Apparatus for recovering tin-plating metals by electrolysis. The present invention relates to an apparatus for the electrolytic treatment of tinned waste and tinned articles of all kinds, with a view to recovering tin metals.
This apparatus comprises a drum serving as a receptacle for the waste to be treated, in which there are longitudinally arranged cathode plates extending inwardly. Preferably the cathode plates are arranged radially and divide the drum into two or more longitudinal compartments, for example screens of expanded metal, wire mesh, or other materials allowing free access to the tube. electrolyte at the cathode, being arranged on either side of. each cathode to prevent waste and other tinned articles which constitute the anode material from coming into contact with the cathode.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation in section; Fig. 2 is an end view, in section; Fig. 3 shows, in section and on a larger scale, part of one of the ends of the drum; Fig. 4 is iine section. trarisvei-sale of the drum; Fig. 5 is a detail of a device used to supply current to the interior cathodes.
a designates a tank capable of being heated by steam through L pipes; c designates the drum whose hollow axis d is supported by rollers c supported by uprights f. External cathodes, g are placed in the tank; each of these cathodes is suspended from the rod area h, which is supported by brackets j, fixed to the tank, and through which the rod passes the current for these cathodes.
A pair of rings h and l bring current to the axis, d, of the drum and, consequently, to this drum itself and to the anodized material contained therein.
The cathodes g are curved concentrically to the axis of the drum and their lower end is supported on rollers) za (see fig. 2). A bowl ii is disposed below the drum.
The ends of the drum are formed by solid perforated trays o, on which is arranged expanded metal, wire mesh or other suitably perforated material constituting the sides, 2), of the drum. The drum is divided into three parts by means of screens q, of expanded metal, for example, secured to angles along the axis.
On each end plate and on the axis are attached parts r, in the form of gutters or channels and supporting insulating parts, s, porcelain or other suitable material, forming guides in which are slipped the plates i constituting cathodes.
By means of the cathode plates and screens the drum is thus divided into longitudinal compartments (shown three in number) and these compartments are provided with suitable openings for loading and unloading. On one side of each compartment are doors to. hinges u (fig. 4), with titi any suitable clasp such as a rod passing through eyelets of v hinges arranged along the plates.
In order to bring current to the plates t forming the internal cathodes, each plate is provided with a rolled edge iv, in which is disposed a rod x, which projects at the ends and is embraced by clamps, M secured to the end plates of the drum, but isolated from these trays. The construction of the clamps is shown in fig. 3 and 5. In these clamps are attached copper rods, z, constituting conductors and connected to a slip ring 2.
Three rods z are joined together in 3 (fig. 2) and, from the junction 3 at each end of the drum, a conductor goes through an insulating sleeve 4 which is arranged in the interior of the axis d: and ending in the slip ring 2.
With this arrangement a number of cathode plates can be arranged in a single drum, each plate having its two surfaces exposed to receive the tinning metals. The cathode is inside the waste mass which is contained inside the drum, although this mass is prevented from coming into contact with it, and each cathode plate is easy to remove and replace so to make it possible to recover the oxide of tin or the like, deposited therein.
The arrangement is very practical and lends itself to application to large installations making it possible to treat large quantities of waste,. to de-tin them, in a faster way than up to now.
If desired, a removable basket or liner can be provided within each compartment to facilitate loading and unloading of waste or other tinned articles to be treated.
