DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to an interconnection device for electronic cards. These cards, in particular those implementing processors, memories and interfaces, are normally connected by a bus interconnecting all the cards. The cards are usually grouped in a basket, the bottom of which is made up of a set of connectors for printed circuits connected by a flat cable or a printed circuit. The length of the bus implies an impedance adaptation, power amplifiers on each card and a sensitive signal propagation time with new electronic technologies. Such interconnection systems with relatively long buses are therefore expensive and inefficient.
Consequently, the aim of the present invention is to produce a device for interconnecting electronic cards of a computer which does not have the disadvantages mentioned above, this device being relatively inexpensive and making it possible to substantially shorten the length of the interconnections ( bus) between cards. This object is achieved by an interconnection device as described in claim 1.
By the fact that the electronic cards are arranged in a star from a central core and connected to each other by connectors supported by the central core, the distance between the ends of the cards coming in the vicinity of the central core, and consequently the length connections between these cards, becomes very weak, so that the problems mentioned above in connection with the length of the buses no longer exist. The device is relatively inexpensive by the fact that the connectors of the system according to the invention are of a much simpler design and much cheaper than the usual connectors for printed circuits. In addition, the connectors according to the invention are simply inserted into and supported by the central core, which facilitates assembly.
The invention will be described in more detail below, by way of examples and with the aid of the drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a basket comprising the interconnection device according to the invention,
FIG. 2 shows the configuration of the connectors connecting the electronic cards and the arrangement of these,
FIG. 3 shows the central core of the device of FIG. 1,
FIG. 4 shows the assembly of the connectors on the central core, and
FIG. 5 shows an interconnection device comprising two baskets according to FIG. 1.
The figure shows the general arrangement of the interconnection device according to the invention. The assembly is in the form of a basket 1 with a base 2 at the rear of which is mounted a central column or core 3 made of insulating material intended to support connection elements, or connectors 5, provided for connecting the electronic cards together 4. The base 2 can include a fan (not shown) which produces and directs air through the openings 6 in the base of the base in the direction of the arrows on the electronic cards 4 to cool them if necessary. It can be seen that the star arrangement of the cards favors the passage of cooling air between the cards.
FIG. 2 is a plan view showing the central core 3, for example made of ceramic, as well as the connection elements 5 and the: electronic cards 4. The connectors 5 are in the form of a circular or semi-circular crown of conductive material with an opening angle slightly greater than 180 to facilitate their positioning on the central core. The rings carry on their outer periphery contacts 10 in the form of elastic or non-elastic tabs, coming in one piece with the crown or attached, these contacts 10 coming to rest on the (printed) contacts of the electronic cards 4 or, as an alternative , these cards coming to be inserted in these contacts 10.
FIG. 2 shows that the use of electronic elements such as 7 (for example a driver) mounted by direct wire bonding towards the end of the cards facing the central core 3 and taking up little space in thickness on the cards, leads to an arrangement according to which the ends of the cards can be mounted very close together, so that the length of the interconnections between these cards is significantly shortened, which allows the use of low-power CMOS drivers. In addition, the distance between cards is normal from a certain distance from the central core, which facilitates cooling and allows connection to the card of standard electronic elements.
Figures 3 and 4 show that the central core 3 has a longitudinal groove 8 and a plurality of superimposed grooves 9 located respectively in planes perpendicular to the axis of the core. These grooves 9 are provided to receive the conductive rings 5 which, in their semi-circular shape, are simply inserted into the grooves and supported by them. Each crown carries at its inner periphery a positioning lug provided for engaging in the longitudinal groove 8. As indicated in FIG. 4, the central core 3 has a flat rear face and the crowns 5 end at each end with a protrusion 12 coming to rest thanks to the elasticity of the crowns against the flat face of the central core 3. This keeps the crowns in place on the central core.
The shape of the contacts or tabs 10 can be very varied, and the number of contacts 10 on the periphery of the rings depends on the application. It is also possible to provide two or more rings linked electrically and arranged in the same groove 9, which improves the electrical quality of the contacts.
The central core 3 according to Figures 3 and 4 can be replaced by alternately stacking circular conductive rings and insulating washers held together by a rod or a vertical screw.
The central core 3 according to FIGS. 3 and 4 may for example comprise a heating body (not shown) to allow the soldering and desoldering of the contacts of each electronic card 4 with the contacts 10 of the conductive rings 5, when a resis- minimum contact tance is desired. As an alternative, the central core 3 may include vertical longitudinal channels 13 in which a cooling fluid is circulated.
This makes it possible to cool, if necessary, the end of the electronic cards located near the central core.
Finally, to reduce the parasitic capacities, the shape of the contacts 10 of the rings 5 can change on each stage.
The above shows that the device according to the invention is of particularly simple and economical construction and that it guarantees good electrical quality of the contacts between the electronic cards 4 and the connectors 5, as well as a very good interconnection distance. reduced between cards leading to a minimum propagation time.
FIG. 5 shows that it is possible to produce a more advanced set of interconnections using two or more baskets of cards such as that of FIG. 1. Baskets 1 are arranged side by side in order to allow connections short 14 between electronic cards. The connections 14 between the baskets are made by logic elements called bus windows or gateways.
