BESCHREIBUNG
Fig. 1 einen schematischen Querschnitt durch das Messinstrument,
Fig. 2 einen schematischen Aufbau des gesamten Gerätes,
Fig. 3 einen Teil der Sende- und Empfangsschaltung.
DESCRIPTION
Previous devices for determining the flow velocity of gases or gas mixtures use, for example, the differential pressure which arises from a flow resistance as the measurement variable. Devices of this type have various disadvantages: First, a limited linear measuring range; secondly, an interfering flow resistance, which is perceived as negative, especially in medical applications, and which is also changed in its geometric dimensions by condensing water vapor, and thereby provides incorrect measurement results; thirdly, devices for measuring high flow velocities have a dead volume that is too large for medical applications; fourthly, almost all devices of this type show strong resonance behavior when excited at higher frequencies.
Another measurement method uses the changes in resistance of thermistors as a parameter for the flow velocity. Devices of this type also have various disadvantages: firstly, it is generally not possible to detect the direction of flow; secondly, there is a strong flow disturbance because the thermistors are placed in the center of the cross section; thirdly, a mean measurement is made based on a punctual measurement.
The present invention aims to register in a free pipe cross-section, ie without any disturbance of the flow geometry, flow speed, flow volume, temperature and average molar mass of a gas mixture in the measuring channel. The device has a low dead volume, negligible flow resistance, a wide linear working range and a frequency range that is greatly expanded compared to other devices.
According to the invention, the device is characterized in that the quantities sought are determined from the transit times of sound pulses which move with or against the flowing medium and the measured temperature.
An embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is explained below with reference to the drawings. Show it:
1 shows a schematic cross section through the measuring instrument,
2 shows a schematic structure of the entire device,
Fig. 3 shows a part of the transmission and reception circuit.
The device shown in a schematic cross section in FIG. 1, also referred to below as the measuring head, contains in chambers 1 and 2 the transmission and reception elements S1 and S2 necessary for the measurement. These are, for example, condenser microphones, which are suitable for both transmitting and receiving operations. The cells S1 and S2, which are arranged at an angle to the flow channel 5, send the sound through the radiation openings 3 and 4 to the opposite cell. Electrically insulating lateral guide elements 13 and the diffusers 12 facing the measuring channel firmly position the cells in the chambers 1 and 2.
A connecting hole leads from each of these chambers to the upper chamber 7, in which an electronic circuit is accommodated, which serves as a transmission / reception switch and amplifies the received signals. On a side wall of the chamber 7, two multipole sockets (not visible in the sectional drawing) are attached, via which the measuring head is connected to the control unit. Connection bores lead from the upper chamber to the lower chamber 6. This second, approximately the same size chamber contains the electronic circuits necessary for temperature measurement. The two electronic circuit groups are housed separately from one another for reasons of mutual influence. The temperature measurement is carried out with a thermocouple 11, which is inserted into the measuring channel 5 via a screw with a pressed-in plastic middle part.
The holder of the thermocouple must on the one hand enable the same to be exchanged, but on the other hand also be leakproof so that the ingress of liquids or other contaminants into chamber 6 is prevented. The supply and the signal feedback to the control unit takes place via chamber 7 and the sockets present there in the side wall. Heating elements which bring the measuring head to a temperature which is higher than the ambient temperature can be accommodated directly in the chambers 6 and 7 or in bores leading away from these chambers. A slight heating of the measuring head has the advantage that the condensation of water vapor on the surfaces of the measuring channel 5 can be avoided.
In medical applications, heating the measuring head will be inevitable in most cases due to the high humidity of the exhaled air.
The measuring channel 5 has a constant circular cross section over the entire length. The large radiation openings 3 and 4 are provided with diffusers 14, so that the circular cross section of the measuring channel is also retained in these areas. These diffusers are made of, for example, fine-mesh, water-repellent plastic nets.
The sound-absorbing surface 15 of the measuring channel serves on the one hand to suppress disturbing sound reflections, and on the other hand the damping elements 10 attached to the channel ends, which are made, for example, of a soft plastic. Two different, interchangeable end pieces are available for the measuring channel: the short version 8 is used to achieve the smallest possible dead volume, the longer version 9 is designed so that a mouthpiece suitable for medical applications can be inserted.
A variant of the electronic circuit accommodated in chamber 7 for controlling one of the combined transmit / receive cells is shown in FIG. An arrangement of 4 diodes serves as a passive element for switching between the transmission and reception phase: transmission signals S with an amplitude which is much larger than twice the forward voltage of the diodes reach the condenser microphone Z biased with a polarization voltage Vp. Since the reception signals are very much smaller than a diode forward voltage, the diodes decouple the transmitting and receiving part during the receiving phase following the transmission phase. The received signals thus reach an amplifier A with a high input resistance directly via an impedance (R2 parallel to C), for example implemented by an operational amplifier.
The clamp diodes D5 and D6, which limit the input signal to V + and V-, prevent the amplifier from being overdriven during the transmission phase.
The operation of the device shown is explained with reference to Figure 2. At the beginning of a measuring cycle, the processing and control unit B4 stimulates the transmission signal generation B1; the cells S1 and S2 of the measuring head K controlled by the transmission signal generator B1 then simultaneously emit a short ultrasound pulse. The two pulses now travel against each other through the measuring channel and reach the opposite cell. Since the transmission signal generation Bl is now in the idle phase, the incoming pulses can be received and amplified. If a flowing gas flows through the measuring channel, the two transit times of the sound impulses are different: if the direction of sound propagation and flow are the same, the transit time is shortened, if the direction is opposite, it is extended.
The amplified reception signals, as well as the signals from the temperature probe, now go from the measuring head to the control unit.
There they are processed in a preprocessing unit B2 and fed to the signal detection circuits B3. These determine the transit times of the two sound pulses by means of known electronic cascaded counters and evaluate the signal of the temperature probe. With these two sound propagation times and the current value of the temperature, the processing and control unit B4, for example implemented by a circuit with a microprocessor, calculates the variables for flow velocity, flow volume, temperature and average molecular weight. The formulas mentioned in claims 4 and 5 are used in the calculation. The flow volume is determined by means of analog or digital integration of the flow rate.
A complete measuring cycle thus consists of three phases: sending the sound impulses, receiving them after crossing the measuring channel, processing the resulting data.
Such a measuring cycle takes about 1 to 2 ms in the device described.
