但应理解,在不偏离本发明的精神和范围的条件下,可作各种改进。例如,虽然图示了4个打印头组支撑在安装支架16上,在其他实施例中,也可将更少或更多的打印头组设置在安装支架16上。外壳19还可包括其他的入口以及出口,用于控制调节打印区中的环境。

Claims (24)
1.一种装置,包括:
包括将微滴喷射在基片上的多个喷嘴的喷射组件;
限定出打印区的外壳,在该打印区内,所述喷射组件在基片上打印,所述外壳包括导入与控制所述外壳的环境有关的材料的入口。
2.如权利要求1所述的装置,其中,所述材料为蒸馏水。
3.如权利要求1所述的装置,其中,所述材料为干燥空气。
4.如权利要求3所述的装置,其中,所述干燥空气具有预定的温度。

通过所述入口导入与控制所述外壳的环境有关的材料。
