REVENDICATIONS

CLAIMS
1. Thermal printer comprising a printing support intended to support a sheet to be printed, a carriage movable along this support, an ink ribbon, a printing head mounted movably on the carriage and a control mechanism capable of urge the print head and the ink ribbon during printing against the sheet to be printed and the support and to retract this head after printing the support, characterized in that it comprises at least two support members intended for urge the ink ribbon during printing on either side of the print head against the sheet to be printed and the support, the control mechanism being arranged so as to remove the two support members from the support, when it retracts the print head from the support.
2. Printer according to claim I, in which the ink ribbon is unwound from a supply reel and wound on a take-up reel, characterized in that the control mechanism comprises a locking member arranged so as to lock the reels when the head is removed from the print media.
3. Printer according to claim 2, characterized in that each of the support members consists of a roller pivotally mounted on a lever connected by a pivot shaft to the carriage, this lever comprising a first portion to which is fixed a spring intended urging the roller against the print medium and a second portion cooperating with the print head to disengage the roller from the cylinder when the print head is retracted by the control mechanism.
4. Printer according to claim 3, characterized in that the control mechanism comprises an electromagnet connected by a control rod to the print head, the locking member having a locking stirrup cooperating by its central part with this rod and arranged so as to lock by these two ends the hubs of the receiving and supplying coils, when the print head is removed from the print medium.
The present invention relates to a thermal printer comprising a printing support intended to support a sheet to be printed, a carriage movable along this support, an ink ribbon, a printing head mounted movably on the carriage and a mechanism for control likely to stress the print head and the ink ribbon during printing against the sheet to be printed and the support and to retract this head after printing the support.
Such a printer is for example described in Swiss patent No. 657323. In this thermal printer, the ink ribbon is inserted during printing with a predetermined pressure between the heating elements of the thermal head and the paper placed on the cylinder. that the printing is clear, it is essential that there is no relative movement between the ink ribbon and the paper during the deposition of the ink on the paper and until this deposition is completely dried. the known printer, where only the pressure of the thermal head against the cylinder holds the ribbon against the paper, small relative movements of the ribbon have been observed relative to the paper, causing an imprecise impression due to spreading of the ink on very short distances.
By the British patent No. 2137563A, a printer of the same kind is known which comprises two ribbon guides arranged on each side of the print head (FIGS. 57 to 60). These guides enable the paper to be pressed against a first side. the cylinder and, by a second face remote from the cylinder, to guide the ink ribbon, these two guides cannot however prevent relative movements of the ribbon, relative to the paper, being able to occur.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and the printer is characterized, for this purpose, in that it comprises at least two support members intended to urge the ink ribbon during printing on both sides. another of the print head against the print sheet and the support, the control mechanism being arranged so as to remove the two support members from the support, when it retracts the print head from the support.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the ink ribbon is unwound from a supply reel and wound on a take-up reel and the control mechanism comprises a locking member arranged so as to lock the reels when the head print is removed from the print media. Thus when the carriage must be moved without printing, the control mechanism simultaneously performs the withdrawal of the print head, the deactivation of the support members and the locking of the reels of the ink ribbon.
It should also be noted that a printer is known (EP 0098033) comprising a print head for printing an entire line arranged parallel to the axis of a cylinder and two rollers the length of the cylinder and making it possible to apply the ink ribbon and paper against the cylinder. This device is provided by a printer with a fixed print head and not mounted on a carriage moving along the cylinder.
The invention is set out below in more detail with the aid of drawings showing, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment.
Figure 1 shows a plan view of this embodiment.
Figure 2 is a cross section along II-II of Figure 1.
The thermal printer shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 comprises a frame 1 having side walls 1a and 1b, a cylinder 2 serving as a printing support for a sheet of paper 3 and a carriage 4 carrying a head 5 for printing by Thermal transfer. The carriage 4 is slidably mounted on two transverse bars 6 and 7 and moved by known drive means, not shown, along the cylinder 2.
The thermal print head 5 comprises a vertical row of heating elements 5a each connected to a control unit, not shown, allowing, by means of a printing signal, to circulate an electric current in the heating elements in order to cause the transfer ink from an ink ribbon 8 on the paper 3 under the influence of temperature and pressure. The thermal head is carried by a support piece 9 articulated to the carriage by means of a pivot 10. A spring 13 biases the head 5 against the cylinder 2. To release the print head 5 from the cylinder 2, the printer comprises an electromagnet 11 mounted on the carriage and comprising a control rod 12 fixed to the thermal head 5.
The ink ribbon 8 is contained in a cassette 15 and unwound from a supply reel 16 and wound on a take-up reel 17. The drive mechanism 20 of the ink ribbon 8 comprises a cord 21 stretched between the two walls of the frame 1 thanks to a spring 19. This cord 21 is wound around a drum 22 rotating on a shaft 23 of the carriage. A freewheel mechanism, not illustrated, connects the drum 22 to the shaft 23, in such a way that the latter is driven, when the carriage 4 moves in the writing direction, and that it turns in freewheel in the opposite direction. The shaft 23 drives the hub 27 of the take-up reel 17 by means of a friction clutch 24 comprising two discs 25, 26 biased by a spring, not shown, one against the other.
The hub 28 of the supply reel 16 is provided with braking means, not shown, described in detail in Swiss patent NO 657323.
The printer also comprises a locking stirrup 29 made of synthetic material integral with the control rod 12. This stirrup 29 comes into contact with the discs 26 and 30 to lock the receiving and discharging coils 16 when the electromagnet 11 is actuated and the print head 5 released from the cylinder. So the
ribbon 8 cannot be unwound when the carriage moves in the writing direction, for example following a tabulation command, the print head being retracted.
To ensure good contact between the ribbon 8 and the paper 3 during printing, the printer comprises two support members constituted by two rollers 35, 36 arranged on either side of the print head 5. Each rollers is mounted on a bent lever 37 by means of a rotation shaft 38. The levers 37 themselves are pivotally mounted around shafts 39 integral with the carriage 4.
A spring 40 connects the arms 41 of the two levers 37 and urges the rollers 35, 36 against the cylinder 2. The levers 37 have an arm 42 capable of cooperating with the print head 5 so as to remove the rollers 35, 36 from the cylinder against the action of the spring 40. when the print head 5 is retracted. In the printing position, the ink ribbon 8 is applied by the print head 5 and the two rollers 35, 36 against the paper 3. The rollers prevent the ribbon 8 from forming a pocket or a fold in front of the head 5 advancing in writing direction. The removal of the head 5 and the rollers 35, 36 and the locking of the hubs of the coils 16, 17 are effected by the engagement of the electromagnet 11 controlled by a central control unit not shown.
