Process according to Claim 1, characterized in that a reducing agent which stabilizes the methylene blue is added to the methylene blue solution before it is used.
The invention relates to a method for preventing the formation or growth of algae and slime-forming bacteria in open service water systems.
In process water systems, for example in cooling water systems, there are often heavy deposits of algae on the light-accessible areas of a cooling tower. Such deposits act as a filter for suspended solids in the water. If such a deposit of algae plus solid particles becomes larger, it can happen that parts of the deposit fall into the cooling tower cup and are carried into the cooling system. Due to the "thread-like" structure, there is the possibility of cross-linking in heat exchanger tubes. The result is a restriction of the water flow and a reduction in heat dissipation. Similarly, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria form deposits on the surfaces of heat exchanger tubes, resulting in a direct reduction in heat transfer. Ultimately, such deposits can lead to clogging of the heat exchanger. In order to optimize the performance of modern cooling water systems, particularly when using second-rate make-up water such as sewer water or reclaimed sewage, it is often necessary to add substances to the water to reduce biological activity to a minimum. It has now been proposed to use biocides for this purpose [Chemical Plants and Processes Journal March, 1980, pages 79-102].
Eine solche Stossdosierung von Bioziden bringt jedoch folgende Nachteile mit sich:When algae or slime formation is detected in a process water system, attempts have been made to solve these problems by dosing biocides in batches. However, such a surge dosing of biocides has the following disadvantages:
Only selection of the algae is possible with the biocides available on the market. A mixture of biocides that kills both the gram-negative and the gram-positive strains of algae is not possible.
b) Nach einer Stossdosierung verstopfen die abgestorbenen Teilchen die Filter.b) After a pulse dosing, the dead particles clog the filters.
c) Bei längerer Anwendung der Biozide besteht eine gewisse Resistenzgefahr.c) If the biocides are used for a longer period of time, there is a certain risk of resistance.
Since water losses in a recooling system due to desalination, evaporation and splashing water have to be collected with the help of a fresh water additive, the biocides are not continuously diluted. The biocides must therefore be metered in permanently in order to achieve a lasting effect. On the one hand, this is not a good solution for economic reasons and, on the other hand, because of the toxicity of the biocides.
The object of the invention is to be able to operate an open process water system free of algae and slime bacteria and largely free of other strains of bacteria. A method is to be created with which the formation or growth of algae and bacteria can be prevented in a non-toxic manner without great technical and economic effort.
The object is achieved according to the invention by adding an aqueous methylene blue solution to the process water. A reducing agent which stabilizes the methylene blue is advantageously added to the methylene blue solution before it is used. This can be hydroquinone, for example.
By permanently metering such a previously prepared methylene blue solution into the process water, the concentration of the methylene blue in the process water is kept constant, for example, at about 2 g/m3.
The process water colored in this way largely prevents algae growth due to its low transparency. Algae or microbiological organisms that are already present or still present act like filters and thereby concentrate the dye so strongly that they die off in a short time. The latter became clearly visible when driving over a recooling system with methylene blue solution for the first time. After just one day, 20 deep blue fields could be discerned in the mechanically cleaned collection pans of the cooling towers. When these areas were touched, a slight covering could be determined, which, however, completely disappeared after approx. 2 to 3 days.
The advantages of the method according to the invention compared to the methods of the prior art are evident: 25 1. The filters are no longer blocked by dead algae.
There is no longer any risk of the microorganisms becoming resistant.
Compared to the state of the art, there are a number of simplifications for the staff, for example easier handling of the process, because:
a) ein mühsames Früherkennen des Algenbewuchses, das die Einstellung einer rechtzeitigen Bioziddosierung, die zudem manuell überwacht werden muss, erst ermöglicht, nichta) a tedious early detection of algae growth, which makes it possible to set a timely biocide dosage, which also has to be monitored manually, not
35 mehr erforderlich ist;35 more is required;
b) das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren ungiftig ist;b) the method according to the invention is non-toxic;
c) eine nichtselektive Wirkung einer Breitband-Biozid-Mi-schung vermieden wird.c) a non-selective effect of a broad spectrum biocide mixture is avoided.
Die Erfindung wird anhand des folgenden Beispiels er-40 läutert:The invention is explained using the following example:
Several biocides were used with unsatisfactory success in an open recooling system of a 300 W refrigeration plant connected to a decarbonisation plant. Residues of dead algae kept forming, which was visible as a green substance and was visually indistinguishable from algae that were still alive.
These particles, together with the phosphate dosage necessary to prevent corrosion, formed a good breeding ground for new growth. The catch basins of the cooling towers therefore often had to be mechanically cleaned at great expense. The filters of the entire system also had to be cleaned twice a week.
b) Erfindungsgemässes Verfahren:b) Process according to the invention:
An aqueous methylene blue solution was continuously metered into the cooling water in the recooling water system described under a) with a capacity of 10 m3, so that the methylene blue concentration in the cooling water was 2 g/m3. Despite high summer temperatures and sunlight, no algae growth and no slime bacteria could be detected. The water was very clear and the filters no longer got dirty. After lengthy trials, the dosage of 2 g/m3 methylene-65 blue in the cooling water was deemed to be sufficient.
