Abstract

技术领域

背景技术
等离子体显示设备包括前基板、后基板以及形成在前基板与后基板之间的放电单元。另外,等离子体显示设备通过由真空紫外线激发荧光体而显示图像,真空紫外线当放电单元中的惰性气体由于高电压而放电时产生。
图1是示出表面放电型AC等离子体显示面板的放电单元的结构的分解透视图。
表面放电型AC等离子体显示面板通过在充当上基板10和下基板20的两个平坦玻璃基板上形成多个膜并且将两个平坦玻璃基板彼此接合而制造。上基板10和下基板20布置成彼此面对。扫描电极Y和维持电极Z形成在上基板10上,并且寻址电极X形成在下基板20上。

图2示出用于以分时方式驱动等离子体显示面板的驱动脉冲的电压波形,在分时方式中一个帧分成多个子场。等离子体显示面板一般以将单个帧分成多个子场的分时方式来驱动,在多个子场期间导致不同数目的放电操作,以表达灰度级。每个子场分成:复位时段,用于初始化所有放电单元;寻址时段,用于选择一扫描线和在连接到所选择的扫描线的放电单元之间选择待放电的放电单元;以及维持时段,用于根据放电操作的数目表达灰度级。
例如,在以256个灰度级显示图像的情况中,对应于1/60秒的一个帧时段(16.67ms)分成八个子场SF1到SF8,如图2中所示。子场SF1到SF7中的每个分成复位时段、寻址时段和维持时段。
对于每个子场,复位时段和寻址时段是相同的。但是,对于每个子场,维持时段和在维持时段中施加到电极的维持脉冲的数目是不同的,并且以2n(n=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7)的比率增加。以此方式,由于对于每个子场,用于根据放电操作的数目实施灰度级的子场的维持时段是不同的,所以有可能通过子场来表达灰度级,并且有可能通过子场的组合来显示单个图像帧。
图3是在维持时段中施加到电极的维持脉冲的电压波形。维持脉冲的一个周期包括能量恢复上升时间(ER_up时间),维持上升时间(Sus_up时间),以及能量恢复下降时间(ER_down时间)。
如上所述,根据等离子体显示设备的传统驱动方法,在维持时段中施加到电极的维持脉冲的波形是固定的。即,维持脉冲的单个周期期间的能量恢复上升时间、能量恢复下降时间和维持上升时间不变化。
发明内容
因此,本发明的特征是至少解决相关技术的问题和缺点,从而提供了一种其中放电路径被增大以增强亮度和放电效率的等离子体显示设备,并且提供该等离子体显示设备的驱动方法。

根据本发明的等离子体显示设备及其驱动方法不限于下面描述的实施例,而可以有与下面实施例不同的等离子体显示设备及其驱动方法的很多实施例。
下文中,根据本发明实施例的等离子体显示设备及其维持驱动方法将参照图4到图11来更详细地描述。
为了在等离子体显示面板上显示图像,通过将单个帧分成多个子场来驱动等离子体显示面板。每个子场分成:复位时段,用于初始化所有放电单元;寻址时段,用于根据图像数据选择待放电的放电单元;以及维持时段,用于通过维持放电显示图像。
在维持时段期间,扫描电极Y和维持电极Z被交替施加以维持脉冲,使得当施加维持脉冲时,维持放电发生时,可以表达灰度级。
一般地,单个维持脉冲包括:其间维持脉冲上升到维持电压的高电平(最高量值)的能量恢复上升时间(ER_up),用于保持维持电压的高电平的维持时段(Sus_up),以及其间维持脉冲从高电平下降到低电平的能量恢复下降时段(ER_down)。
图4是示出将维持脉冲施加到等离子体显示面板的维持驱动器的电路图。该维持驱动器包括:能量恢复单元400,连接在面板和源电容器Cs之间;电感器L,与面板一起构成谐振电路;以及第一开关Q1和第二开关Q2,并联连接在源电容器Cs与电感器L之间。源电容器Cs在维持放电期间恢复充入面板电容器中的能量,并且将所恢复的能量返回给面板电容器。
维持脉冲供给单元410并联连接在电感器L与面板之间,并且包括:第三开关Q3,连接到功率供给电压Vs并且被接通以供给维持电压的高电平;以及第四开关Q4,连接到地电压GND以将面板的电压减小到地电压GND。
当第一开关Q1被接通时,充入源电容器Cs的能量被供给到面板电容器,使施加到面板的维持脉冲的量值在能量恢复上升时间(ER_up时间)期间增大。之后,当第三开关Q3被接通时,维持脉冲的量值达到维持电压的高电平,并且维持电压在维持上升时间(Sus_up时间)被保持。
如果第二开关Q2被接通,则充入面板电容器的能量被恢复到源电容器Cs,使在能量恢复下降时间(ER_down时间)期间维持脉冲的量值减小。之后,如果第四开关Q4被接通,维持脉冲的量值下降到地电压。
一般地,维持脉冲在维持时段期间被交替地施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。即,维持电压Vsus供应于扫描电极Y与维持电极Z之间,从而在维持时段期间导致维持放电。在发生于维持时段期间的维持放电期间在扫描电极Y与维持电极Z之间产生的壁电压持续地导致维持放电。
根据本发明,为了使用在放电单元中产生的空间电压来增强放电效率,在维持脉冲的高电平维持时段中、低电平维持时段中或地电压维持时段中的维持放电完成之后,开关Q1、Q2、Q3和Q4立刻达到开路,从而浮动扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。在扫描和维持电极的浮动在维持放电完成之前启动的情况中,不能充分地导致放电,使得未产生足够的空间电压,导致放电效率的恶化。
因此,在开关Q1、Q2、Q3和Q4开路的情况中,维持脉冲的电流不能流到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z,使得壁电荷不再积累在电极上,但是空间电压产生。该空间电压导致连续的维持放电。
维持脉冲中的浮动时段的起始点优选地是当维持脉冲施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z时的时间点,并且然后放电完成。可替换地,浮动时段的起始点是维持脉冲的高电平维持时段或低电平维持时段的中途点,或者在维持脉冲的高电平维持时段或低电平维持时段的后一半中。
浮动时段优选地是大约100到1000纳秒。如果浮动时段短于100纳秒,大量的壁电荷累积,但是空间电荷不足够地产生以形成临界空间电压。即,当浮动时段是100纳秒或更大时,空间电荷足够地形成为可用于提高后图像(afterimage)特性并减少功率消耗的空间电压。
另一方面,如果浮动时段超过1000纳秒,归因于重新复合,由于浮动而形成的空间电荷消失,空间电荷的量减少,使得空间电压不能达到临界电平。因此,浮动时段被设置为小于1000纳秒,使得空间电荷足够地形成为可用于减少后图像和功率消耗的空间电压。
浮动时段优选地是大约300到1000纳秒。
附图中所示的维持脉冲的波形以展开的形式示出,以更详细地解释维持电压施加时段和浮动时段期间等离子体显示面板的工作。
参见图5A到5C中所示的波形,维持电压时段Sus_up被减小以增大浮动时段。在施加维持脉冲波形的情形中,维持脉冲的量值在能量恢复上升时间E/R_up期间上升之后,维持放电被立刻启动,并且然后最终达到维持电压Vsus。
因此,维持电压Vsus必须被保持,直到维持放电完成。接下来,当维持放电结束时,维持电压Vsus然后被浮动,从而禁止壁电压但产生空间电压。
其间至少一个电极被浮动的浮动时段F是大约100到1000纳秒。如果在完成放电之前,维持电压Vsus未被保持而电极被浮动,则放电不能完成,使得放电效率恶化。
参见图5A到5C,当维持脉冲上升到高电平或下降到低电平时,需要大约100到200纳秒的浮动时段F’以接通和关断开关装置。
在施加数据脉冲到电极的情况中,浮动时段F’被设置以防止当开关装置变成开路时电流流到电极。这导致当打开开关装置时脉冲波形延迟浮动时间F’。
图6A和6B示出其中在维持时段中使用的维持脉冲的高电平和低电平分别是1/2Vsus和-1/2Vsus的维持脉冲的波形。
与图6A到6B中所示的维持脉冲的波形相比,维持放电的时间点彼此一致,但是被浮动的电极是不同的。如图6A和6B所示,尽管被浮动的电极不同,但产生了空间电压的相同量值,使得可得到相同效果。
在此情形中,浮动时段F优选地是大约100到1000纳秒。

图12A到12B中所示的维持脉冲的波形与图9A到9B中所示的维持脉冲的波形在形式和放电时序方面是相同的,但是不同之处在于图12A到12B中当电极被施加以地电平时导致浮动,但是图9A到9B中当电极被施加以正维持电压Vsus时导致浮动。
在图5A到5C、6A到6B、7A到7H、8A到8D、9A到9B、10A到10D、11A到11D以及12A到12B中所示用于驱动等离子体显示面板的维持脉冲中,根据本发明实施例,发现扫描电极Y和维持电极中的至少一个在发生并然后完成维持放电之后被浮动。
图5A到5C、6A到6B、7A到7H、8A到8D、9A到9B、10A到10D、11A到11D以及12A到12B中所示的维持脉冲中的浮动时段F是低电压维持时段的1/2倍或更短,或者是高电压维持时段的1/2倍或更短。更具体地,平坦化时段F优选的是100或1000纳秒。
由此描述了本发明,明显的是,其可以以许多方式变化。这样的变化不应看作背离本发明的精神和范围,并且将对于本领域技术人员是明显的所有这样的修改旨在包括在后面的权利要求的范围内。
Claims (19)
1.一种等离子体显示设备,包括:
第一基板;
第二基板;
第一电极和第二电极,形成在所述第一基板上;以及
维持驱动器,用于将维持脉冲施加到所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个,
其中,在维持时段期间,所述维持驱动器在所述第一电极与所述第二电极之间施加维持电压,并在由所述维持电压导致的维持放电完成之后,立刻将所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个浮动100到1000纳秒。
2.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个浮动300ns到1000ns。
3.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将维持电压施加到所述第一电极,并且然后浮动所述第二电极。
4.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器浮动所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个,并且然后将下降到第一预定电压的信号施加到所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个。
5.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器浮动所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个,并且然后将上升到第二预定电压的信号施加到所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个。
6.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中其间所述第一和第二电极之一被浮动的浮动时段是所述维持脉冲的低电平维持时段的一半或更短。
7.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中其间所述第一和第二电极之一被浮动的浮动时段是所述维持脉冲的高电平维持时段的一半或更短。
8.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述第一和第二电极之一在所述维持脉冲的低电平维持时段的中途点处或在所述低电平维持时段的后半个时段中被浮动。
9.如权利要求2的等离子体显示设备,其中所述第一和第二电极之一在所述维持脉冲的低电平维持时段的中途点处或在所述低电平维持时段的后半个时段中被浮动。
10.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器交替地浮动所述第一和第二电极。
11.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将量值为所述维持电压的1/2倍的电压施加到所述第一和第二电极之一,并且然后浮动施加有所述电压的电极。
12.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将量值为所述维持电压的1/2倍的负电压施加到所述第一和第二电极之一,并且然后浮动施加有所述负电压的电极。
13.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将地电压施加到所述第一和第二电极之一,并且然后浮动施加有所述地电压的电极。
14.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将所述维持电压施加到所述第一和第二电极之一,并且然后浮动施加有所述维持电压的电极。
15.如权利要求1的等离子体显示设备,其中所述维持驱动器将负维持电压施加到所述第一和第二电极之一,并且然后浮动施加有所述负维持电压的电极。
16.一种等离子体显示设备的维持驱动方法,所述方法将维持脉冲施加到形成在等离子体显示面板的上基板上的第一电极和第二电极中的至少一个,所述方法包括:在维持时段期间,
在所述第一和第二电极之间施加维持电压;并且
在由所述维持电压导致的维持放电完成之后,立刻将所述第一和第二电极中的至少一个浮动100ns到1000ns。
17.如权利要求16的等离子体显示设备的维持驱动方法,其中所述浮动被执行300ns到1000ns。
18.如权利要求16的等离子体显示设备的维持驱动方法,其中所述浮动被执行所述维持脉冲的高电平维持时段或低电平维持时段的1/2倍的时间或更短。
19.如权利要求16的等离子体显示设备的维持驱动方法,其中所述浮动在所述维持脉冲的高电平维持时段或低电平维持时段的中途点或更晚被启动。
