Description
The invention relates to novel silica gels and a novel method for producing these silica gels, which have properties which they have for use as cleaning, grinding and polishing agents, e.g. make them particularly suitable in toothpastes.
There is already extensive patent literature on the use of finely divided silicas as cleaning and polishing agents in toothpastes. Because of this state of the art, it has not yet become clear what characteristic values a silica must have in order to be suitable as a polishing agent. Both pyrogenic silicas and precipitated silicas and silicic acid gels have been recommended, which each have different average particle sizes and can have both a high and a low surface area.
DE-AS 16 17 927 recommends silica xerogels with a particle size of 2 to 20 μm and a surface area of at least 600 m2 / g. According to DE-OS 20 28 866, however, the surface should not be critical and can also be 300 to 500 m2 / g.
According to DE-OS 16 67 875, pyrogenic hydrophobic silicas are to be used, the primary particle size of which is only about 0.01 to 0.03 Jim. On the other hand, DE-OS 22 50 078 states that the particle size can also exceed 20 (in; silica xerogels with surfaces between 250 and 800 m2 / g are recommended there, the particle size of which is between 22 and 50, in particular 25 and 30 µm .
In DE-AS 24 46 038 the greatest weight is placed on the bulk density and it is shown that the abrasion capacity (determined as wire abrasion) also increases with increasing bulk density. However, it is not clear how the different bulk weights can be obtained. In the examples, the surface shows no correlation with the abrasive effect or with the bulk weight.
It follows from the above that a direct connection between the abrasion properties of silicas on the one hand and their other characteristics on the other hand has obviously not been found to date. Even the type of silica does not seem to be significant, that in addition to those of the gel type, wet-precipitated silicas and pyrogenic silicas have also been found to be suitable.
Within the class of silica gels, the suitability according to the state of the art is not limited to practically completely dehydrated silica gels, the so-called xerogels, e.g. DE-OS 27 04 504 shows which gels with a water content of 15 to 35% recommend and which have a particle size in the range from 2 to 30 [.mu.m. These water-containing gels show very good abrasion properties.
DE-OS 25 22 486 strives for silicas with a “low structure”, which is to be understood as meaning a low oil absorption and a high bulk density. Accordingly, the pore volumes of these silicas are relatively low and this property is considered essential for the desired abrasion properties.

Most should ensure a certain, relatively high degree of abrasiveness or cleaning ability and thus give the teeth the highest possible gloss. The agent should also give the toothpaste a favorable consistency, even when stored, be compatible with the other toothpaste components and should ultimately not lead to corrosion of the packaging material.
DE-OS 21 53 821). As the above discussion of the prior art shows, silica types have been found which essentially meet these requirements. In general, silica gels seem to produce a good polishing effect in toothpastes, as shown in DE-AS 1617 927 and DE-OS 20 28 866. Further advantages are that transparent dentifrices can be produced (see US Pat. Nos. 35 38 230, DE-OS 22 50 078 and 25 02 111) and that compatibility with fluorides, which dentifrices are added to prevent tooth decay, is good ( Vergi. DE-OS 21 53 821).
Although the cleaning effect or more precisely the abrasion effect has already been associated with the particle size and other structural data of the respective silicas, there is as yet no clear teaching of how the abrasion effect of a silica can be influenced. The consequence of this is that the silica present in each case has to be used in a very specific concentration in order to set a certain abrasiveness of the toothpaste. However, particularly high abrasion values cannot be achieved at all because the absorption capacity of the recipes for porous amorphous silicas is limited, since otherwise the pastes become too stiff or too dry. If the concentration of the silica is changed to set a different abrasiveness, a complete reformulation of the entire recipe is required at the same time: not only the consistency, but also the storage stability, the taste, the tolerance and the like have to be re-checked and adjusted, what is time consuming and cumbersome.
In addition, the particle size of the cleaning and polishing agents has a mean value of around 10 (im is already so large that it is felt organoleptically by the user. A significant change in the particle size or the concentration therefore leads to a strong shift in the mouthfeel, with the result that that the consumer thinks he has a completely different toothpaste in front of him, so it is practically impossible to vary a toothpaste that has already been launched on the market only in terms of its abrasiveness, without also changing the other objective or subjectively perceived properties.
For example, it is impossible to use a specific toothpaste formulation with graded abrasiveness values for different user groups, e.g. to offer young and old people. In itself, such a procedure would be extremely desirable because older people, for whom the tooth necks are often exposed unprotected from gums, need dentifrices with low abrasiveness.
The difficulties described above are particularly great because it has so far not been possible to produce polishing and cleaning agents based on synthetic silicas, which give high or very high abrasion values and are particularly suitable for use in dentifrices.
The primary object of the invention is to propose silica gels and methods for producing these silica gels, the dentin abrasion effect of which can be adjusted to certain values, practically irrespective of the particle size and within the usual range regardless of the application concentration in the toothpaste. In addition, the method according to the invention is also intended to produce silica with high abrasion values not previously achieved.
The problem is solved by a silica gel with an average particle size of 1 to 30 (j, m, which is characterized by the following combination of features:
a) eine spezifische Oberfläche von 1 bis 600 m2/g, a) a specific surface area of 1 to 600 m2 / g,
b) ein spezifisches Porenvolumen von 0,05 bis 0,5 cm3/g, b) a specific pore volume of 0.05 to 0.5 cm3 / g,
c) ein Produkt aus spezifischer Oberfläche in m2/g und spezifischen Porenvolumen in cm3/g ^240 und vorzugsweise 200, c) a product of specific surface area in m2 / g and specific pore volume in cm3 / g ^ 240 and preferably 200,
d) einen rechnerischen Porendurchmesser von 1,5 bis 2,5 nm und e) einen Wassergehalt von unter 25 Gew.%. d) a calculated pore diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 nm and e) a water content of less than 25% by weight.
The silica gel according to the invention is produced by a process by means of gelling aqueous silicate solutions and then washing, drying and grinding to the desired particle size, which is characterized in that the gelled silica gel at pH values below 6 and at temperatures from 0 to 70 ° C washes to a purity of 90 to 99.9% by weight SÌO2 (based on the loss on ignition loss) and then immediately dries to a water content of less than 25% by weight, the washing and drying conditions being adjusted so that aging is avoided so that the silica gel has a surface area of 1 to 600 mVg and a pore volume of 0.05 to 0.5 cm3 / g and a calculated pore diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 nm.
The silica gel according to the invention is for use as a cleaning, grinding and polishing agent, in particular in dentifrices.
According to Ullmann's Encyklopadie der Technischen Chemie, 3rd edition (1964), volume 15, page 719, various silica gels can be obtained by washing hydrogels at different pH values. A narrow-pore gel with a surface area of 600 to 800 m2 / g and a pore volume of 0.3 cm3 / g is distinguished from wide-pore silica gel with a surface area of 250 m2 / g and a pore volume of 0.9 cmVg. Medium-pore silica gels lie between. these values. Due to different pH values during washing and using different washing temperatures, a continuous spectrum of silica gels can be produced according to the state of the art, which has increasing surfaces with decreasing pore volume.
In contrast, the silica gels produced according to the invention have an approximately constant calculated pore diameter D = ^ - 103 = 1.5 to 2.5 nm, in particular 1.8 to 2.2 nm (PV = pore volume in cmVg; OF = surface area in m2 / g) and a product OF x PV ^ 240 are marked, not to the correlation series of the known silica gels, but they form a separate class. The pore volume also correlates with the BET surface area, but in the opposite way: as the BET surface area decreases, the pore volume also decreases. Furthermore, these results show that the specific surface alone is by no means sufficient for labeling silica gels, but that the pore volume must also be taken into account in order to clearly describe the silica gels obtainable according to the invention.
The silica gels are washed at a pH below 6, i.e. the pH of both the fresh and used washing water is below 6.
The silica gels are preferably at low pH values, in particular at values below 3, and at low temperatures of about 0 to 70 ° C., in particular 0 to s

Washed 60 ° C until a purity of 90 to 99.9 wt.% SÌO2, in particular 96 to 99.7 wt.% SÌO2 is reached. The impurities to be removed mainly consist of sodium sulfate. The fact that the silica gel develops from a fully dispersed silica sol, the colloid particles of which still have a very low molecular weight in the order of 6000 when gelled, temperature and washing speed play an important role in controlling further development. At a given pH, these parameters determine the time in which the low molecular weight silica condenses to higher molecular weights, which means that the Si02 gel structure reaches increasingly advanced stages in terms of the degree of polymerization, which (after drying) generally have a decreasing specific surface be recognized. In this sense, the process according to the invention is aimed at a particularly early stage of development since very "young" silica gels are to be produced. As a result, in addition to the low pH and an incompletely perfect purity, low treatment temperatures are required, and the total treatment time must not be extended too long. For example, a very long treatment time at 20 ° C can be equivalent to a much shorter treatment at 75 ° C, for example, with regard to the state of development of the silica gel.
Accordingly, the maximum treatment time at a very low pH and treatment temperature would be about 48 hours. Of course, much higher treatment times are required at higher pH values and / or higher treatment temperatures.
To achieve the required low product of specific surface area and pore volume of less than 240, it is therefore essential according to the invention to avoid aging when washing the silica hydrogel, which is possible by a corresponding lowering of the treatment temperature or a shortening of the treatment. PH values below 4, in particular below 3, are preferably used. Furthermore, pore volumes of less than 0.4 cm 3 / g are preferred.
For the silica gels according to the invention, the product of specific surface area, expressed in m2 / g, and specific pore volume, expressed in cmVg, is less than 240, preferably even less than 200.
Typical values are 108 (surface area of 450 m2 / g and pore volume of 0.24 cmVg) or 52 (surface area of 326 m2 / g, pore volume of 0.16 cm3 / g). The lower the value for the product, the greater the abrasiveness of the silica gel. The abrasion capacity also increases with the particle size.
According to the invention, the silica hydrogel is preferably washed semi-continuously in such a way that the wash water is renewed in each case after a corresponding standing time. Gas jet mills, in particular steam jet mills, are particularly suitable for grinding the silica gels. It is possible to combine the grinding with a partial or largely complete drying, as e.g. is described in more detail in DE-PS 10 36 220. The water content of the silica gels produced according to the invention is preferably below 25% by weight.
Drying to a water content of less than 25% by weight must take place as soon as possible. The maximum drying time is about 2 hours, while the preferred drying in gas jet mills and in particular steam jet mills takes only a few seconds. Slower drying, e.g. by using recirculated air or by storage at room temperature for more than 24 hours, which can also be defined as slow drying, does not lead to the silica gels according to the invention. As can be seen from the examples, suitable drying temperatures are, for example, 140 to 180 ° C. (inlet temperature of the hot air), but other temperatures, for example below 100 ° C., can also be used.
It is not yet possible to give a complete explanation of the processes involved in carrying out the method according to the invention. However, it is probable that with an increasingly younger developmental state of the silica gels, smaller and smaller surface values are determined, because the structure still consists of less cross-linked silica units and is easily deformable. The shrinkage stress that occurs during drying therefore has a particularly strong effect, so that the entire structure collapses and a considerable part of the specific surface originally present is lost. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the pore volume decreases with the younger state of development. From a certain development stage (degree of polycondensation and crosslinking), the gels apparently achieve such a stability that extreme shrinkage is no longer possible and no more dense structure is obtained.
The silica gels produced by means of the process according to the invention have a number of essential advantages:
1. The dentin abrasion effect of the cleaning and polishing agent for toothpastes can be set as desired in the areas of practical interest during the manufacture of the silica gels. Thus, when the agent according to the invention is used in an already existing, tried and tested recipe, the concentration of the friction agent and the particle size need not be changed. The dentin abrasion effect of the toothpaste was adjusted by selecting the appropriate RDA value, which in turn can be obtained through the corresponding process parameters.
2. If desired, the silica gels according to the invention have an unusually strong cleaning action as cleaning and polishing agents, as the RDA values in the range from 200 to 300 and above make clear. If desired, the concentration in the dentifrice can therefore be reduced.
In addition, transparent toothpastes with a much higher dentine abrasion effect can be produced than previously possible.
3. According to the invention, the silica gels can be produced without loss of abrasion with a certain residual water content of less than 25% by weight, which enables formulations with fewer solids, which experience has shown to be characterized by better aroma filling and faster aroma development.
4. Finally, toothpastes which are distinguished by very good storage stability and compatibility with fluorides can be produced with the silica gels according to the invention, which may also contain water.
As the following examples further demonstrate, using the method according to the invention, practically silica gels with predetermined abrasion values can be produced. For the use of dentifrices, it is particularly beneficial for the toothpaste manufacturer to use e.g. One silica gel each with a high and a low abrasion capacity with otherwise identical properties can be made available, so that it is capable of practically the desired abrasion value by appropriately combining only two silica gels from the series

einzustellen, ohne dass die sonstige Formulierung des Zahnpflegemittels geändert werden muss. discontinued without changing the other formulation of the dentifrice.
In order to achieve the desired consistency of the toothpaste, another silica gel with a small particle size can be added to the silica gel according to the invention, which has a good thickening effect, but practically no abrasion effect.
The invention will be explained in more detail below with the aid of examples.
J.J. Hefferren in J. Dental Research 55,563-73 (1976) und «Procedure for Dentifrice Analysis» der Missouri Ana- 15 lytical Laboratories, St. Louis, V.St.A.). The dentin abrasion is given in each case as an RDA value (radioactive io dentin abrasion), which was determined by means of the method described in DE-AS 20 28 866 at a reference standard of 100 for calcium pyrophosphate (compare JJ Hefferren in J. Dental Research 55,563-73 (1976) and “Procedure for Dentifrice Analysis” from Missouri Analytical Laboratories, St. Louis, V.St.A.). In the context of the present application, “surface” is always understood to mean the surface determined by the Brunauer, Emmet and Teller method (BET method), which is given in m2 / g. The “pore volumes” were determined using the 20 nitrogen method and are given in cm3 / g.
E.P. Barrett et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc, 73,373 (1951).] 2s This is the pore volume in the pore diameter range ^ 600 A according to the Kelvin equation, measured with nitrogen at 96.7% of the N2 saturation pressure [cf. E.P. Crushed samples of freshly gelled silica gel with an SiO: content of 18% by weight and an excess of sulfuric acid corresponding to a normality of 0.425 were immediately washed by changing the water at a temperature of 50-65 ° C until different pH values or until certain conductivity values are reached as a measure of the purity achieved. The silica gels were then immediately dried on a perforated grate by treatment with hot air from 140 to 180 ° C. to water contents below 3% by weight and finely ground in a baffle plate mill to average grain sizes around 14 μm (volume average), measured with the Coulter counter. The properties of the gels obtained, such as pH, pore volume, surface, etc., were determined before comminution.
The data of the silica gels obtained are summarized in Table 1.

While only RDA values of 145-166 were achieved in comparison tests 1 to 3, the process according to the invention provides products with high RDA values. up to 275.
It can be seen that the RDA values increase inversely in proportion to the product from the surface and the pore volume.

In a further series of experiments, silica gels were washed in the same way by changing the water in rapid succession to different purities or, at low pH values, to different conductivities, but the subsequent comminution was carried out in a steam jet mill. Here, the silica gel was partially fed to the mill in the form of hydrogel with a water content of over 60%, so that the drying of the corresponding samples took place simultaneously with the grinding. However, some of the samples were also first dried to xerogel according to Example 1, but then also micronized in a steam jet mill. In the entire test series, a grain size of 4 am, measured with the Coulter Counter, was aimed for. The water contents of the micronizates finally obtained were between 7.1 and 24.8% by weight. Both the case occurred that a Xerogel 25 absorbed moisture again during steam jet milling, so that the water content subsequently amounted to 13.8% by weight, and that a hydrogel was not completely dried, so that the end product still had a water content of 21.6 and 24.8% by weight. The RDA values of all 30 samples were measured. The data obtained from the samples are summarized in Table 2.

This example also shows that the RDA values increase in inverse proportion to the product from the surface and the pore volume, i.e. that the denatural abrasion effect is controlled by this property of the gel. Examples 1 and 2 also make it clear that very high RDA values (275,316,363) can be obtained, which was not to be expected from the prior art. Furthermore, both examples show that the particle size has a considerable influence on the dentin abrasion effect, as can be seen from the comparison of the values between Example 1 and Example 2. In particular, it is shown in Example 2 that at least for the silica gels according to the invention with a low product of surface and pore volume, considerable values for the dentin abrasion are still obtained, even if the mean particle size takes on values as low as 2.3 µm. According to the state of the art, such a pronounced dentin abrasion effect was not to be expected for such a small particle size, since dehydrated
sierte Siliciumdioxide mit einem Teilchenspektrum von 2-20 (xm empfohlen werden. silicon dioxide with a particle spectrum of 2-20 (xm are recommended.
The fact that the micronized silica gels of Example 2 have noticeable and sometimes considerable water contents obviously does not impair the dentin abrasion effect. Finally, it is very surprising that in both examples it is precisely those cleaning and polishing agents which have the lowest RDA values and which have the lowest surface area.
io Beispiel 3 Example 3
Following the procedure of Example 1, silica hydrogels were produced, but only half of each of the samples was dried immediately after washing, while the other half was covered for 6 or 7 days at room temperature. Only after this storage were these samples dried in the same way. The data obtained are summarized in Table 3 below.

The sample 17 dried after storage belongs to the class of known silica gels according to the prior art, while the silica gel 16 according to the invention was formed without aging. It is particularly interesting that the aging of the young hydrogel actually creates a higher specific surface, corresponding to the transition from one class to the other. According to the general experience with silica gels according to the prior art, higher specific surfaces change to lower ones if correspondingly effective treatments are intensified or prolonged.
Trotz der unverzüglich vorgenommenen Trocknung wurde die Entstehung eines erfindungsgemässen Finally, it is known that drying in a higher water vapor-saturated atmosphere leads to less shrinkage of the silica gels.
