Variable speed motion transmission mechanism. The object of the invention is a mechanism for transmitting movement at variable speed, applicable to self-propelled cars, airplanes, stationary machines of all kinds, etc., and enables one shaft to be actuated by another at different speeds. by means of a simple chain, while realizing for the mechanism of transmission of movement a low weight, minimal initial expenses, high efficiency and high construction solidity.
According to the invention, the wedge mechanism carries a driving wheel, expandable and contractile, associated with a wheel with impressions, driven, also expandable and 'contractile, these two wheels being placed facing each other. on two parallel shafts and arranged so as to be in engagement with an endless chain of predetermined and constant length, means for simultaneously producing the extension of one of said wheels and the contraction of the other and vice versa, means for allowing at least one tooth of said wheels to be temporarily displaced from its position.
drive, during the operation of extension or contraction and this while said tooth remains engaged with the chain, means for returning said tooth to a predetermined position after its release from the chain, means combined with said tooth for transmitting the force of the chain to the shaft of a wheel and vice versa and means for maintaining the two cavity wheels at predetermined defined diameters.
The accompanying drawing has been shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in front elevation partially cut away, a pair of impression wheels and a single chain, the elements being shown in the driving position; Fig. 2 is a similar view and shows the elements moved during a diameter change operation; Fig. 3 is a section through one of the wheels â, impressions, shown in FIG. 1, and FIG. 4 shows schematically the entire mechanism ... The rim of each cavity wheel a is divided into eight segments b all of which are provided with suitably shaped teeth c to be able to engage with the chain d.
The movement of each segment is limited so as to maintain its teeth c normal to the axis of the shaft e and each segment is carried by a block f provided with an inclined groove g of cross section in the shape of <B> T . </B> In all the grooves g are engaged keys h of cross section in the form of <B> T </B> provided for the sleeve j 'of the extension and contraction device j.
To allow the extension or contraction of such a cavity wheel a. the teeth c of which are engaged with a chain d, each toothed segment b is mounted on its support block f so as to be able to slide there between predetermined limits, being moreover under the control of a spring regulating it as following:
each toothed segment b has, on the surface opposite to that for view of the teeth c, a projection 1c, with inched faces k1 engaged with inclined faces dl of the piston <I> d. </I> The piston l receives in its interior a spring <I> in </I> which, resting on the block <I> f, </I> tends to move the piston away from the center of the cavity wheel a and to keep the segments b in position by the cooperation of the inclined faces 1z 'l'. In the normal driving or training position of any segment,
its projection k is in contact with one of the surfaces <I> f </I> l <I> f '</I> of the corresponding <I> f </I> block.
After a movement of the ex tension and contraction device j, along the longitudinal axis of the shaft e, the inclined keys in engagement with the respective grooves g of the blocks f force the latter and the corresponding segments to move radially and normally to the axis of the shaft e.
Although in the foregoing it has only been spoken of a single impression wheel with extension and contraction device j, it is obvious that two similar wheels with their extension and contraction device must be associated and arranged reciprocally with respect to one another as indicated for example in FIG. 4.
In this arrangement, the actuating device comprises a lever 7z which is pivoted at n 'between the shafts ee in such a way that with a movement of said lever n the two extension and contraction devices j associated with the two. two wheels a are actuated in opposite directions, producing the extension of one of the wheels and the contraction of the other.
It is obvious that the effective primitive circumference of the impression wheels must, when they drive or are driven, be equal to a whole number of pitches of their toothing and in order to allow the positions of the devices to be easily adjusted for this purpose. 'extension and contraction j, a segment with notches o is arranged near the control lever p combined with the lever 7z and provided with a pawl p' to engage with the notches o 'of the segment o.
In use, when the diameters of the cavity wheels have been chosen so that the pitch circumferences of these wheels are found to be substantially equal to a whole number of steps of their toothing, all the segments <I> b </ I > engaged with the chain <I> d </I> are moved until their protrusions touch one of the surfaces <I> f </I> l <I> f 1 </I> of the cavities of the blocks <I> f </I> and it is in this position that the normal training is carried out (fig. 1).
When it is desired to vary the speed ratio between the shafts e e, the lever p is moved along the notched segment o until the pawl p 'enters the desired notch o'. This movement of the leverp will change through the intervention of the lever n the positions of the devices <I> j </I> by widening one indentation wheel <I> a </I> and contracting the other.
Obviously during the passage from one pitch diameter to another, the pitch circumference will not conform to the conditions specified to represent an integer number of teeth pitches and to allow the chain d to properly mesh with the teeth c, all the segments b carrying these teeth, with the exception of one, are temporarily displaced from their normal dragging positions, the non-displaced segment b trans temporarily placing all the load as shown in fig. 2.
As the wheel a turns, this segment b is released from the chain d and takes its released position, the load being transported to the next neighboring segpient b, which is released in turn, following the operation continuing until a pitch circumference embracing a whole number of step lengths of the den ture is reached.
It will easily be understood that by this arrangement to increase or decrease the number of teeth simultaneously engaged with the chain d, any change in diameter of the imprinted wheels a between the practicable limits can be effected.
