Description
The invention relates to a method for processing a body fluid sample for diagnostic testing. Body fluids in connection with the invention include e.g. Urine, ascites and pleurisy in question.
For many diseases, it is important for successful therapy to determine the condition of the disease and to give a specific diagnosis at the earliest possible stage. This is the case, for example, with tumor diseases such as cancer. The chances of a cancer patient's survival largely depend on how far the cancerous tumor has spread at the time of diagnosis.
The diagnosis of tumor diseases can be made by microscopic examination of the appearance and stainability of the body cells, i.e. with cytological methods, which is carried out daily in hospitals by medical personnel trained for such tests. Samples for cytological examination can be provided from the body tissue by means of pen punctures or by scraping a cell sample from the mucous membrane. The sample is then treated with a fixative that interrupts the metabolism of the cells and preserves their appearance and stainability. In this way, a small and permanent preparation is made, which can be mailed to a laboratory for cytological examination. In this way, for example, it is possible to detect abdominal cancer at an early stage.
Urine specimen examinations are currently carried out in hospitals in which cytologists are present and in which the test can be carried out relatively shortly after the specimen is taken. Cells in urine samples are quickly destroyed by putrefaction, which makes proper microscopic examination impossible after a few hours.
There is a strong need to collect body fluid samples, especially urine samples, for cytological examination even in hospitals where cytologists are absent. However, a large amount of liquid is required for such a sample, which is disadvantageous for sending the sample by post to the laboratory in question. Since the sample must also be fixed in order to prevent the cells from being destroyed by what
If a fixative is added, the amount of liquid increases even further.
To reduce the volume of fluid, it would be desirable to produce a urine sample concentrate with a high percentage of the body's cells. So far, however, there is no simple and reliable method and no device of this type for these purposes.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned above and in particular to propose a method and a corresponding device which are simple and reliable for the medical personnel.
This object is achieved according to the invention with the measures of the characterizing part of claim 1.
The invention accordingly relates to a device for executing the aforementioned method. This device is characterized by the features of claim 2.
Es zeigen: Further features, advantages and possible applications result from the following description of exemplary embodiments with reference to the attached drawing. Show it:

The device according to FIGS. 1 and 2 has a tubular or tubular container 1, which is preferably made of flexible plastic material. The container 1 is equipped at its upper end with collapsible filling funnels 2. At the lower end there is a label 3 for identifying the sample. The bottom section 1 a of the container 1 contains a fixing agent and is separated by means of a releasable clip 4. The fixative can contain alcohol and acetic acid and have a volume of about 5 ml.

When using the device, about 200 ml of urine are poured into the upper section 1b of the container 1. Then the device is suspended in a vertical position on a hook or the like (not shown). For this purpose, an opening 2a is provided on the funnel section 2. The position of the liquid surface in the container 1 is indicated by 5. The sample is then allowed to sediment. The body cells sink to the bottom of the upper section 1b of the container 1. If the container 1 has a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 400 mm, for example, a sedimentation time of 15 to 30 minutes is sufficient to obtain a sufficient cell concentrate .
After the sedimentation time, a further clamp 4, which is shown in broken lines in FIG. 1, is attached in a position 55 above the first hammer 4. A mark 6 is provided on the container 1 for the position of the second clamp. In this way, a urine sample with a volume of about 5 ml and a high concentration of body cells is separated and enclosed between the two clamps 4. 60 The portion of the urine sample that is above the second bracket is poured out of container 1. The upper part of the upper section, which is now empty, is subsequently cut off and discarded.
The lower bracket 4 is then removed from the container 1-65. The concentrated urine sample is thus brought into contact with the fixing agent in the lower container section 1 a and mixed with it. The cells in the urine sample are fixed in this way and their metabolism is

The removed clip can, if necessary, be used to close the free cut end of the container 1 as an additional safety measure for sealing, as illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4.
The clip shown in Fig. 5 is preferably made of plastic material and has two arms 7 and 8 which are hinged together at one end and have a locking mechanism at the other end. An arm 7 is provided with an element 9 made of elastic rubber in order to present an effective closure in the closed position.
The label 3 on the container 1 is provided with the name or other information about the patient or other additional information for the unique identification of the sample.
The sample, which was processed in the manner described above according to the invention, has all the desired advantages, such as high concentration of body cells, good resistance, low volume and low weight. Such a sample can therefore be easily mailed to a cytological laboratory for verification. For this purpose the sample is enclosed in a suitable liquid-tight envelope.
