The subject of the present invention is a shock absorber for a mechanized handling device, comprising a fixed body, a stop movable relative to the body, intended to be driven by a mobile element of the device at the end of its travel, and a piston secured to the stop, able to slide in the body by discharging a fluid through an orifice.
With the development of automated manufacturing methods, more and more people are using handling devices in industrial branches dedicated to mass production, which are added to certain machine tools or to certain machining and assembly devices in order to bring into a working position semi-manufactured products, such as for example metal strips, or parts which must undergo successive operations of manufacture or assembly. However, in many cases, these handling devices comprise either one or more arms, generally provided with a clamp at their end, and which describe pivoting movements between two predetermined limit positions or else one or more carriages carrying out movements of back and forth on rails or behind the scenes.
All these movements must be strictly delimited by predetermined end positions. By way of example, Swiss Patent No. 612611 describes a handling device with a transporting arm, the arm of which performs rotational movements of 1800 around an axis, these movements being limited by two stops.
In order to avoid rebounding of the arm at the end of
its course, the device of the aforementioned patent, as well as
many other devices of the same kind are equipped
shock absorbers and in particular pneuma type shock absorbers
tick or hydraulic. Thus, the shock absorbers described in the
aforementioned patent comprise a rod integral with a piston and
which, under the impact of the transport arm, sinks into a
cylinder and expels air from the cylinder through
an orifice of restricted section.
The present invention specifically relates to a shock absorber for use in a device which could be of the same kind as that of the aforementioned Swiss patent. The object of this invention is to improve the production of these already known shock absorbers in order to safely avoid any rebound of the transport arm at the end of the stroke. Depreciation is obtained without requiring a delicate and tedious adjustment when the device is put into service.
For this purpose, the damper according to the invention is characterized by a pin linked to the stop, movable with it and engaging in said orifice so as to restrict the flow of fluid, said pin having a shoulder which, at the end of stroke, tends to close off said orifice.
An embodiment of the shock absorber according to the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the attached drawing, in which:
fig. 1 is a sectional view of the body of the shock absorber equipped with the limiting stop, and FIG. 2 is a schematic view, on a smaller scale, illustrating a mode of use of the damper.
The main part of the shock absorber is the body 1 which is a hollow cylindrical part, one end of which is provided with a guide orifice 2 fitted with a ring 3 while the other end is closed by a threaded cover 4 in which is housed a connection end piece (not shown). The inner part of the body 1 forms a cylinder limited by a cylindrical internal face 5 and in which is housed a calibrated ring 6. This ring is located at the end facing the cover 4. It has a central cylindrical passage, also calibrated and designated by 7. On the inside of the cylinder, the ring 6 is limited by a flat face 8.
The ring 3 serves as a guide element to a stop 9 of cylindrical shape which passes through this ring and which is capable of moving axially under the effect of the impact of a transport arm or a carriage (not shown) coming into contact with the outer end of this stop. At its inner end, the stop 9 has an enlargement which forms a piston 12 limited by two circular flanges 10 and 1 1 extending at a certain distance from each other. Between the flanges 10 and It is mounted a piston lining 25 made of an elastically deformable material, such as for example, rubber or a synthetic material, this lining ensuring the sealing of the piston.
Preferably, this piston lining has, on the inside of the cylinder, a concave curved face in order to facilitate the discharge of the oil towards the discharge orifice 7.
The essential part of the shock absorber described consists of a sliding pin 13. This metal part, machined with all the required precision, is linked to the stop 9. By one of its ends, of cylindrical shape, it is engaged in a housing cylindrical, 14 which extends in the stop 9 over its entire length. This cylindrical end is adjusted to the housing 14 so that it can slide in this housing. A spring 15, for example a coil spring, is housed between the bottom of the housing 14 and the end of the pin 13.
Experience shows that a very weak spring is enough to
that the shock absorber is working properly as we will see later. Normally, a shoulder 16 which limits the guide range of the pin 13 presses against a ring 17 driven out at the entrance to the housing 14 in the stop 9.
The part of the pin 13 which extends outside the stop 9 comprises first of all, from its end turned towards the ring 6, a frustoconical point 18. This frustoconical point follows a cylindrical element 19, then a flange 20. The cylindrical element 19 has a diameter which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the cylindrical passage 7. As for the outside diameter of the flange 20, it is however considerably larger than that of the passage 7.
The shoulder 21 which limits the flange 20 on the side of the orifice 7 is a flat shoulder. If necessary, one could provide in the shoulder 21 or in the surface 8, a groove intended to increase the section offered to the fluid for its evacuation from the cylinder at the end of the stroke of the stop.
As regards the angle of the frustoconical tip 18, the value of this angle is not critical.
The operation of the shock absorber described is as follows: starting from an initial position such as that which is shown in FIG. 1 where the stop 9 extends projecting outside the body 1, it is assumed that a transport arm or a carriage strikes the end of this stop and moves it to the left in FIG. 1. The fluid contained inside the cylinder 5 is therefore driven back through the passage 7 by the displacement of the piston lining 25. However, from the moment when the frustoconical tip 18 engages in the passage 7, the fluid flow is slightly restricted so that a progressive resistance force is manifested on the piston and is transmitted by the stop 9 to the conveyor arm. This resistance force increases as the frustoconical part 18 and then the cylindrical surface 19 penetrate the passage 7.
When this shoulder is in the immediate vicinity of the surface 8, the flow of fluid is greatly restricted so that the movement of the stop 9 is very slow. The movable stop 9 then moves at very slow speed until the movement of the arm is stopped by the fixed stop.
The shock absorber described can be used under different conditions and fig. 2 shows one of these possibilities of use. Here, two shock absorbers 22 and 23 are connected by a conduit 24 which communicates between them the passage 7 of the two shock absorbers. It will be understood that this arrangement makes it possible to determine two twin stop positions for any conveyor arm or any pivoting device. When the stop 9 of the shock absorber 23 is in the depressed position, the stop of the other shock absorber is returned to the starting position by transmission of the fluid through the conduit 24 while the displacement of the fluid in the other direction due to the pressing the other stop makes it possible to carry out the reverse movement when the mobile device which is to be limited is at the other end of its travel.
However, provision can also be made for the use of the shock absorber in conditions other than those of twinning. The connection piece of the body 1 could for example be connected to a reservoir or any source of compressed air so that the stop automatically returns to its starting position under the effect of air pressure after the mobile device has reached the end of its run.
In yet another use, the connection end piece could be connected to an elastic envelope itself containing a certain quantity of the fluid which fills the cylinder 5. By discharging this fluid through the conduit 7, the piston 12 causes the swelling, and consequently the tensioning of the inflatable envelope which, by contracting, possibly aided by a spring, will then cause the stop to return to its initial position.
Finally, one could also fix, in line with cylinder 1, a second cylinder with a piston biased by a spring. The oil passing through the passage 7 would push the piston against the action of the spring which would be adjustable and would then cause the movable stop to return to its initial position.
