La distance entre les centres de la pièce de contact j6 des cartouches et de l'arrêt j20 (lu coulisseau est moindre due la longeur de la course du coulisseau et les dispositions relatives des organes g j6 j20 sont telles due, pendant la plus grande partie du mouve ment de va-et-vient du coulisseau, celui-ci se déplace au-dessus de la pièce de contact j6 et (le l'arrèt j20, ou au-dessus de l'arrêt seule ment;
Le mouvement du coulisseau au delà de l'arrêt j= coïncide avec l'achèvement d'u mouvement d'avancement. du tambour du niat;asiii sous l'action du dispositif d'a vancement h et, pourvu due, à ce moment, il se trouve dans 1a trémie (les cartouches prêtes à. tomber, la eartouche du bas tombe clans la position d'alimentation sur la pièce de contact jl;
Machine for lining magazines and Lewis machine guns. The object of the invention is a machine for filling (the cartridges the magazines of the Lewis machine guns.
In this machine, the alternating operations of introducing a cartridge into the magazine and rotating the drum of the latter are carried out by two separate devices, both actuated by a common control mechanism.
One embodiment of the object (the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a front view showing the machine mounted on a body ammunition, with a magazine attached to the front of the machine; Fig. 2 is a plan of the machina, and Fig. 3 is an elevation, seen from the side where the control crank is located: Fig. . î is an elevation, on a larger scale, of the front of the machine, the positions occupied by the drum and the central part of the magazine being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 5 is a plan to the same scale as Fig. 4, showing some organs in horizontal section; Fig. 6 is an elevation in section, showing the arrangement (the cartridge hopper.

The fi g. 11 is a quick sectional view of the magazine of a Lewis machine gun, showing the central part or part in elevation, and FIG. 12 is a schematic view showing the position in which the part or t; artie cuiiltale (the magazine is immobilized with respect to the orifice (the exit of the keys, when the magazine is spun to the front of the maclllne.
The machine 1 epri'-entée ail cle-sitl enn7- takes a cartridge feeding device consisting of a reciprocating slide g operating through the round of a vertical cartridge hopper a and a device d 'progress of the store including a ratchet h K3 intended to engage
in the notches or recesses formed in the periphery of a Lewis store. These two devices are actuated, with the moly in a control crank, by a mechanism which is arranged so that the pawl acts to communicate the advance movement to the magazine drum during the return stroke of the slide. g bucket, while during the push stroke of the cartridge, the pawl performs a return movement which is ineffective. During this time, the store is immobilized by a stop pawl i which also engages in peripheral notches or recesses tdtu store.
The stop mechanism, which prevents "throws" or "mancq @ es" from occurring, is located in the machine bed and is directly controlled by the weight of the cartridges in the hopper; ee iii méeinisnie is intended to stop the operation of the machine by stopping the slide g if a cartridge is not, at the time vou read, clans the path of said slide.
The hopper a and all the active parts are mounted on a support plate c fitted with claws e2 c3 and a clamping screw and nut c4 c5, so that the machine can be securely fixed. on an ammunition crate as shown in fig. 1.
The hopper is arranged vertically across the plate c and its lower front part has a horizontal outlet opening d3 (fig. 6) for the cartridges, through which the cartridges are successively pushed laterally into the magazine which is fixed. on an axle e supporting (fi, g. 12) said store on the front of the machine, in a vertical plane perpendicular to the duct ale outlet of the hopper.
The interior shape of the hopper is such that the cartridges can fall into it only in one position, that is to say with their cu lots facing to the left (fig. 1) and the bottom of this hopper has an opening for the slide g. To prevent the cartridges from rolling and coming out by gravity through the outlet opening, a spring-loaded hinged tab a3 (fig. 4) is arranged outside the latter and is intended to oscillate outwardly when the cartridge of the bottom is pushed out of the hopper by the slide. This device duo avoids two cartridges then feels it fall side by side in front of the slide during its internal race.
At the end of the outlet opening of the cartridges near which the bullet of the cartridge is located, there is a d1-0 spring which, when each cartridge falls into the feeding position, exerts a thrust against the end. the bullet and moves the key to the left, thus keeping the cartridge in the desired position to ensure proper engagement of its edge or base with a retaining groove in each compartment of the magazine drum.
Lo slide g operates according to tirun periencliculaire plane z that of the bad-assin and acts during its active stroke, to push the cartridge located lowest in the hopper through the outlet orifice and make it enter 1o magazine.
Above the anterior part of the slider is fixed an inclined latch% l, forming a spring, which, during the supply stroke to the key, lifts all the cartridges in the hopper except the one located the lowest.
qpii is pushed into the magazine, thus relieving this cartridge of the weight of the other keys which are found in the uremia. During the return stroke of the slide. said spring is withdrawn from under the column of cartridges and allows the next cartridge to fall into the feed position behind the outlet of the hopper. This continual lifting of the cartridges maintains them. free clans. hopper and helps prevent jams.
To activate the alternately functioning magazine supply device q and the device h. of advancement: from the magazine, the machine comprises a crank f and a crank plate f 7 which are carried by a shaft f2 and connected to the slide g by a connecting rod f '(fig. 2).
In order to prevent accidents, if the gunner continues to turn the crank in the event that jamming occurs, or when the magazine has been completely filled, or if the machine is automatically stopped, the crank f is connected to the shaft f2 by a clutch with which engages a spring which transmits the movement to actuate the cartridge advancement devices and the magazine as long as no abnormal resistance is offered to their movement.
But, if one or the other of these advancement devices is stopped and one continues to turn the level, the resistance offered then to the rotation of the shaft has the effect of disengaging this clutch and allows the crank to turn without producing a control movement and independently of the shaft f2.
The support e, on which the ma gasin is fixed, is placed on the front of the machine. the bale is placed on the side of the end of the dt3 goose outlet duct, as shown in fig. 4. By fixing the magazine, the hole formed in the central part of the latter is engaged on the support e and this central part is then momentarily and firmly fixed to the machine by means of a key k, 2, presented by the support e and which engages in a groove k3 formed in the central part of the store.
This key is arranged so that it maintains the central part of the magazine exactly in the position shown in fig. 12: in this figure, the edge b 'of the opening bs formed in the face of the central part of the magazine extends horizontally in a plane slightly below the lower edge of the outlet dc ale of the hopper , so that when each cartridge is pushed sideways through the outlet port,
the end of the cartridge where the bullet is located will pass through the opening b8 and into the groove or duct b2 of the central part of the magazine. At the same time, the rim or base of the

The magazine drum is then momentarily immobilized by the stop pawl i while the pawl of advancement performs its upward movement to engage with the next shoulder, b7 and the slide introduces the next cartridge into the immobilized magazine.
In order that the drum advancement mechanism does not interfere with the placement and removal of the magazine, the advancement pawl h may have some play or lateral movement on its pivot h2, but it is normally subjected to the load. 'action of a spring (the lateral thrust h1 which keeps the pawl h3 in firm contact with the periphery of the drum. However, this res comes out is controlled by the stop pawl i, (the Miss so that when said stop is in its normal or active position, it keeps the spring under tension and forces it to exert pressure which keeps the pawl in contact with the drum.
When the stop pawl is turned to the side, prior to removing the machine, the spring is no longer subjected to tension and pressure ceases to be exerted on the feed pawl which can then rotate. freely around its pivot, that is to say that the advancement pawl moves away from the drum and thus does not provide an obstacle to the removal of the magazine.
The pivot i2 of the stop pawl is supported in the base and carries a hook it intended to be folded over the edge of the drum (fig. 1 and 5j and to keep the latter stable during its rotational movement. The pivot i2 also carries a knurled knob i4 by means of which the stop pawl i and the hook il can be rotated together to bring them into their active position or out of the active position. Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5 show the positions occupied by the pawl and the hook when packing a magazine, as shown in Figures 9 and 10 show the positions in which these members must be rotated to enable removal of the magazine.
The stop pawl is normally hand held around the periphery of the drum by a <B> MI </B> spring which bears on a corner of the pawl hub m6 and allows the stop pawl arm to flex outwardly enough to that the shoulders of the drum rub and pass under the nose of the stopper pawl each time said drum is by rotation, advanced by one step by the pawl for advancing the magazine.
Co hub in6 acts as a cam to control the spring h of the pawl advancement and its edge has two flats at right angles m7 mris, located at different distances from the center of the pawl pivot. The free end of the spring h1 bears against said hub, as shown in fig. 9 and 10 and the flats m7 m8 are arranged in such a way that, when the pawl i and the hook i3 are moved away from the magazine, the flat m7 closest to the center of the pivot comes behind the spring and stops the- voltage to which the latter is .. subjected, leaving the pawl. forward movement is free to play or move the tally on its pivot.
But, when the stop pawl and the hook are returned to their normal position, the other flat area, here, presses on the spring. which, due to the greater distance separating. this flat, our clip in the center of the pivot, is then pushed inwardly and maintained in the position in which it forces the advancement pawl <B> h </B> to press against the periphery of the drum (see magazine .
The machine can be used to line magazines. Lewis of the model used for infantry machine guns (4'ï because keys) or of the model used for machine guns against aircraft (9i cartridges). The hook. i l of the stop pawl i is mounted in an adjustable manner on the frame, so that the distance separating it from the front. of the hopper can be modified to suit the depth of the store to be filled. That is to say that the pivot i2 which carries the i3 i members, is mounted so as to be able to slide, in a hole made in the side of the base, as shown in dotted lines in fig.
5, this pin having two grooves i 'il, with one or the other of which is intended to engage a suitably disposed retaining spring, depending on the position in which said pin is placed. Thus, when the spindle i2 has been adjusted to place the hook and the pawl in the desired position, depending on the size of the store to be filled, all of these members are automatically locked, secured by the res sort (hold until another change is needed.
To ensure a corresponding adjustment of the magazine support, this support is also mounted, slidably, in the base and is provided with a tightening screw, serving to secure said support in one or the other. other of the two positions.
The automatic shut-off mechanism to prevent blanks or empty spaces from occurring in the magazine is clearly shown in fig. 6, 7 and S. This mechanism is carried by the lower side of a plate. j2 which is supported by the table c and on which the cartridge feed slide g moves back and forth. Said stop mechanism comprises a control lever j3 and a slide stop lever j4. The lever j <B > '</B> consists of a pair of plates spaced apart from each other but rigidly connected together (fig. 8) and is suspended from a fork-shaped support j1 presented by the underside of the plate j2 .
The end (read the vier j3 furthest from the hopper carries a counterweight j5, while the end closest to the hopper has a part j6 which can come into contact with the cartridges, this part j6 being engaged in a hole formed in the plate j2 just below the open bottom of the hopper. By means of this arrangement, when each cartridge falls from the hopper into its supply position between the outlet port of the latter and the slide, it rests on the contact piece j6.
The slider stop lever j1 is placed between the side plagues of the control lever and is independently pivotally mounted on a support jll arranged next to the support j10 of the control lever. The rear end of lever j4 is pivotally mounted at j9 'on the counterweight end of the control lever; its front part carries a stop j20 for the slide, this stop being disposed (as shown in fig. 6 and 7i) in another opening j22 formed in the plate j2 at a certain distance from the part (the contact i6.
The distance between the centers of the contact piece j6 of the cartridges and of the stop j20 (the slider is less due to the length of the travel of the slider and the relative arrangements of the components g j6 j20 are such due, for the greater part of the back and forth movement of the slide, it moves above the contact piece j6 and (the stop j20, or above the stop only;
this arrangement prevents the body j6 or j20 from being brought above the upper face of the plate j2 by the action of the counterweight carried by the two viers, but when the slide ar edge to. at the end of its return stroke, it passes the stop j "'and the stop mechanism is no longer subjected to the retaining or immobilizing action that the slide exerted on it.
The movement of the slider beyond the stop j = coincides with the completion of a forward movement. of the drum of the niat; asiii under the action of the advancement device h and, provided due, at this moment, it is in the hopper (the cartridges ready to fall, the lower handle falls into the position of power supply on the contact piece jl;
at this time, the weight of the ladle coaches bearing on said contact piece will overcome the tendency of the counterweight to lift the stopper of the slide, the rotation of the control crank will force the slide to its feed stroke. tion and the bottom cartridge will be pushed into the magazine drum compartment which at this time coincides with the outlet of the hopper.
When the slide advances, it passes first on the stop jl- and then on the contact piece j ', so that before the weight of the cartridges is removed from the key lever control, the mechanism of stop is already subject to the action of retaining or immobilizing the slide which moves on it and this stop mechanism cannot thus act to stop the operation of the machine.
2 However, if at the moment when the slide slides past (the stop j 2, there is not on the contact part of the control lever a sufficient weight of cartridges ready to fall to overcome the action of the counterweight , the latter then acts immediately and, by oscillating the levers j3 j4, raises the stop j20 in the path of the slide and also makes the contact piece j6 protrude above the surface of the plate j2.
By this operation, any subsequent rotation of the control crank cannot cause the slide to move forward and erases the feed device of the magazine as well is connected to the control device of the slide or is actuated by this device. It follows that the stopping or locking of the said slider if n zultaneously immobilizes the mechanism for advancing the drum and thus prevents any movement from being communicated to the latter, which movement would have the effect that a comparison the magazine drum unit does not contain a cartridge key.
3 The key advancement devices because the magazine drum advancement side keys are released automatically as soon as a sufficient weight of cartridges rests again on the contact piece j6 of the control lever to overcome the so-called counterweight action ; at this moment, the oscillation thus caused of the levers removes the stop j2 from the path of the slide and leaves said feed and advancement devices free to perform their respective functions, when the wheel is again rotated. crank key command.
The key hopper of the machine can include a vertical cartridge guide into which the cartridge caps are introduced and t along which said cartridges fall by gravity; this guide can be combined with a device allowing magazines to be introduced into the upper extremity (read guide, cartridges to be removed mechanically from magazines and empty magazines to be automatically expelled For this purpose, an opening o is formed in the side of the cartridge guide so that a full magazine is introduced laterally through this opening, which is formed to securely support a magazine while the cartridges are being removed.
The two lower corners of the loader take their point of support on corresponding stops presented by the key bottom the opening and the flanges or jams on the sides of the loader bear on the opposite sides of said opening.
A. Inside the cartridge guide and on one side of the opening o is mounted a lever o- subjected to. the action of a spring. This lever acts as an extractor or ejector of the cliators and is normally put in position by its spring ol so that its lower end engages with the upper part of the lever. 'one of the edges or beads chi charger, when the latter is.
placed in the opening. When the charger is. in this position, the caps (the car keys are located above or coincide with the grooves formed in the guide. The cartridges are removed mechanically from the magazine and engaged in the grooves of the guide by means of a plunger. geur p mounted in the upper part of the guide and arranged so that, when lowered, it drives the proud cartridges from the magazine and engages them in the guide.
after which the plunger is returned to its normal position by a spring p =. The extractor arm o5 or the magazine ejector is so arranged that it is in the path of the magazine head p3 \ and, when all the cartridges have been expelled from the magazine, the head p2 comes strike on the arm o 'of the ejector and communicate to it an angular movement which removes the empty magazine from its seat in the cartridge guide and drives it out through the opening o. The ejector spring then returns it to its normal position to allow the introduction of another full magazine.
