During laboratory work, for example during organic synthesis, it is often necessary to add a precise quantity of a solid substance to the reaction medium at a determined speed. This is done manually. The disadvantages of this manipulation are obvious: poor reproducibility, loss of time, risk for the experimenter during dangerous reactions or when working with toxic products. Sometimes you can dissolve the substance in a solvent and add the solution using a pump or otherwise. However, the dissolution of the substance necessarily produces its dilution and therefore the decrease in its activity as well as the increase in the final volume of the mixture.
In certain cases the use of the solvent is completely excluded.
According to the authors' knowledge, there is currently no device allowing a controlled dosage of solid substances automatically and with a possibility of varying the flow rate within wide limits, having the dimensions and the properties which allow its use in the laboratory. This is why our invention provides an original and new solution to the problems mentioned above.
The main advantages of the device presented here are: the reduced number of parts, the easy assembly and disassembly of the device, the ease of cleaning of all the necessary parts, the compact and robust construction, the tightness of the device and the possibility of remote control. The device can be used for work at pressure above or below atmospheric pressure or for a controlled atmosphere. The dispenser can be washed with a stream of gas, which eliminates the deposition of the substance to be dispensed at the outlet of the dispenser even when working under reflux. The dispenser in the preferred construction is shown in the accompanying drawing.
The dispenser consists of six easily removable parts.
The body of the dispenser A is a glass tube fitted with a net at each end. The lower part of the dispenser is formed by a cap B which secures the washer C and the connecting piece D to the receiving container. Part D is fitted with a lapping. When the washer C is made of PTFE or other partially resilient material, another seal is superfluous. The distributor E is guided by the body of the dispenser A, in which it rotates freely. The conical part has an opening F through which the material to be dosed is deposited on the washer C. The pallet G ensures the controlled flow of the substance, through the central orifice of the washer C, towards the receiving container. The conical shape of the dispenser E ensures the quantitative discharge of the substance to be dosed.
The upper part contains the motor M and the speed reducer R screwed to the housing H. The axis of the reducer is provided with a tube I which allows coupling with the axis of the distributor E. The spring J placed in the tube I ensures constant pressure of the distributor against the washer C. The part K also screwed to the housing H allows the motor unit to be fixed to the body of the metering device by means of the cap B which rotates freely on the part K. The seal L makes the waterproof system.
The tubular axis of the dispenser allows the pressure to be equalized between the interior of the metering device and the receiving container, as well as the rinsing of the part D with a suitable gas. The latter enters the metering device via the N tube. This is particularly important to prevent condensation of the vapors in the metering device when working with solvents under reflux.
All parts of the dispenser can be made of any suitable material. Particularly advantageous is the use of parts manufactured and marketed for other uses (tubes with a glass net, caps, motor, etc.).
The motor (synchronous, asynchronous, direct current, step by step to the other) is controlled remotely by a suitable electronic unit.
