Description
The invention relates to a carbon film resistor, in which a resistor layer containing carbon, a non-conductive pigment and a binder is applied to an electrically non-conductive carrier and provided with electrodes. The invention further relates to a method for producing a carbon film resistor, in which a suspension containing carbon, an electrically non-conductive pigment and a binder in a solvent is produced and then applied to an electrically non-conductive carrier which is provided with electrodes , after which the suspension is dried.
The invention is particularly applicable to carbon layer potentiometers (variable carbon layer resistors) which are supposed to have a resistance layer of high abrasion resistance, a low contact resistance and the possibility of a contact change via the resistance layer. Furthermore, it is desirable that the properties mentioned and also the resistance of the layer under the influence of solvents and moisture on the layer are not or hardly influenced.
When producing resistance layers by applying suspensions which contain carbon and non-conductive particles, it is desirable to start from suspensions which are as stable as possible. Such suspensions result in a sediment of particles stacked as densely as possible. For this purpose, the suspensions contain polymeric binders, which increase the mutual repulsion of the particles, so that no flocculent precipitates are formed and that conductive and non-conductive particles are prevented from mutually influencing their colloidal chemical behavior in such a way that low-density flocculent precipitates can occur. In practice, it has proven difficult to produce stable suspensions with the non-conductive particles already proposed for such layers, with which different resistance values can be obtained by changing the content of conductive and non-conductive particles. As a rule, a number of suspensions of different compositions are therefore produced in order to be able to form resistance layers with different resistance values. Another disadvantage of the commonly used non-conductive particles, such as silicon carbide, silicon dioxide, glass powder and the like, is that these are hard particles, which can lead to wear of the sliding contacts in potentiometers and can thereby cause an increase in the contact resistance and the change in contact resistance. Other commonly used fillers, such as molybdenum disulfide, do not have the latter disadvantage, but when used in resistance layers for carbon potentiometers, they have been found to impair the electrical properties (the temperature coefficient of the resistance TCR, the moisture resistance and the noise).
The object of the invention is to remedy the disadvantages mentioned as far as possible.
This object is achieved in a carbon film resistor according to the invention in that the resistor layer contains carbon fluoride (CF) n as an electrically non-conductive pigment. In the given gross formula (CF) n, n means that a large number of (CF) groups, which cannot be defined in more detail, is present in the compound concerned.
«Journal of the Electrochem. Soc. of Japan» 32 [1], S. 17-25 [1964]). The connection (CF) n can e.g. can be obtained by reacting graphite with fluorine at a temperature of about 400 ° C. The reaction product is gray to white and is electrically non-conductive (see, for example, "Journal of the Electrochem. Soc. Of Japan" 32 [1], pp. 17-25 [1964]). Like graphite, the product has the properties of a lubricant.
Dadurch, The invention is based on the finding that stable suspensions can be obtained with carbon and with carbon fluoride (CF) n with the same solvent and the same binder and the same binder concentration, and that these suspensions, with a specific pigment volume concentration, give both separate and mixed layers of optimal packing. Thereby,
Die angebrachten Suspensionsschichten können dann alle auf gleiche Weise und opti5 that such suspensions are mixed in different ratios, carbon layers with different resistivities but otherwise the same properties can be obtained. Potentiometers with different resistance values all have the same temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), the same contact resistance (RC), the same contact resistance change (CRV) and the same sensitivity to moisture and solvents. In particular, this results in an advantage if potentiometers have to be produced in which the specific resistance of the carbon layer changes with the point in the contact path (so-called logarithmic potentiometers). With such potentiometers, the voltage taken off does not change or changes almost not with the change in temperature and relative humidity. Such resistance can e.g. are obtained by dividing the path over which the contact travels into twelve parts and by changing the mixing ratio of the suspensions on each subsequent part to deposit a layer with a greater specific resistance than that of the preceding part. The applied suspension layers can then all in the same way and opti5

The inventive method according to claim 2 is therefore suitable for the industrial production of variable carbon film resistors with different resistance values.
Nun wurde gefunden, The ratio between the pigment volume concentrations and the binder content of the stable suspensions can preferably be chosen such that layers with optimal properties (TCR, RC, CRV etc.) are obtained when the suspension layer dries and any post-curing. When mixing the suspensions, it has surprisingly been found that the mixed suspension then also results in an optimal resistance layer. Optimal mechanical properties are obtained if the binder content in the resistance layer is such that the pores between the pigment particles are at least almost completely filled. Now it has been found
Die Lösungsmittelmenge wird an die erforderliche Viskosität bei dem angewandten Aufbringungsverfahren angepasst. that not only the mechanical properties but also the electrical properties are optimal at the same concentration ratios. The usual types of carbon, such as carbon black, graphite and the like, can be used in the carbon film resistors according to the invention. Suitable binders are e.g. Lacquer resins based on urea and melamine formaldehyde resins, as are commercially available. The suspensions can be poured out in thin layers on the substrates to be coated or e.g. attached by a screen printing process. The amount of solvent is adjusted to the required viscosity in the application process used.
The sensitivity to moisture and solvents in the carbon layer is measured as a change in resistance. In the test method used, the resistance changed by at most 20% when using a layer with optimal properties, i.e. in a layer in which the pores between the pigment particles are completely or almost completely filled with binder under the action of moisture and solvents. If there are deviations from an optimal filling level, e.g. To achieve different resistance values, it was found that changes of 200 to 300% could occur under the same conditions.

In the production of a so-called logarithmic potentiometer, the resistance layer on the carrier 1 consists of a number of adjacent areas with different specific resistances, which are obtained by applying suspension mixtures of a suitable composition at the desired locations on the carrier 1.
