Compressed air and vacuum pumps for electric railways. The electric locomotives and motor vehicles equipped with vacuum brakes require, in addition to the vacuum pump, an air compressor to operate the various auxiliary equipment belonging to the electrical company, and if the railways are steeply sloping, a second, separate vacuum braking device can be used to brake along longer slopes to be able to hold back the locomotive in order to have the locomotive brake ready in an emergency. These two brakes, as well as the air compressor, each require a motor for their operation, which causes high acquisition and maintenance costs.
In addition to the large space required to set up these three systems, another major disadvantage is the high level of noise from previous vacuum pumps and compressors, which disrupts rail operations.
The subject of the invention allows such disadvantages to be avoided- It has a three-cylinder piston pump driven by a motor with worm gear, one of which is used to generate compressed air and the other to produce a vacuum. The drawing shows the invention in application to an electric locomotive, for example, namely the figure shows three aligned cylinders with pistons as air and vacuum pumps; which have a common crosshead. The drive and the two cylinders of the vacuum pumps are partly seen in section.
The piston rod 1 of the compressed air pump 2, as well as the. Piston rod 3 of the two cylinders 4 and 5 are guided through the cross head, which has a slot 7 at right angles to the piston rods, for receiving the sliding block 8, in which the pin 9 of the crankshaft 10 engages. The worm wheel 11 sits firmly on the crank shaft 10. The upward and downward movement of the crosshead 6 with the piston rods 1 and 3 is carried out by the clotor 12 and the worm 13, which engages the worm wheel 11. A line 14 connects the compressed air cylinder 2 with the compressed air container.
By moving the piston 16 up and down in the cylinder 4, vacuum is generated in the main line 17 leading to the pull brake. The piston 16 has a piston rod 18 which is designed as a piston and which moves up and down in the bore of the cylinder 5 in the cylinder cover 19 and generates a vacuum in the connected line 20. In the line 20 a changeover valve 21 is installed, which in the position I the cylinder 5 with the separate vacuum brake of the locomotive binds ver, in the position II, however, the same connects to the line 17 of the train brake. For the latter, the usable area of the piston 16 is reduced by the cross-section of the piston rod 18 in the first operating case, but not impaired in the second operating case because the cylinder 5 then also works on the traction bush.
If necessary, the compressed air pump can also be used to operate an air pressure pump.
