Une forme d'exécution de l'objet de l'in vention est représentée, à titre d'exemple, au dessin annexé, dans lequel: La fig. 1 est une vue d'ensemble d'une locomotive, de son 'tender et d'un wagon faisant voir l'adaptation d'ensemble; Les fig. 2 et 3 donnent. de front et en dessus la vue de la cabine du mécanicien avec l'agencement des tubulures et des- robi- nets du- frein intégral; La fig. 4 représente une valve spéciale double de distribution sur la machine;

La fig.8 est la vue, parallèlement à l'essieu, (le cc super-frein; La fit;. 9 représente une variante dit super- frein, vue suivant l'axe de l'essieu, et com portant le dispositif permettant d'augmenter encore le degré de freinage suivant le poids du wagon; La fig. 10 est une coupe longitudinale du dispositif d'un sélecteur permettant l'action successive ou simultanée des pressions infé rieures et supérieures à une atmosphère;
Lorsqu'on provoque le serrage, et que, par conséquent, ' on diminue la pression dans la conduite générale, le diaphragme 28 de la chambre supérieure 19 s'abaisse et avec lui l'équipage 27 des valves 22 et 24 qui passe d'abord par une position intermédiaire où la valve 22, donnant accès par 23 à la triple valve et la valve 24 donnant accès au cylindre à vide, sont ouvertes toutes les deux, c'est-à-dire qu'en même temps: a) L'air comprimé détendu à 2 kg par exemple va par 23 agir sur la triple valve pour mettre le réservoir auxi liaire 7 en communication par 38-4-39 avec la chambre 5 du cylindre à air com primé; et le piston 15 actionne alors les sabots de frein par la timonerie 6;
Pneumatic brake installation for trains. The present invention relates to a pneumatic brake installation for trains comprising the usual automatic brake working at medium pressures, and at least a second, direct brake, working at pressures different from the aforesaid average pressures, the two automatic brakes and direct having a common main pipe.
In the installation according to the invention, the dimensions of the direct brake piston are such that this brake can, when it acts alone, act with the same power as the normal brake.
Thanks to this arrangement it is possible to obtain a brake which meets all the requirements of automaticity, moderation, progressive tightening and loosening, proportionality of tightening to the load of the wagon, i.e. once and for all, or automatically, depending on the case.
The brake can also include a core that can be qualified as a normal brake, and which is none other than a usual automatic compressed air brake and two direct brakes including an infra-brake operating at a low pressure tending to 0 kg. and a super brake requiring a pressure of the order of magnitude of 7 to 10 kg, higher than the strongest generally used in air brakes. compressed, for example the Westinghouse brake.
One embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is an overall view of a locomotive, its tender and a wagon showing the overall adaptation; Figs. 2 and 3 give. from the front and from above the view of the mechanic's cabin with the arrangement of the pipes and valves of the integral brake; Fig. 4 shows a special double dispensing valve on the machine;
Fig. 5 shows a front view, suspended from the frame of the wagon, the engine system constituting the infra-brake and the normal brake actuating the linkage; Fig. 6 shows this same larger scale engine system living above, with its piping and connections; Fig. 7 shows the arrangement of the super-brake fixed to the wagon frame above the axle (seen along the axis of the axle);
Fig. 8 is the view, parallel to the axle, (the cc super-brake; La fit ;. 9 represents a variant called super-brake, seen along the axis of the axle, and comprising the device allowing to further increase the degree of braking according to the weight of the wagon: Fig. 10 is a longitudinal section of the device of a selector allowing the successive or simultaneous action of pressures lower and higher than one atmosphere;
Fig. 11 is a cross section of said selector in line with the pipe of the general pipe; Fig. 12 is the cross section of a transposition valve making it possible to attack the super-brake when a pressure greater than that required for the normal brake is sent into the general duct.
The normal brake is constituted by a compressed air brake of the Westinghouse type comprising, from one end of the train to the other, its main pipe 1 in relation to a cylinder of compressed air, called medium pressure 2, supplied, on the machine, by an air pump 3, and under each vehicle, a triple valve 4, a brake cylinder 5 acting on the linkage 6, and an auxiliary tank 7 (fig. 5 and 6).
t1 this normal brake are added: on the one hand, an infra-brake 8 so called because it uses pressures lower than the atmospheric pressure, and, on the other hand, titi super-brake 9 (fig. 7 and 8) so called because it uses higher pressures than those used for ordinary compressed air brakes.
Use small for the clarity of the presentation, temporarily leave aside this snper-brake, assuming the transposition valve 10 (6g. 6) inactive, and isolating it moreover by the net stop valve 11, which is interspersed on its. to switch it off, if necessary.
The normal brake is combined with; the infra-brake by the selector 12 (fig. 6) and the latter brake 8 is itself constituted by mid vacuum cylinder whose piston 13 is mounted in tan dem on the same rod 14 as the piston 15 of the air cylinder compressed 5, the two udders thus being integral, and the attack Fi of the wheelhouse of the brake shoes being unique for both.
On the main pipe 1 is connected the transposition valve 10, which, in the normal state - the super-brake not being actuated (fig. 1 \ 3) - gives by 16 the communication with the selector 12 (fig. 6), which can be cry further put in corrrirrtiti ication with the cylinder with compressed air brake by a con duite 17 which can be isolated by titi stop valve 18 three-way.
In the selector (fig. 10) are three chambers, upper bare 19 and one lower 20, all of them with movable diaphragm with antagonistic spring and a partitioned central chamber 21 comprising two valves, one, 22, capable of connecting by communication 16 the general pipe with that 2 3 of the triple valve 4 of the normal compressed air brake, and the other.
24, to connect by the same communication 16 the general pipe with the chamber 25 or open the pipe 26 going to the cylinder of the vacuum brake of the infra-brake.
The two valves 22 and 24 of the central chamber of the selector 12 are wedged on the same rod 27, the whole crew being attached to diaphragm art 28 (the the upper chamber 19 and coming only opposite the dia phrase 29 of the lower chamber 20.
In the chamber 25 is a united check valve 3 (I which is kept normally open by a counter spring 31, and beyond which is the nozzle of the pipe 26 going to the vacuum cylinder 8.
In the nozzle 26 opens, from the urn on the one hand, an exhaust box with a spherical valve 32 which prevents: any permanent pressure greater than the hatritosphere in the vacuum cylinder, and, on the other hand, a pipe 33 which exits the plug in the chamber 21 below an exhaust to the open air 34. A duct 35, which can communicate the chambers 26 and 21, normally exhausts, by a thin thread, the chamber 25. These three ducts 33 , 34 and 35 are located vis-à-vis a slide 36 which is moved by the valve 24, or, which amounts to the same thing, by means of a return wedged on the rod 27 of the central assembly of the selector.
It is assumed that the normal compressed air brake is armed in working order and that the three-way valve 18 is closed intercepting the part of the pipe 17 on the side of the triple valve 4 and, on the contrary, exhausting the part. of this pipe which arrives through 17 in the chamber 20 under the diaphragm 29.
The pressure sent by the mechanic's valve 37 (fig. 22) in the general pipe 1 is about 4 kg. This pressure fills the inlet chamber 21 of the selector 12, the upper diaphragm 28 compresses its return spring, the crew 27 is lifted, and with it the two valves 22 and 24 which are fixed therein, that is to- say that the air from the general duct goes through 23 to the triple valve 4 and to the auxiliary reservoir 7 of the normal brake; everything happens as if nothing has changed to the usual brake. The lower valve 24 hermetically closes the communication with 25 to the vacuum cylinder.
When the clamping is caused, and therefore the pressure in the general pipe is reduced, the diaphragm 28 of the upper chamber 19 is lowered and with it the assembly 27 of the valves 22 and 24 which passes from first by an intermediate position where the valve 22, giving access through 23 to the triple valve and the valve 24 giving access to the vacuum cylinder, are both open, that is to say that at the same time: a) The compressed air relaxed to 2 kg for example will act on the triple valve by 23 to put the auxiliary reservoir 7 in communication via 38-4-39 with the chamber 5 of the compressed air cylinder; and the piston 15 then actuates the brake shoes via the linkage 6;
b) part of this air at 2 kg enters through 24 the chamber 25 preceding the vacuum cylinder where it immediately pushes the valve 30 on its seat then intercepting the communication with 26.
This phenomenon has the advantage of avoiding abrupt application of the brake, but above all it has the effect of causing a sudden drop in pressure in the general pipe, precipitating the action of the triple valve of the following vehicle, and and so on, from vehicle to vehicle, the action on the last vehicle thus being obtained in a much shorter time than in known systems.
The central gear 27 of the selector continuing to descend, the valve 22 is applied to its seat and the communication 16 of the general pipe is completely eliminated with the triple valve by 23, the brake still remaining in action. The communication of the general pipe, on the contrary, continues to be established by 24 on the vacuum side until 25, where the pressure, always greater than 1 kg, stops at the valve 30 of the pipe 26 of the vacuum cylinder.
The back pressure air in the vacuum cylinder being exhausted through 33 and 34 and through the valve box 32 gradually flows into the atmosphere; the tightening of its brakes under the influence of the compressed air piston increases. During this time, the spool 36 is lowered to the lower end of its travel - by blocking the exhaust duct 34 by its upper edge = intercepting the duct 33 in its shell and, on the contrary, releasing the duct 35 which establishes a second communication. between 21 and 26.
It is then that the infra-brake can intervene to be superimposed on the normal brake. If, in fact, through the play of the mechanic's valve 40 (fig. 3), a vacuum is created in the general pipe by putting it in communication with a vacuum pump or an ejector 41 actuated by a servomotor 42, the vacuum is made in the chamber 21 of the selector 12 of each vehicle, then through 24 to the chamber 25 and the valve 30 being drawn in, the vacuum reaches the vacuum cylinder 8 of the vehicle through 26 (the ball valve 32 is attracted to its seat blocking the exhaust), the piston 13 of the brake cylinder is attracted due to the vacuum which occurs in this cylinder 8,
which considerably increases the traction on the rod 14 of the linkage and, consequently, the pressure on the brake shoes. If even the cross section of the vacuum cylinder is much larger than that of the compressed air cylinder, this pressure can increase by a factor of two.
As it is not always desirable to increase the braking of certain wagons, in particular those having a low tare weight and which are empty, the hard double braking action can be prevented and this is precisely the object of the pipe 17 which connects the lower chamber 20, with diaphragm 29, of the selector 12, by 17, with the output of the triple valve, which goes air cylinder with brake, that is to say at a point where the pressure is precisely that of the normal brake cylinder with compressed air and where there is precisely positive pressure if the normal brake works, and, on the contrary, atmospheric pressure, if this brake does not work and is exhausted.
If the tap 18 on this line 17 establishes the continuity of the line, as soon as the normal brake operates, the pressure going through the triple valve to the intermediate reservoir 7 to the compressed air brake cylinder 5 will also go into the lower chamber 20 to diaphragm 29 said selector 12, the diaphragm 29 will rise and form a stop on the rod 27 of the crew actuating the valves 22 and 24 and will prevent it from descending, leaving the normal compressed air brake alone in operation without the addition of the vacuum brake or infra-brake which will not come into action, even if the brake pipe is in depression.
If, on the contrary, for some reason, leak or otherwise, the normal brake does not work, there will be no pressure in the lower chamber 20 of the selector, the operation of the infra-brake by vacuum. will not be prevented, and there will be braking. In any case, there will be double braking, if we want to prevent it.
If, on the contrary, as it was admitted: firing at the start, the stopcock 18 is turned on the pipe 17 so as to eliminate all communication, the two brakes, normal brake and infra-brake, can still operate simultaneously.
Consequently, for light wagons running empty, it will suffice to turn the valve 18 to the out position, it gives the continuity6 of the pipe, in order to avoid having too much braking: while on the contrary , for a loaded wagon, out will turn this stop cock so as to obstruct the pipe, so that the two brakes, normal brake and iirfra-brake, can operate simultaneously.
To release, the mechanic closes his valve 40 of the stained, and sends through the valve 38 called normal brake compressed air from the medium pressure tank 2 into the general pipe.
This air flows through 16 into the central chamber 21 of the selector 12 of each vehicle and finds the upper valve 22 closed and the lower valve 21 which is open; it therefore reaches the valve 30 or it stops; because he pushes her in her seat. At this time, the piston rod common to the compressed air cylinder and the vacuum cylinder still actuates the linkage.
But, on the other hand, the diaphragm 28 separating the chamber 1 from the chamber 19 rises, causing the crew 27 which fits the valve 24, on the contrary opening the valve 222, to allow the pressure of the general pipe, ale to activate the triple valve, fill the auxiliary tank with compressed air.
and to put the engine cylinder corresponding to the exhaust. The valve 24 is closed and with it the drawer 36 is reassembled which then puts in communication by 812, 34 with the atmosphere, the pipe 26 coming from the cylinder to vacuum 8. The air enters the vacuum cylinder 8 of the infra-freiii and the action on the common piston rod 14 actuating the linkage 6 ceases.
The double brake stops eoinpli @ teitieiit and there is and, progressiveness in this release. We are back to normal.
It should be noted that the vacuum infra-brake coii @ tituates a direct brake which is not likely to be exhausted during long slopes, since we can continuously feed it and govern it in power, at will. .
With regard to very steep slopes, the super brake, which is also moderate and inexhaustible, can be brought into play.
It consists for each vehicle of an air cylinder 43 (Fig. 7 to 9) placed above an axle 44, on which a pulley 45 of a certain diameter has been wedged. The piston 9 of the cylinder is terminated by a friction shoe 46 which is held in the air far enough from the pulley, by an opposing spring 47, but which can rest on it to form a brake, when the compressed air arriving in the cylinder 43 pushes it there.
The air arrives in the cylinder 43 by a transposition valve 10 (fig. 12), when the pressure sent by the mechanism in the general pipe, by a valve 48 separate from the normal valve 37 (fig. 2 and 3) exceeds substantially that (approximately 4 kg) corresponding to the operation of the normal brake, that is to say a pressure of 7 to 10 kg for example; such pressure, in fact, lifts the lower cylindrical spool 49 of the transposition valve closing the communication with the triple valve of the normal brake by 16 and on the contrary sending by 50 the high pressure air in the cylinder of the super brake that it put, in the state of rest, to the exhaust by 52, 51.
The compressed air, at high pressure, thus arrives at the cylinder 43 of the super-brake via a ball valve box 53 which allows air to enter the cylinder and not return it in the opposite direction. As a result, the cylinder could tend to raise the vehicle body somewhat; this is why the axle is surrounded by two guard calipers 54 each comprising another brake shoe 55 at their lower part, so as to act if this action were to occur, and in any case, to limit the amplitude of the shifting. This tendency to lift is not a drawback, but a most valuable advantage, since it has the effect of increasing the braking as a function of the weight, that is to say of the load condition of the wagon.
To give precisely the maximum effect to this result, one can wedge on the axle no longer a pulley, but an eccentric 56 (fig. 9), so that at each revolution of the wheel, the pressurized air contained. in the cylinder forming a mattress, is compressed by the movement of the axle itself, when the piston lifts under the action of the eccentric, and also takes, at times, at each revolution of the wheel, an overpressure which will be depending on the weight of the wagon body, slightly raised, and which will proportionally increase the braking.
As soon as you want to stop the action of the super-brake, it will suffice for the mechanic to bring back his control valve 48, the transposition valve 10 will operate, restoring communication with the selector for operation at normal brake pressure. ; and at the same time the super brake. will return to the exhaust via line 51 and port 52, which would not prevent, in order to save compressed air, from having an intermediate phase allowing the air from the super-brake to partially empty into the brake cylinder called normal brake; if he was exhausted. This is not shown in the drawing, and it is sufficient for that.
an intermediate light working during the stroke in the transposition valve. It should be noted that for the operation of all parts of this integral brake, there is on each. vehicle of the entire towed train that a single general pipe communicating with the engineer's cocks, or with a single cock - which, instead of giving only the various pressures relating to the normal automatic compressed air brake, would include two additional positions :
one communicating the general pipe with a vacuum pump or an ejector that a servomotor can start for the operation of the vacuum cylinder of the infra-brake, and the other, sending a higher pressure - , that of the normal brake for the action called super-freiu.
The three pipes on the machine (fig. 3): 57 of high pressure, 58 of medium pressure and 59 of pressure less than one atmosphere come out in the single pipe 1 extending over the entire train, through a double valve 60 , 61 distribution whose operation is self-explanatory and which can make a wide variety of arrangements.
The high pressure called super-brake is supplied by a second tank 62 with compressed air (at more than 7 hg) placed on the locomotive and distinct from that at the usual pressure (approximately 4 kg) which supplies the pipe for normal brake operation.
It is not essential, however, for the compression of the air in the high pressure cylinder, to have, strictly speaking, a separate pump from the one which produces the compressed air around 4 hg from the lower pressure cylinder. It suffices, in fact, to send the air from the pump into the cylinder of lower pressure only and to join the two cylinders by a titi pressure amplifier 63 (fig. 1).
This pressure amplifier is made up of two small-dimension compressed air cylinders arranged in tandem with the pistons on a common rod and whose sections are different. The first, larger, of these two cylinders receives the air called ordinary pressure reservoir (four atmospheres) and the second draws air from the atmosphere to push it back into the super-brake reservoir or high pressure reservoir. The pistons then move in tandem.
It will be understood that the infra-brake with all its components can be adapted to continuous brakes so as to build an assembly suitably protected by a casing.
Ultimately, the advantages of the considered brake are as follows: It makes it possible to increase braking to the point of even doubling it while having only one pipe along the train. It gives the necessary automaticity in the event of a broken coupling, but also includes two direct brakes making it possible to solve the problem of the descent on the long small ones and lending itself to sudden sudden stopping in the presence of an unforeseen obstacle suddenly appearing.
It ensures the progressive tightening and loosening.
It makes the action on the last vehicles of the train faster.
It makes it possible to voluntarily or automatically proportion the action of the brake on each vehicle art the same weight of the vehicle.
It goes without saying that the devices, infra-brake and super-brake, with their parts can be adopted separately one to the exclusion of the other for the improvement of the continuous brakes currently in use.
