The invention relates to a method and a device for checking the authenticity of coins of a certain size based on their weight.
In vending machines or service machines, various parameters are measured on inserted coins in order to be able to distinguish false certificates from good coins and either reject them by returning them or accept them as good. The probably most used parameter is a weight control in a purely mechanical way. The coin to be checked is usually brought into a weighing position on a slideway, and a decision is made between good or bad depending on the response of the weighing device. To do this, the movement of the coins on their way to the checkout must be stopped during weighing. Such devices therefore work slowly and are complex, since it must be additionally ensured that a second coin cannot be inserted again until the first one has been processed.
An electrical signal that can be used directly for the further control process is also not delivered directly.
The invention has for its object to provide a method and to provide a device with which a coin control can be implemented faster and with less effort.
The invention is characterized in claim 1.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the single drawing, in which a device according to the invention is shown in a simplified manner.
In the drawing, 1 means a career path along which a coin 2, the term coin also being intended to include any token, is accelerated under the action of a force P. In the present example, the track 1 is an inclined plane on which the coin 2 slides down, the force P accelerating the coin being a component of the weight G of the coin 2. A baffle plate 4 is located at a distance S from a lower end 3 of the track 1, the center of which lies approximately in the extension of the straight line a shown in dashed lines through the center of gravity of the coin 2 as it slides along the track 1. Immediately in front of the baffle plate 4, two light barriers 5 and 6 are arranged at a distance b from one another. Their light rays intersect the straight line a and are approximately perpendicular to the image surfaces of the coin 2.
A light-emitting diode and a phototransistor can each serve as a light barrier.
The coin 2 arrives directly from an input slot (not shown) or from an upstream coin selector, in the case of a single-slot machine with only one input slot for all coin types, into the position shown in the figure, from which it is accelerated. The coin 2 can also e.g. be stopped for the time being by an electromechanical device in order to always have the same starting situation for the subsequent acceleration of the coin.
The coin 2 accelerated along the track 1 flies through the route S in the present example in free flight and successively covers the light barriers 5 and 6, as a result of which the speed V of the coin is determined
can, and hits on the baffle 4. There the coin bounces off and is deflected into a collecting channel (not shown) under the effect of gravity. When the coin 2 impacts the baffle plate 4, the following applies according to the impulse set: P t = m v, where P is the force exerted by the coin during the time t, m is the mass of the coin and v is its final speed. The latter can be set to the speed V which can be determined by the light barriers 5 and 6.
It is found that the product m v is proportional to the integral of a force Pl acting between the coin 2 and the baffle plate 4, integrated over its duration of action to to tl, according to the relationship
EMI2.1
This gives the mass m of the coin
EMI2.2
where to and tl mean the times between which the force Pl is non-zero. A piezo crystal 7 is used to record the time profile of the force P1 and to convert it into a proportional electrical quantity, it being advantageous if the force transmission to the piezo crystal 7 takes place via at least one shock absorber 8.
In the exemplary embodiment, the piezo crystal 7 is mounted between two shock absorbers 8 and 9, of which the second shock absorber 9 is supported against a fixed base 10. Instead of a piezo crystal, a strain gauge could also be used with the appropriate arrangement.
So that the piezo crystal 7 can work in its linear forming area, it is expedient if it is preloaded by a continuously acting force. For this purpose, the piezo crystal 7 is biased between its two shock absorbers 8, 9 via a first arm 11 of a two-armed lever 12 by a spring 14 acting on a second arm 13 of the lever 12. The spring 14 is also supported against the base 10. The lever 12 is pivotally mounted on an axis 15 parallel to the base 10. The baffle plate 4 is arranged on the first arm 11 such that the piezo crystal 7 with its shock absorbers 8, 9 and the baffle plate 4 lie in an axis a which is approximately identical to the trajectory of the center of gravity of the coin.
A measuring process takes place in such a way that the speed V is electronically calculated from the time difference in the interruption of the light beam of the light barriers 5 and 6 and taking into account the distance b and the force P1 is converted by the piezo crystal 7 into a voltage U proportional to the force P1. This voltage can be a pure electromotive force or a voltage change in a circuit. The best sensitivity for the force-voltage conversion arises when the baffle plate 4 and the shock absorbers 8 and 9 are made of an elastic material. The resulting damping of the shock pulse, as well as the non-ideal elasticity of the shock absorbers, causes a signal that is largely free of unwanted harmonics and other interference.
The mass m is determined according to what has been described in that the force Pl acting on the baffle plate 4 during the period to to tl is first converted into an electrical variable U proportional to the course of the force P1 and the course thereof is determined between the times to and tl whereupon the mass m according to the relationship
EMI2.3
results. In this, K means a constant given both by the device and by the conversion into the electrical variable U. The evaluation is preferably carried out by a programmed computer. Based on specified limit values for m, the latter also decides whether the coins are to be accepted or rejected.
This decision can be used to control a flap at the end of the path traversed by the rebounding coin 2 and to actuate the flap there before the coin arrives.
Because in the described method the coins for the measuring process do not have to be brought to a standstill during a weighing time, a very short processing time is achieved, which allows different coins to be inserted one after the other. This enables the construction of coin validators with little effort, high processing speed and still high decision-making reliability.
Compared to acceleration in free fall, acceleration along a career path offers more constructive freedom in terms of spatial arrangement, since the acceleration route does not have to be arranged in a vertical line inside the vending machine. Instead of gravity, a certain, always the same force in the manner of a catapult could also be used.
