Compressed air brake. The object of the present invention is a compressed air brake, of which the appended drawing gives, by way of example, one embodiment.
Fig. 1 represents the brake cylinder, comprising 2 chambers C1 and C2, separated by the piston P, which acts on the linkage and through it on the brake shoes.
The brake control member A is linked on the one hand to the chamber C1 by the channel Co and, on the other hand, by B, with the main compressed air line E coming from the locomotive. The chamber C2 communicates with the valve So by the channel c3 formed in the pa king of the cylinder.
The control unit, of which FIG. 2, gives a detailed section consists of a small double piston p, p2 actuating a valve S ,; one of the faces, p2, of this piston is subjected to the pressure of the air from the cylinder; the other face of the piston, p ,, is subjected to the pressure of the main pipe E along the train. When there is a sufficient dif ference of these pressures, the piston p1 p2 moves from left to right or from right to left depending on whether the force is greater on one or the other of its faces, as it is explained below.
The operation of the brake is as follows: 1 Filling: The air coming from the main pipe E enters the two chambers C1 C2; in C, first, by the pipe B ,, the channels c1 c2 c'2 and c0 (the ball b being raised by the pressure) then in C2 by c1 c2, the valve S0 which is raised and c5. The pressure is thus the same on the two faces of the piston P, that is to say in the two chambers CI and C2, to within 1/4 atmosphere, by the fact of the red spring placed on the So valve, which is adjusted accordingly.
2 Braking When the locomotive engineer wants to produce a service clamping, he opens the main line valve on the locomotive; the drop in pressure which results from this operation, in the main pipe, repeats itself in B, and, consequently, in C3 by c ,, determining the displacement of p, p2 which is pushed by the pressure existing in the chamber of the brake cylinder communicating with the left face of this piston. This movement is all the better ensured when the ball b obstructs the channel c2.
The piston p1 p2 by moving drives the valve S1 and thus allows by c3 c4 the evacuation into the atmosphere of part of the air in the right chamber of the brake cylinder, thereby ensuring the clamping. At the start of the movement of p1 p2, C3 communicates with B1 by cl, channel a is closed; after a small displacement of p1 p2 to the right, a is discovered before c1:; e closes, then the continuing movement c1 closes until the moment when the piston p1 p2 coming to the end of its stroke, c1 is of new or -vert, at the same time as a.
During this displacement of p1 p2 we therefore had an instant, very short it is true, but sufficient, during which channels a and C1 were open so multaneously, which allowed a small volume of air to the main duct not to be in the open air; it is only at the end of the stroke of the piston p1 p2 that this communication is ensured in a more durable way, for the evacuation of the air of the main pipe in the open air, which occurs in particularly in an emergency, under the action of the mechanic who has opened his brake key valve fully and quickly, or in the event of an accident such as a broken coupling or operation of the alarm valve.
On the other hand, the valve Si is constructed in such a way that the section which it offers to the wise passage of the air increases; as small as it is, when the valve displacement itself is reduced, it becomes larger as the valve moves further away from its seat.
In this way, a moderate tightening is obtained when the pressure in the pipe is low and a much more rapid and forceful tightening when the vacuum itself is more sensitive.
3 Release: To release the brakes, the locomotive engineer puts the main pipe D by means of his brake valve in communication with the main tank of the locomotive; the pressurized air arrives at B1 B2, pushes back the piston p1 p2 which covers the opening of the channel a, at the same time as it discovers the opening of the channels c1 c2, the air thus arrives at C, through b1, c1 C c0, determining the delivery from right to left of the piston P at full stroke and, consequently, the release of the brakes. The shutter valve S0 held by the spring r0 prevents the access of compressed air into chamber C2 as long as the pressure in the latter is maintained at an atmosphere below the normal pressure of C1.
The brake cylinder of each vehicle can be isolated from the main line by means of valve I.
