Lorsque l'outil se meut vers l'intérieur à une position correspondant au rayon r#, le mouvement rotatif normal de la came est retardé d'une distance angulaire n# qui correspond Åa l'angle ; M' représenté a la fig. 17. Lorsque l'outil se meut encore plus vers l'intérieur à une position correspondant au rayon/'" ;
La fig. 25 représente la fa#on dont peut être déterminée la forme du gabarit de fig. 26. Sous la commande du gabarit 26w et de la touche 2/, l'outil de coupe 25 est maintenu a une distance ;

Process and machine for cutting the teeth of strawberries.
The present invention relates to a method and a machine for cutting the teeth of milling cutters by rotating a blank relative to H. a cutting tool and advancing the tool longitudinally to the axis of rotation of the blank.
According to the procedure, the cutting tool is put out of contact with the blank before each feed movement and returned after each feed movement to an operative position with respect to a. the blank, which is determined at each return movement in accordance with the predetermined profile to be given to the teeth of the milling cutter.
The machine for carrying out this method comprises a mechanism working automatically to bring the tool out of contact with the blank at the time of each advance movement of the tool longitudinally of the axis of the blank, and a device comprising a fixed jig having the predetermined contour: and working to limit each of the successive return movements of the tool to the working position, so
This method and this machine are particularly suitable for the manufacture of cutters the profile of which covers entirely or in part parts which are considerably inclined with respect to the axis of the cutter, but the invention is not limited in this respect. .

1 (fig. 1 to 8) indicates the main frame or bench on which the other parts of the machine are mounted. To make tine 2 and a tailstock 3. A mechanism 4 (fig. 1 and 3) is provided to mount and operate the tool. Mechanism 4 is actuated longitudinally along the blank in a manner described below. The doll 2 is rigidly fixed to the bench forming a body with this bench. The tailstock 3 is adjustable along the bed to receive blanks or roughing shafts of different lengths.
The doll 2 is provided with a rotating spindle 5 mounted in bearings 6 and 7.
On the spindle is fixed a chuck with collar 8 of the usual shape and which is suitable for clamping either the tail of the blank to be shaped and stripped, or a shaft on which this blank is mounted. As shown in FIG. 2, the blank A is mounted on a shaft B which is clamped by the chuck 8. To rotate the spindle 5, a helical wheel 9 is provided which meshes with a worm 10 mounted on a rotating shaft 11.
The tailstock may be of conventional construction and is adjustable along slides 12 and 13. It can be fixed in the adjusted position by means of a claw 14 controlled by a lever 15. The tailstock spindle is indicated at 16 and has a point 17. The spindle can be actuated longitudinally by means of a screw 18 under the control of a hand wheel 19.
To tighten the sleeve in the adjusted position. a handle 20. As shown, the tip 17 is fitted in engagement with the end of the shaft B.
The tool holder mechanism 4 comprises a carriage 21 which is movable longitudinally along slides 22 and 23 of the bed 1.
A slide 24 carrying the cutting tool is mounted so as to effect a transverse movement with respect to the carriage 21.
In most figures of the drawing, a non-rotating lathe tool 25 is shown, and such tool is preferably used for many categories of work.
But you can, when you prefer, use it if you want, you can use a larger tool.
The machine is suitable for cutting a blank having a variable diameter. The diameter can vary uniformly throughout the blank, so as to give a uniform taper, or it can vary in any desired way so as to give the blank any predetermined profile other than straight line. The variations in the diameter of the blank are determined by moving the slider 24 with the tool transversely, and to adjust and control the transverse movements, a jig and a jig key are provided, one carried in a fixed position on the bench 1, and the other carried by the slide 24. As shown, there is provided a jig 26 carried by the bench and a key 27 carried by the slide 24.
The jig 26 has exactly the same profile as that which is to be given to the blank, and the key 27 has exactly the same shape as the cutting tool 25. The key is removably attached to the slide so that it can be be removed and replaced by another key corresponding to a tool having a different shape than that of the tool 25 which is shown.
To carry the template 26, a bracket 28 is provided rigidly fixed to the bench 1. In order to allow adjustment, the template 26 is attached to a slide 29 (fig. 2) which is movable lengthwise along an appropriate guide. 30 provided on the console, a screw 31 being provided to effect a longitudinal movement. The slider can be locked in the adjusted position by means of screws 32, 32 attacking a listel 33. To allow easy fixing of the template, the slider 29 is provided with a T-slot 34 adapted to receive T-bolts 35 passing through the template.
To further help to hold the jig in place and to prevent free movement of the jig, a hook bolt 36 (fig. 8) has been provided which when tightened serves to pull the jig back against the profile which should be given to the blank A, and by means of the slider 29 the jig is adjusted longitudinally in a position exactly opposite the blank. As the carriage moves longitudinally, the slide 24 carrying the tool 25 moves transversely so as to keep the key 27 in engagement with the template.
So that the tool can receive a relief movement to strip exactly the various teeth of the blank, it is not rigidly fixed to the slide 24, but is movable on this slide transversely to the axis of rotation of the blank . On the slider 24 is mounted a slider 37 which is transversely movable along a slide.
The slider 24 partly carries a mechanism for causing regular reciprocating relief movements of the slider 37 and the tool in a suitably adjusted relationship with the rotary movement of the blank. So that the tool can be adjusted for blanks of different sizes, there is provided a tool-holder slide 38, movable transversely on the slide 37. To move the slide 38 on the slide 37, a screw 39 is provided rotating at the by means of a handwheel 40. The slider 38 is provided with a transverse T-groove 41 and a tool holder 42 is held in place by means of T-bolts 43 penetrating the groove.
The frame has an opening for receiving the tool, provided with a horizontal upper wall 44 exactly at the level of the axis of the blank. Tool 25 is held in place with its upper surface engaging the horizontal wall 44 of the housing and is held in this position by means of a wedge 45.
It should be noted that with the required construction the tool is kept in parallel as it moves longitudinally to advance, or inward and outward to follow the profile. a rotary draft cam 46 (fig. 8 and 13) which is mounted on the slide? 4 so as to be mobile with him. As shown, the cam is mounted on a rotary longitudinal shaft 47, rotating in bearings 48 and 49 (fig. 1) of a bracket 50 suspended on the front of the slide 24.
A lever 51 is pivoted between its ends on the slide 24 and is provided at its lower end with a roller attacking the cam 46.
The upper end of the lever engages a stop 52 of the slider 37. A helical spring 53 is interposed between the slider 37 and the slider 24, and tends to press the slider 37 forward, so as to keep the stop 52 in position. contact with the upper end of the lever 51. It can be seen that when the cam 46 rotates: the lever 51 oscillates, and thus gives a reciprocating movement to the slide 37 and to the tool 25.
The shape of the cam 46 is such that the slider 37 advances relatively slowly at a uniform speed, so that the tool can make a clearance cut, and is then returned relatively quickly, so as to withdraw the tool and the tool. put in position for another cut.
As indicated above, the cam 46 is actuated in adjusted relation to the rotation of the blank. That is to say, the cam 416 makes a determined number of revolutions for each revolution of the blank, this number being determined by the number of teeth of the blank. If the blank has ten teeth, the cam makes ten revolutions for one revolution of the blank so that a relief movement is given to the tool as each tooth moves relative to it.
To rotate the cam, the cross shaft 11 is used. Directly below the shaft 11 is a shaft 54 which is mounted partly in the main frame and partly in a bracket 55 attached to this frame. .
To connect the two shafts 11 and 54, a toothed wheel 56 (fig. 1 and 2) is provided on the shaft 11, a toothed wheel 57 on the shaft 54. and a pivot 59 carried by an adjustable grooved arm 60. The arm 60 is carried by a hub 61 which helps to support the shaft 11. The speed ratio between the two shafts 11 and 54 can be changed by removing one or both toothed wheels 56 and 57 and replacing them with other wheels of different diameters, and it.
It is evident that the idler wheel 58 can be adjusted to mesh with these wheels of different diameters. In said console 55 is mounted a vertical shaft 62 and this shaft is actuated from the shaft 54 by means of a bevel gear 63. The shaft 62 serves to actuate by means of a bevel gear 64 a grooved longitudinal shaft 65. This shaft is carried partly in a bearing ifi fixed to the bench and partly in bearings 67 of a bracket 68 fixed to the carriage 21.
A worm () 9 is mounted and keyed on the shaft 65 between the bearings 67. This worm meshes with a helical wheel 70 which is connected to a transverse shaft 71.
The helical wheel and the shaft are established and rotate in a bearing 72 provided in the bracket 68 and in a bearing 73 provided on an additional bracket 74 which is attached to the bracket 68 (Fig. 12). On the shaft 71 slides an angle wheel 75 (fig. 7 and 12) which rotates in a bearing 76 of said console 50 suspended from the front end of the slide 24.
Angle wheel 75 meshes with angle wheel 77 of shaft 47. Wheel 77 and shaft 71 are keyed or otherwise conveniently arranged; so that the wheel rotates but is at the same time free to move transversely to the machine when the slide 24 is actuated. As the wheels and 77 are both carried by the console 50, they are kept in gear at all times.
It can be seen that with this construction, force is transmitted from the shaft 11 by the various parts which have been described, to the shaft 65 and is transmitted from the shaft 65 to the shaft 47 and to the cam 46 , the connection between the shaft (35 and the shaft 47 being such that the free moves one complete revolution for each tooth of the blank.
The machine can be adjusted for blanks having different number of teeth, by changing the toothed wheels 56 and 57, as already described.
As already indicated,! The machine is suitable for cutting cutters with helical teeth. In order to be able to properly strip cutters of this kind, it is necessary to carry out the movements of the tool in particular in relation to the rotary movement of the roughing, so that the stripping can be done in accordance with the teeth of I ' propeller.
It has been indicated that the relief movements of the tool are governed by the rotary movement of the blank, and any given position of the tool, this ratio r # gl # is fixed and defined; but as the carriage moves to bring the tool to a new cutting position, it is necessary to vary the relationship between the clearance movements of the tool and the rotary movement of the blank. This fact is well known in itself even in the application of skinning means for skinning cutters with inclined teeth and it has its reason in the following:
Assuming the tool working at any point along the length of ia. tooth whose face is inclined with respect to a. the axis of the blank and a revolution begins with the cutting edge of a tooth in the plane of the cutting edge of the tool, the end of the revolution will find the cutting edge of the same tooth still in the plane of the tool if it has remained in! in the same position.
However, if the tool has been tongitudinally advanced with respect to the blank, the new point on the cutting edge of your tooth. because of the inclination thereof, will not be in the plane of the cutting edge of the tool, but it will be above or below this plane following the direction of the inclination of the cutting edge of the tool. your tooth. When the tool therefore begins its draft movement at the same point, because the tooth will not meet the tool at the same time.
It is therefore necessary to vary the relation between the rotation of the blank and the :) draft movements of the tool # a measure which is determined by the inclination of the cutting edge of the tooth. In the present case, this is done by increasing or decreasing the rotation of the blank with respect to the relief movements of the tool. by giving an additional movement to said cutting edge or by moving it back in accordance with the direction of the inclination of said edge so as to bring it in line with the cutting face of the tool at the time when this last begins his movement of flanking.
Conversely, the movement of the draft blade can be advanced or delayed so as to advance or delay the tool relief movements so that the new point of operation of the cutting edge can be brought in line with the cutting face. cutting the tool when the latter begins its clearance movement.
The helical wheel 9 is not directly connected to the spindle 5, but is indirectly connected by means of a suitable gear 78 (fig. 3) which can change the rotation of! a spit. This gear is rotatable as a whole and comprises a rack and a pinion, the rack being movable longitudinally in accordance with the longitudinal movements of the carriage 21. A sleeve 79 coaxial with the spindle 5 is carried in bearings 80 and 81 (fig. 13). and 14) provided in the doll. The inner end of the sleeve extends and rotates into the end of the spindle. On the bracket is mounted a box S2 which can turn on it.
The helical wheel 9 is rigidly nxed to the sleeve 79. In the sleeve 79 slides a shaft 83 having teeth of mesh 84. The shaft 83 is c) set to the sleeve 79 so to shoot with tui. In bearings of box 82 is established and rotates a transverse shaft 85 carrying a pinion 8u which meshes with teeth 84. A shaft 87 also rotates in box 82.
The two straight shafts 88 and S9 (fig. 13 and 14). A third shaft 90 also rotates in box 82.
To this shaft is fixed a worm 91 which meshes with the helical teeth t9 provided in the periphery of spindle 5, near its end. On the side of the box 82 opposes the toothed wheels 88 and 89. a gear is provided to connect the shafts 87 and 90. A toothed wheel 93 is mounted on the shaft 87. and a toothed wheel 94 is mounted on the shaft. shaft 90.
An adjustable rai- ned 95 is mounted on box 8:? and carries adjustable journals 96 and 97 on toothed wheels respectively; crazy!) S and 99.
The shaft 83 has at its outer end a 100 Å ring groove collar. A longitudinal guide pin 101 is rigidly fixed to the main frame near the shaft 83.
On the ankle 101 is mounted # c and slides a console 102 provided with a fork 103 entering the groove of the collar 100. The console 102 is drilled to receive a longitudinal bar 104 which is connected # c # to its end of right to the carriage 21. The console 102 can be clamped on the bar 104 in a relative position as desired, this tightening being done by means of screws 105, 105 provided with levers 106.
It can be seen that when the carriage 21 is moved longitudinally along the bane, the bar 104, and with it the console 102, move simultaneously and in the same measure. Due to the engagement of the fork 103 with the collet 100, the shaft 83 is similarly moved, in action. Ii. thus the teeth of er # mesh 81. When moving the rack longitudinally. the pinion 86 rotates and this movement is used by means of the gear and the various shafts which have been # described, # turn the worm 91.
The rotational movement of the worm screw 91 is used to make the spindle 5 rotate relative to the box 82 and # the spindle 79. It should be noted, as indicated above, that the entire gear It is evident that the relative movement (the spindle relative to the sleeve serves only to increase or decrease to some extent the rotation of the spindle.
But the relative movement of the spindle is determined by the longitudinal movement of the rack 84, which in turn is determined by the longitudinal movement of the carriage 21 and the cutting tool 25 which it carries.
As your stripping cam moves you with a frequency which is normally uniform and as the spindle and the blank undergo a change in speed of rotation which is in exact proportion to the longitudinal and tool movement. it is evident that the undercut movements are made in such a relation with the draft that they conform to heterogeneous teeth.
The degree of variation of your spindle and spindle rotation can be changed according to the degree of inclination of the helical teeth, by removing either or both gears. '3 and 94. and replacing them with wheels of different diameters. The toothed wheels, idlers 98 and:!) Can be exactly adjusted to generate with these wheels of different diameters.
It is also possible to cause the relative movements of the spindle in one or the other direction. according to the inclination of the teeth in hetea in one or the other direction. As shown, the machine is set to cut (your teeth with left # helixes. To cut teeth with a right propeller, you remove your toothed wheel 98 and your wheel 99 is adjusted to mesh directly with your toothed wheels 03 and 94.
When we unsnap a blank with straight deutsches, with the ticu of helical teeth, the gearing is made inoperative, for example by loosening; your screws 105 so as to allow the bar 104 to slide freely # through the console 102. By loosening the screws 1t it is possible to adjust the carriage beforehand without changing the position of your spindle and of the draft. When the tool and the # @@@@@@ @@@@ the handles 106 so as to connect the carriage to the mechanism to control the rotation of the spindle.
The blank A represented in FIGS. 7 and 8, is provided with teeth whose front cutting faces are exactly radial. But it often happens that it is desired to obtain a milling cutter with serrated or hooked teeth, that is to say teeth whose front cutting faces are on plumb with respect to the radial lines.
To cut a blank with skimmed faces, it
is necessary to vary the computer ratio
between the clearance movements of the tool and the rotary movement of the blank as the tool moves in or out to conform to the different diameters of the blank. When it is necessary to cut blanks of this kind, the mechanism described above is somewhat modified.
Fig. diagram 17 shows one way to vary this ratio. In this figure, t can be seen as a fragmentary sectional view along the maximum radius ^ of a cutter C with indented faces. When controlling the jig and the key, the cutting tool 35 is located
a distance from the axis of the blank and is in position to engage the tip of the tooth shown and cut there the exact die line d-d. The section of the weaker tooth radius is shown at t '.
For this radius, if no special arrangement is made, the tool 25 will be in) a position indicated in dotted lines distauee'ùe the axis of the blank. But due to the inclined cutting face of the blank. the tooth of the blank will not be in engagement with the tool and will be separated from it by the angle n.
However, the tool will immediately begin its inward relief movement even though! the rough tooth has not yet reached it, and the result will be a cut of an inaccurate draft line key-d '. For an even smaller radius o "of the blank, as shown in <", the result will be similar except that the tip of the tooth will be s # by # e of the tool by a plus @@@@@ @ @@@@ @@ "@@ @@ @@ @@@ @@@ inaccurate draft line d" -d "will be further removed from the exact draft line dd.
In order to avoid errors which would occur in the manner shown in fig. 17, the relation between the draft movements of the tool and the rotary movement of the blank is varied, so that the tool is, with regard to its draft movements, always in the same position when it engages with the leading edge of the tooth. This is shown in Figs. 18 and 19.
Fig. 18 shows the tool at the same distance from the axis of the lebauehe shown in FIG. 17, but the time at which the clearance movement begins has been delayed so that the blank is then in the desired position to be attacked by the tip of the tool. The tooth is therefore cut with the exact flank line d-cl. Likewise in fig. 19. the tool is at the same distance r "from the axis of the blank as shown in Fig. 17, but the clearance movement has been delayed so that the blank is in position to be driven. by the tip of the tool when the actual clearance movement begins.
The tooth is therefore cut with the exact flank line d-d. 011 sees that the operation as represented in ng. 17 and 19 are not affected or depend in any way on the longitudinal inclination of the cutting faces. In other words, it does not matter whether the cutting faces are helical or straight.
The required variations in the relationship between the undercut movements of the tool and the rotary movement of the blank can be achieved either by changing (usually by advancing) the movement of the blank. or by changing (usually by delaying) the movements of the tool.
It has been found simpler to delay the movements of the tool, and this delay is particularly desirable when means are provided, as in the present example, for changing the movement of the blank in order to properly delay itself. the movements of the tool, it is possible to use a modified construction as shown in FIGS. 20 and 21. This construction is similar to that already described except that a shaft 71 ^ and an angle wheel 75 "replace the shaft 71 and the toothed wheel 75 described above.
The shaft 71 ", instead of being provided with straight grooves, is provided with inclined cam grooves 71 ', and the angle wheel 75" is provided with pins 75' adapted to penetrate said grooves. Fig. 1 is a development of the shaft 71 "and shows the inclined cam grooves. When the pins 75 'are in the position shown in solid lines, a position which corresponds to the radius /'. The cam 48 is in the position to immediately actuate - the clearance movement of the tool towards the inside.
When the tool moves inwards to a position corresponding to the radius r #, the normal rotary movement of the cam is delayed by an angular distance n # which corresponds to the angle; M 'represented in FIG. 17. When the tool moves further inward to a position corresponding to radius / '";
the cam is further delayed by an angular distance n # corresponding # the angle m # rep # sent # # in fig. 17. This deflection of the tool causes the tool to always be in position for its relief motions when the leading edge of the tooth reaches the tool.
It does not matter that the blank does not have the maximum raavon as long as the angle wheel 75 "is set to assume the exact positions along the camshaft 71". In order that this can be done properly, the jig is preferably constructed to match the radius of the blank to be cut.
If the cutter C must have a maximum radius r, the # draft 26c has the maximum point of haul # a distance r from a line for example from the line of the centers of bolts 35, 35. If it is cut a milling cutter D having a maximum radius r #, we # establish the template 26d with 'from the line of the bolt centers. If it is a question of cutting a milling cutter E having a maximum radius r ", the template 26e is established with the point of maximum radius at the distance r" from the line of the centers of the bolts.
Construction of the jigs in the manner described secures the position of the sliding gear 75 "on the shaft 71" at positions corresponding exactly to the various radii of the blanks.
Another way to vary the relationship between the clearance movements of the tool and the rotary movement of the blank to conform to skimmed cut faces will be described with reference to schematic figure 25. In this figure , tt # t # can be considered as fragmentary sectional views of a cutter C having split faces, these sections being taken along the radii? ' ? '' and? '". respectively, as in fig. 17.
Instead of the commonly used template 26, a special 26W template has been provided. This jig 26w, instead of being provided with a vertical guide surface, is provided with a surface of revolution built on the center S and having an axial plane whatever the profile desired. The surface of revolution is such that its various radii are the same as the corresponding radii of the cutter C to be cut. The 96V jig has an inclined surface 26t which is placed at the same angle as the skimmed tooth faces of the cutter C.
A specially shaped key 27 @ cooperates with the 26 "'template.
In any horizontal plane, key 27 "has the same cross-sectional shape as tool 25, but the key is bent backwards at points above the center.
S of the template.
Fig. 25 shows the way in which the shape of the jig of FIG. 26. Under the control of the jig 26w and the 2 / key, the cutting tool 25 is kept at a distance;
-from the center of the cutter C. when the vertical part of the key 27 "is at a distance y-from the tit such that r ', if no special arrangements are made, the tool 25 will be in position at the distance r 'from the roughing .-- The tool will immediately begin its inward relief movement even though the roughing tooth has not yet reached it, and it will and) result in the cutting of a die line - inaccurate pouch, as has been explicitly described with reference to Fig. 17.
When using the construction shown in figs. 20 and 21, this error is avoided by delaying the movement of the tool. According to the different procedure which will be described, the clearance movement of the tool is not changed with respect to time, but is changed with respect to position, i.e. the tool 25 instead of being able to take a position away from the center, is forced to take a position at a radius which is greater by the distance s'.
The distance is such that the relief movement of 1 tool inwards, which begins immediately: allows the tool to properly engage the tooth section and cut exactly the desired relief there. Tool 25 is maintained at increased radius '+ s', owing to the peculiar curved shape of the top of key 278. The key attacks the edge of the jig at a point along the inclined surface 26t, the point of attack being at a higher elevation because of the tilt. The curvature is such that the vertical part of the key is kept at a distance s from the center S of the template.
Likewise for the radius? '"The tool 25, instead of being able to take a position at the radius e" from the center, is obliged to take a position at a radius which is greater than the distance s ". The distance s" is such that the inward draft movement of the tool, which begins immediately, allows the tool to engage the section of tooth t "and pick up the exact draft desired therein.
The increased radius r "-s" s obtains due to the aforesaid curvature of the part another point along the surface 2tint, this point being closer to the center and consequently at an even greater elevation.
It can be seen that two independent variations are effected in the relation between the draft movements of the tool and the rotary movement of the blank. One of these variations depends on the longitudinal movements of the tool along the blank, and the other variation depends on the movement of the tool inward or outward, so that the blank is cut with different diameters. The first variation is done by changing the rotary movement of the blank, and the second variation by changing the draft movements of the tool.
To actuate the carriage longitudinally along the bench, a screw 107 is provided which attacks a nut 108 carried by a console 109 suspended from the carriage. The screw is carried at its left side end in a bearing 110 (FIG. 2) formed in a console 111 fixed to the bench. On the console 111 there is a transverse shaft 112 which is connected to the screw 107 by means of a bevel gear 113. At the front end of the shaft 113 there is a flywheel 114 which allows the screw to be rotated at the bottom. hand to operate the carriage. So that the carriage can be operated automatically to advance the tool from one cutting position to another, or provided a suitable mechanism.
This mechanism is adapted to advance the carriage intermittently, but it should be noted that the carriage could also be operated continuously if desired. On the console 111 is mounted a cross bearing pin 115 on which rotates a sleeve 11 (; (Fig. 11). A toothed wheel 117 which meshes with a toothed wheel 118 of the shaft 112 is mounted in free play on the sleeve. near its internal end, to this toothed wheel 117 is connected a roll trocllet 119.
From the teeth 120 provided on the sleeve 11C near the sleeve 116 is keyed a ratchet wheel 122 similar to the ratchet wheel 119. A swing arm 123 is mounted in free play on the hub of the ratchet wheel 122. A connecting rod 124 is connected. pivot to this arm near its lower end, and the left side end of this connecting rod is connected in an adjustable manner to an oscillating crank 125.
The crank is fixed to a transverse oscillating shaft 126 which is mounted in a bearing 127 and carries at its rear end a lever 128. The lever carries at its upper end a roller 129 placed so as to be engaged by a cam 130 of a longitudinal rotary shaft 131. On the oscillating arm 123 is mounted a transverse pin 132 carrying two pawls 133 and 134 arranged respectively to engage the ratchet wheels 119 and 122. Either pawl can be engaged with the corresponding wheel and be free from it. The shaft 131 rotates in the manner which will be described presently, and it can be seen that with each rotation of this shaft, the arm 128 and the crank 125 oscillate.
The oscillation of the crank 125 is transmitted by means of the connecting rod 124 to the arm 123, the oscillation amplitude of the plate being adjustable by changing the connection between the connecting rod and the crank; by means of either pawl 133 or IZ-j4, one of the ratchet wheels 119 or 122 rotates at a small angle; so as to rotate the shaft 112 and the screw 107 and to actuate the carriage. It can be seen that the movement of the carriage is relatively large when pawl 133 is used, and relatively small when using pawl 134. By choosing the proper pawl and adjusting the crank connection, the amount of movement can be obtained. desired of the cart.
The rotation of the spindle and the blank is stopped during the tool advance movement. For this purpose, two mechanisms acting alternately are provided, one which serves to rotate the spindle and the blank during one revolution, or approximately one to effect the longitudinal advance of the tool and also serves to effect other movements that will be described.
The mechanism for rotating the spindle and the blank has already been partially described; this mechanism comprises the transverse shaft 11, the worm 10 and the helical wheel 9; the machine is provided with a main motor shaft 135 adapted to be actuated in any suitable manner, for example by means of a belt mounted on a pulley 136. On the shaft 135 turns a toothed wheel 137 (fig. 4) which can be coupled to the shaft by means of a keyed coupling element 138. The wheel 137 meshes with a wheel 139 provided on a longitudi- nal shaft 140.
On the shaft 140 is fixed a long toothed wheel 141 which is surrounded by a sleeve 142 open on its upper front side. A bush 143 slides and rotates on the sleeve 142, and is provided with lugs between which a toothed wheel 144 is set and rotates. This toothed wheel meshes with said toothed wheel 141 of shaft 140.
A third longitudinal shaft 145 has been provided carrying a series of toothed wheels 146 of different diameters. The shaft 145 is connected to said shaft 11 by means of a gear 147.
Bushing 143 can be angularly and longitudinally displaced on sleeve 142 so as to bring toothed wheel 144 into engagement with any one of toothed wheels 146 of different diameters. A spring plunger 148 carried by the sleeve 143 is adapted to penetrate any of a series of openings in the sleeve 142, so as to hold the wheel 144 in exact position to mesh with any of the wheels 146. It will be seen that with this construction the shaft 145 as well as the shaft 11 can be operated from the shaft 135 at any of a series of speeds.
A small longitudinal shaft 149 is mounted in alignment with the main motor shaft 135. Shaft 149 carries a coupling member which is adapted to be coupled by coupling and is in its upright position as shown in FIG. 4, it actuates toothed wheel 137 and the various parts connected to this wheel. When the coupling member is in its left position, it actuates the shaft 149. A cross shaft 150 is suitably mounted in bearings of the bed, and this shaft is connected to the shaft 149 by means of an angle gear 151.
The shaft 150 carries a worm 152 which meshes with a helical wheel 153 provided on the longitudinal shaft 131.
In machine operation, it is desirable that the sleeve 79 and the shaft 131 each make one full turn alternately and in order of succession. To obtain alternating movements of the sleeve and the shaft, an automatic mechanism has been provided for moving the coupling element 138. This element 138 is provided with an annular groove in which the rollers or projections fit. provided on a fork lever 154 (fig. 6). This lever is pivoted transversely on the frame, and is provided with a roller 155 which allows it to be moved.
A transverse oscillating shaft 156 is mounted in the frame above the fork lever 154. This oscillating shaft carries at its rear end an arm 157 in which is mounted a spring plunger 158. This plunger is V-shaped at its end. lower and is adapted to engage the roller 155. A lever 159 with upper and lower branches is fixed on the oscillating shaft 156 at the front end of this shaft.
The upper branch carries a roller 160 which is adapted to be engaged by a cam plate 161 attached to a drum 162 mounted on the sleeve 79. The lower branch of the lever 159 carries a roller 163 which is adapted to be engaged by a plate. cam 164 fixed to a drum 165 mounted on the shaft 131. When the parts are in the positions shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 6, the sleeve 79 is moved and continues to rotate until the cam plate 161 engages the roller 160 in the opposite direction according to FIG. 4.
This movement forces the spring plunger 158 onto the top of the roller 155, and thus tends to oscillate the lever 54 in a direction to bring the coupling member into the actuating position of the shaft 149. When the shaft 149 is thus actuated, the shaft 131 is actuated with the cam drum 165 which it carries in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 6. This movement continues until the cam plate 164 engages the roller 163 and oscillates the lever 169 in the direction counterclockwise as shown in FIG. 3. In other words, the cam plate 164 serves to return the lever to the position shown in the drawing.
The spring plunger 158 is again forced onto the top of the roller 155 and tends to operate the lever 154 in a direction to place the coupling member 138 in the actuating position of the sprocket 137.
It is preferable not to depend solely on the displacement of the lever 159 for adjusting the movements of the coupling member 138. As shown (Fig. 4) the lever 154 is provided with opposed fingers 166 and 167 which are suitable. to be engaged respectively by latches 168 and 169. These latches are held in engagement with the fingers by means of a spring 170. Referring to FIG. 4, it is seen that the latch 168 serves to prevent movement of the lever 154 to the left even after the arm 157 has been brought to its right position.
Likewise, latch 169 serves to prevent movement of lever 154 to the right, even after arm 157 has been moved to its left position. To disconnect the latch 168, a vertically movable bar 171 is provided, which is normally pressed upward by a spring 172.
The upper end of the bar is engaged by an arm 173 of a small transverse oscillating shaft 174. This oscillating shaft carries at its front end a lever 175 cam 176 Sxée à la. helical wheel 9. The cam projection 176 has relative to the cam plate 161 such a position that the plate engages first. roller 160 and moves arm 157 into position to move lever 154. When spindle 79 has completed the required turn, cam protrusion 176 engages lever roller 175, so as to rotate the swing shaft and lever. 173 and actuate the bar 171 to release the lock 168.
With the latch released, the lever 154 rotates under the action of the spring plunger 158 and disengages the coupling element from the wheel 137 and engages it with the shaft 149. The latch 1 is mounted on a small oscillating shaft. transverse 177 which carries at its end avaut a lever 178 (fig. 6). At the upper end of the lever 178 is a roller positioned so as to be engaged by a cam projection 179 of the drum 165. The cam projection 179 has with respect to the main cam plate 164 a position such that the drive plate is engaged. first the roller 163 and brings the arm 158 into position to move the lever 154.
When the shaft 131 has completed the required revolution, the cam projection 179 engages the roller and the lever 178, so as to rotate the oscillating shaft 177 to release the latch loti9. With the lock released, the lever 154 rotates under the action of the spring plunger 158, disengages the coupling element from the shaft 149 and engages it with the toothed wheel 137. It can be seen that by means of the mechanism described, spindle 79 stops on its own after having ex # cut # a full turn and starting shaft 131.
Likewise, shaft 131 after having executed a full revolution: stops by itself and starts spindle 79.
I) In this way, the two parties operate alternately in order of continuous succession.
It is desirable to advance the tool longitudinally while it is out of engagement with the blank, i.e. when the tool is in front of the groove between two teeth of the blank. As a result, the throat blank. The throats. are helical, but the spindle and the blank rotate an additional amount with each longitudinal movement, and this additional rotation exactly compensates for the inclination of the grooves and secures the stop of the blank with a groove being in taee of the 'tool.
The tool is withdrawn at the time of each longitudinal movement and the key is also moved away from the jig. This withdrawal is effected by means of a mechanism actuated by the shaft 131, the withdrawal thus being precisely regulated with respect to the forward movement.
The slide 54 (fig. 8) is associated with a stop 180 which is engaged by the upper end of a lever 181 pivot # longitudinally on the carriage 21. The lower end of the lever is pivotally connected to a roller which is adapted to be attacked by a cam plate 182 of a plate 183 controlled by the shaft 131.
At the start of rotation of the shaft 131, the cam plate 182 engages the roller on the lever 181 and causes the latter to oscillate in a clockwise direction, thereby actuating the stop 180 forwards with the slide 24. In this way, the tool 25 is withdrawn from the blank, and the key 27 is withdrawn from the jig 26.
Following the rotation of the shaft 131, the cam 130 actuates the advancement mechanism in the manner already described, and the carriage is moved longitudinally along the bed. After this move; the cam plate 182 allows the lever 181 to return to the position shown and the slider 24 can move backward carrying the tool 25 and the key 27 to their operative positions.
It can be seen that by thus removing the key from the template, during the longitudinal movement, all the difficulties inherent in moving the key along the template while it is in contact with it are avoided. If the key was constantly kept in contact with the template. it would be difficult to perform the longitudinal movement, especially at
The key is brought back into engagement with the jig by a relatively slow movement with minimal pressure, so that there is no tendency to bend or twist the key, or to cause uneven contact between the key and the key. template.
For this purpose, a mechanism has been provided for bringing the carriage, the operation of which is entirely independent of the mechanism used to remove it. The aforesaid stop 180 is not directly connected to the slide 24, but is connected to a second slide 184 which is transversely movable and independently of the first slide 24. Springs 185 are interposed between the slide 184 and the carriage 21 and these springs tend to move the slide 184 backwards, thus keeping the stop 180 in constant mesh with the lever 181.
The two slides 24 and 184 are usually connected by a lock. As shown distinctly in FIGS. 3, 8 and 9, the latch comprises a plate 186 housed in a recess in the top of the slider 24. The plate is provided with a boss which extends downwardly through a groove of the slider and a vertical pin 187 is screwed on. in this boss. This stud crosses with narrow clearance an opening of the slider 184. On the slider 184 are pivotally mounted two small return levers 198 provided with horizontal upper branches which attack a collar of the stud 187. The lower ends of the levers are adapted to be attacked by a conical cam bush 189 vertically movable on the stud.
When socket 189 is in its lower position, as shown, levers 188 are forced outward, thereby pulling stud 187 down and forcing plate 186 into clamping engagement with slider 24. Hence In this way, the slider 24 is rigidly connected to the slider 184. When the socket 189 is in its raised position, the levers 188 swing inwardly; they thus allow the pin 187 to move upwards and to clamp with the slide 24. To actuate the sleeve 189, a fork lever 190 (fig. 3) is provided with protrusions attacking the grooves or notches of the sleeve. .
This lever is fixed to a longi tudinal oscillating shaft 191 mounted in the bearings of the cha riot 21. To the lever 190 is connected a lever 192 provided with a roller which is adapted to be attacked by cam plates 193 and 194 fixed to a disc 195 mounted on shaft 131.
It can be seen that when the shaft 131 rotates, the cam plate 193 attacks the roller of the lever 192, so as to actuate the lever 190; and the cam sleeve 189 upwards and release the latch. The roller is then engaged by the cam plate 194, so as to actuate the cam sleeve 189 downwards and re-engage the latch.
It has already been indicated that an additional mechanism is provided to brake the slider after it has been removed in the manner described above. In order that this additional return mechanism can operate without being affected in any way by the return movement of the slider 184, and in addition to the slider 24 being able to return with a minimum of effort, an additional device has been provided. to carry the slider 24 after it has been unlocked from the slider 184.
As shown, the carriage 21 is provided near the front and the rear with transverse pivots 196 and 197 (fig. 7). The carriage is grooved near the pivots and in these grooves are placed arms 198 and 199 pivoting on these pivots. The arms are provided with rollers 200 and 201 which are adapted to engage the bottom of the slider 24. The arms are connected by pivoted connecting rods 202 and these connecting rods are in turn connected by a transverse bar 203. The bar 203 is provided with. grooves or notches in which the pivot bosses 204 protruding from the lever 190 fit.
The result is that when the lever 190 swings upward to release the latch, the arms 198 and 199 also swing so that the rollers 200 and 201 swing upward to and carry it independently. The effective lifting or spacing of the slide may be a few hundredths of a millimeter.
To bring the slide 24 back as soon as it has been released from the latch and lifted by rollers, helical springs 205 are provided. These springs are established in long transverse cylindrical openings 206 of the slide 24. The springs abut a their rear ends against 207 X buffers screwed into the openings and at their front entrances against heads 208 provided on transverse bars 209.
The bars 209 pass through central openings in the buffers 207 and are connected at their rear ends to the brackets 210 of the carriage 21.
The heads 208 are in the form of pistons and the front parts of the openings 206 constitute cylinders 211 in which the pistons 208 fit and move.
On the slide 24 is attached a cast iron 212 having a transverse passage 213 which communicates at its ends with the cylinders 211. The cast iron piece 212 also includes a fluid reservoir 214.
A small opening 215 (Fig. 10) controlled by an adjustable needle 216 leads from passage 213 into reservoir 214. A valve. The automatic retainer 217 runs from tank 214 back to passage 213. Cylinders 211 as well as passage 213 and part of tank 214 are filled with a suitable liquid, which is preferably a liquid such as ilmile. . We see that as soon as the slide? 1 has been lifted and separated from the slider 184, the springs 205 tend to move it back.
But this tendency is countered by the engagement of the pistons 208 with the liquid in the cylinders. This and engagement forces liquid from the cylinders into passage 213 and from the bed into reservoir 214 through the constricted opening 215.
I, Hquid can only pass relatively slowly through this opening, and in this way the return movement of the knife is done very slowly. When the slider comes forward sharply as it was opened to allow liquid to flow from reservoir 214 back to passage 213 and cylinders 211. The slow return movement causes the key to gently attack the jig. and with a minimum of force so that there is little or no tendency to bend or flex the parts.
It should be noted that the various cams 130, 182, 193 and 194 are placed relative to each other so that the operations which they respectively control take place in the following order: First the two eolIIisseaux 184 and 24 are pulled back in unison. these two slides still being locked to one another. Then the slider 24 is unlocked from the slider 184 and at the same time is lifted on the rollers 200 and 201. At or about this time, the carriage is actuated longitudinally to bring the tool to a new cutting position.
The slider 184 can then return to its normal position. At the same time, the slider can move slowly backwards under the control of the springs 205 and the a-Suide regulating mechanism. After completing the return movement of slide 24, rollers 200 and 201 are lowered and slider neck '¯'-1 is again locked to slide 184.
So that the slider 24 can be released by hand from the slider 184. a lever 218 is provided which is Hxp to the oscillating shaft 191. To actuate the lever, a key # 218a is provided as well as represents # # fig. 9. It can be seen that the operator, by actuating the lever 218, can turn the oscillating shaft so as to lift the cam sleeve 189 and to release the lock. To advance the slider 24 by hand, a toothed segment 219 (Fig. 7) is provided which is pivotally mounted on the carriage and meshes with a rack 220 fixed to the slider.
A hand lever 221 is connected to the toothed segment 2t! h It can be seen that by lowering or raising the lever, the slide 24 can be operated
The general operation of the machine is evident from the foregoing description and some very brief explanations will be helpful.
A jig 26 is established having the desired profile, and having, in the case of a ginned cutter, the desired ratio with the radius of the cutter, as already described. A blank is put in place, this blank having already been grooved and roughed in any usual or preferred manner. Gear 78 is adjusted according to the degree of inclination of the helical teeth of the blank, and gear 56, 57 is adjusted according to the number of teeth of the blank. By means of handwheels 40 and 114, the tool is adjusted transversely and longitudinally in engagement with the blank at the right end thereof.
Then the machine is started. the spindle 79 and the control shaft 131 operating alternately in succession.
During the rotary movement of the blank, the draft movements of the tool take place in the manner which has been described, so as to cut the desired draft on the teeth of the blank. After a complete revolution of the blank, the rotary movement of the spindle is stopped, as well as the relief movements of the tool. The carriage is then advanced longitudinally to the left, the blank rotating slightly in accordance with the helical teeth. Just before the longitudinal movement, the tool slide is withdrawn so as to move the tool away from the blank and the key from the template.
After the longitudinal movement, the tool slide is slowly operated in the opposite direction, so as to gently return the spindle to the jig which is being driven at a new position.
The tool assumes a corresponding position with respect to the blank. After this movement of the tool and the key, the blank is again actuated by one turn, and these movements are repeated in the same order until the blank is completely formed. In the case of a toothed cutter, the clearance movements of gements of diameter, as already described, to follow the screening.
It frequently happens that a jig such as 26 is not available and that instead of such a jig the operator is provided with a jig 26 "(6g. 28) having an inverted shape. which is the shape of the part to be worked by the cutter which is to be manufactured. To use a jig such as 26 ", a somewhat modified machine has been provided, as shown in fig. 27 and 28.
This machine is the same as that already described except for differences in the carriage and the transverse slides as well as in the associated parts mentioned. For simplicity, we represent in fig. 27 and 28, a milling cutter A 'having straight teeth instead of helical teeth, but it is obvious that this does not matter for the construction variant which will be described.
Instead of the slider 24, the modified machine has a slider 94a which is provided with a bracket 222 adapted to hold a key 27 "so that it can engage the rear edge of the jig 26". When the cutting tool 25 is symmetrical as shown, the key 27n is also symmetrical and has the same shape as the tool.
Instead of the lever 181, there is provided a lever 181 ", the upper end of which is placed opposite a stop 180n which it attacks. On the shaft 131 is mounted a large plate 1838 which is provided with a plate -came 182 ". The cam plate 182 "serves to oscillate the lever 181" so as to actuate the slider 184 and the slider 24 "back instead of actuating them forward.
This backward movement is possible because the cutting tool 25 always faces a groove in the nozzle when the tool is moved. The locking mechanism between the two sliders 184 and 24 "is the same as already described, as also the roller mechanism for lifting the slider 24" out of engagement with the slider 184.
This locking mechanism is put out of the sliders have been actuated forward and the slider 24a is lifted on the rollers. To bring the slider 24a back to its operating position, we can see a mechanism similar to that already described for the slider 24. But we have shown in the drawing a somewhat simpler mechanism which can lend itself to many categories of operation. works. Coil springs 205 have been shown which are established in transverse openings 206 "of the slider 24a.
These springs abut at their rear ends against the consoles 210 of the carriage 21, and at their front ends against buffers 223 fitted in the openings.
It has already been said that it is not essential for the cutting tool to be a non-rotating tool. Fig. 29 shows a mechanism comprising a rotary cutter and which can replace the tool holder 42 and the tool 25.
As shown, a console 224 can be engaged by buttons 43 and thus be nxed to the slider 38. A spindle 225, on which is mounted a cutter 226, is established and rotates in bearings of the console 224. As shown, the console 224 also carries a rotating spindle 227 which is connected to the spindle 225 by means of a spur gear 228. The force is transmitted to the spindle 227 by means of a belt passing over a pulley 229. In combination with the cutter 216,
a key is provided having a shape which is the same or approximately the same as that of the strawberry.
