Process for the production of twist drills made of low-quality steel with a cutting plate made of high-quality steel welded into a slot of the drill workpiece. The idea of making twist drills, which consist of a shank slotted down to the bottom made of ordinary steel and a plate made of high-quality steel welded into this, which should give off the cut edges, is known per se. However, the implementation of this idea initially failed because the plate was given the shape of a long rectangle with straight edges at the top and bottom.
As a result, it was difficult to center the plate when it was welded in, because the plate kept slipping out again on one side or the other of the slotted shaft, and the welding, if it worked at all, was very poor, so that the drills could not be used were able to cope with greater stress. Furthermore, the drill twisted very easily at the transition point from the full to the slotted shaft, because here, as a result of the sudden stop of the plate, the reinforcement for the shaft, which was already weakened by the slot, was lost. However, twist drills are very easily exposed to tearing and breaking off, especially when the drilling machine spindle has a dead gear.
In this case, as is known, when the drill emerges from the borehole, a sudden pressure occurs, which has the consequence that the drill lips stick to the edge of the not yet completely drilled hole. This then makes the drill unusable. In order to avoid the sudden union transition from the full to the weakened shank through the slot, it has already been proposed to provide the plate with a V-shaped incision at the top, which lies against the also before jumping slot base on the drill shaft. This arrangement also centered the plate in the drill, but it was not welded to the drill. A fixed connection between the plate and the drill was not created with such a drill.
These disadvantages are avoided by the method of the present invention. The invention consists in that .the slot in the drill work piece is not carried out all the way down, then the plate, which on one side also lies down by means of a pointed extension against the correspondingly designed slot base at the drill end, is welded to the drill work piece and Finally, the full end of the drill is removed after the MM tool has been rotated to form the drill tip.
In this process, a drill workpiece that is slotted down to the bottom is not used, into which the plate is inserted, but the drill is only provided with a recess so that a full head remains at the bottom, which makes it possible that the drill shaft can be grasped well when welding the plate and the latter with the one-sided extension at the bottom provides a support that enables the safe centering of the plate at the lower end.
Without this full, lower drill shaft piece, which can be referred to as a lost head because it is removed after the drill shaft has been turned into a twist drill, and without the lower extension of the plate, it is also impossible to turn the drill shaft with insert plate without the weld of the plate at the bottom tears open again when twisted, as experience has shown. The drawing illustrates an example of the method according to the invention.
