Abstract
A mains socket (3) has a spring strip (1) of elastic and electrically insulating material, e.g. PVC, inserted into a longitudinal slot (2) above the centre contact. At the free end of the strip a transverse projection (4) stands away from the edge of the socket until a plug (6) is coupled to it. The strip then enters a recess (7) in the plug until the projection snaps into a groove (5) at its end. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for measuring instrument and portable computer. Conenctor minimises risk of accidental coupling without increasing complexity of intentional coupling.
Description
The invention relates to an electrical connector comprising a plug and a socket, each of these parts comprising mutual contact parts.
The mobile sockets which are now produced, according to the EEC 22 standard, are only held in the appliance plug by friction and by the spring force of the electrical contacts. Therefore, there is no protection against accidental disconnection. Mechanical locking of the mobile socket is however recommended, since the consequences of accidentally stopping an electrical appliance are generally not desired. On the other hand, the electrical connection must nevertheless be easily disconnected and to be restored, especially for portable equipment such as measuring instruments and portable computers.
The task of the present invention is to provide measures which avoid accidental disconnection without increasing the complication of voluntary disconnection.
This task is solved by the fact that the plug or socket has a locking member subjected to an elastic action to cooperate with a notch in the socket or plug to prevent accidental disconnection, a control part being arranged on a surface. outside of the plug or socket to be operated manually.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the connector which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the connector socket.
Fig. 2 shows the plug which indicates the other part of this connector.
A spring 1 of elastic and electrically insulating material, such as for example hard PVC or the like, is inserted into the longitudinal slot 2 provided for this purpose in the movable socket 3. In its relaxed position, the spring 1 comes flush with the surface of the socket 3. The spring 1 has a spout 4 on its front end which protrudes from the surface of the socket 3 and which locks in a groove 5 in the plug 6, described below.
The locking groove 5 extends parallel to and is adjacent to the internal front face 7 of the plug 6 in order to obtain a maximum lever arm for the spring 1. The groove 5 has a section corresponding to that of the spout 4 of spring 1.
The plug can be disconnected by pressing the spring 1. The plug can nevertheless be used with any plug corresponding to the EEC 22 standard, because the spring 1 can sink into the slot 2.
The surface of the spout 4 which is opposite the articulation of the spring 1 can be inclined so as to allow the plug 3 to be pulled out of the plug 6 by applying an exactly calculable force. The section of the spring 1 will be dimensioned so that a light pressure of a finger on the spring 1 is enough to release the socket 3.
It is of course possible to provide alternative embodiments and the spring 1 could be mounted on a movable plug intended to be introduced into a wall socket, the latter then having the locking groove. The spring 1 could be replaced by any other locking member subjected to an elastic action displaceable by means of a manual control part disposed on an external surface of the plug or socket.
