Description
The present invention aims to produce a slotted nipple of the type indicated above, the feed rate of which is, at least in the minimum flow position, substantially constant or not very variable depending on the amount of suction. According to the invention, the feed slot, instead of being formed on a convex curved surface, substantially spherical, as is the case with slot nipples of the prior art, is provided inside of a concavity arranged on the end of the teat. Comparative tests, which are described in detail below, show in particular that in the position of minimum flow, the flow remains stable for the teat with concavity according to the invention, while it increases rapidly in the case of a Classic type teat when increasing the suction depression.
The present invention therefore relates to a teat with variable and adjustable flow rate, intended in particular to adapt to a feeding bottle for infants, the teat having a nipple subjected to the sucking movement of the infant, nipple on the end of which is formed, as a flow orifice, at least one slit, straight or not, the position of the slit relative to the lips of the infant being indicated by means of at least one marker, characterized in that the slit is formed on a substantially flat surface or on a concave curved surface, the slot being in this case disposed in the bottom of the concavity.
In a preferred embodiment, the concave curved surface is of revolution about an axis which is substantially coincident with that of the teat; the slot is symmetrical with respect to the axis of the teat; if we cut the concave curved surface by an axial plane passing through the mean line of the feed slot and if we designate by a the angle formed between, on the one hand the tangent to the section at the one of the ends of the slot and, on the other hand, the axis of the teat, there is the following relation: 45 ° <"<90 °; the cord which underlies the arc of intersection of the curved surface concave with an axial plane has a length at least twice greater than the distance between the middle of the cord and the middle of the arc; the concave curved surface is preferably a spherical cap, the arc of intersection with an axial plane of which corresponds to an angle at the center less than 180 °; the nipple is provided with three marks oriented relative to the slot; holes are made at both ends of the slot, these holes having a substantially circular section; the slot has a length of between about 2 and 6 mm and the end holes a diameter of between about 0.10 and 1 mm.
In order to obtain a stable flow, whatever the amount of suction exerted by the infant, at least in the so-called minimum flow position (when the infant's lips are parallel to the slit), it is necessary that the slit is disposed on a non-convex surface and, preferably, inside a concavity, even if the latter has a relatively large radius of curvature. The maximum section of this surface measured in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the teat can only vary slightly between two limits: indeed, its upper limit is formed by the diameter of the nipple and its lower limit is formed by the length of slot.

On the other hand, if it is a concave surface, the depth of the concavity may be greater or less. However, it is preferred that the concavity be shallow, on the one hand, for obvious questions of ease of cleaning and, on the other hand, because of the relatively unsatisfactory results obtained with a teat with a deep concave surface in positions other than that of minimum flow, with regard to the stability of the supply flow as a function of the suction vacuum.
Sur ce dessin: To better understand the object of the present invention, there will be described below, by way of purely illustrative and nonlimiting example, an embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing. On this drawing:
— la fig. 1 représente, partiellement en coupe axiale, une tétine selon l'invention; - fig. 1 shows, partially in axial section, a teat according to the invention;
— la fig. 2 représente à une plus grande échelle, en coupe axiale, l'extrémité de la tétine où est ménagée la fente d'alimentation; - fig. 2 shows on a larger scale, in axial section, the end of the nipple where the feed slot is formed;
— la fig. 3 est une vue de dessus de la tétine de la fig. 1 ; - fig. 3 is a top view of the pacifier of FIG. 1;
- fig. 4 shows curves of variation of the flow rate as a function of the suction vacuum for the teat according to the invention and for a teat with slit of conventional type.
Referring to the attached drawing, it can be seen that a teat according to the invention has been designated by 1 as a whole, made of flexible rubber. The nipple 1 conventionally comprises a nipple 2, which is subjected to the sucking movements of the child. On the free end of the nipple 2 is formed a straight slot 3 extending in an axial plane of the nipple 1. At each end of the slot 3 is provided a circular hole 4a, 4b whose diameter is approximately 0 , 5 mm. The centers of the two end holes are 3 mm apart.
On the lower edge of the teat body are conventionally arranged three pins 5a, 5b and 5c; the mark 5a is arranged in the mediating plane of the slot 3; the mark 5c is in the axial plane of the nipple which contains the slot 3 and the mark 5b is arranged in an axial plane of the nipple, which makes an angle of 45 ° with the axial plane which contains the slot 3.
If we present, in a known manner, the mark 5a under the nose of the infant who is going to use the pacifier, the lips of the latter are arranged parallel to the slit 3; the latter can only open slightly, so that a minimum flow is obtained; if, on the other hand, the mark 5c is placed under the infant's nose by rotation of the bottle around its axis, the lips of the latter are then perpendicular to the slot 3, which can be opened to the maximum, so that one obtains the maximum teat flow rate; if the teat is positioned using the mark 5b, the slot 3 may open moderately and the feed rate of the child will therefore be intermediate between the two previous maximum and minimum rates.
Si l'on coupe To allow, in the minimum flow position, obtaining a flow rate which does not vary or very little depending on the suction, provision has been made, according to the invention, to house the supply slot 3 inside. a concavity 6 formed on the free end of the nipple 2 of the teat. The axis of the concavity 6 has been designated by 7. The axis 7 is substantially coincident with that of the teat. The concavity 6 is, in this embodiment, in the form of a spherical cap, the radius of which is 3.6 mm; the diameter of the circular rim 8 of the spherical cap is 5 mm. If we cut

la calotte sphérique par un plan passant par l'axe 7, l'arc de cercle d'intersection correspond à un angle au centre d'environ 90°. the spherical cap by a plane passing through the axis 7, the arc of circle of intersection corresponds to an angle at the center of approximately 90 °.
Of course, it is not essential that the concavity 6, where the slot 3 is formed, is spherical; it is also possible to provide other concave curved surfaces, for example ovoid, ellipsoidal, etc. It is preferred, for these concave curved surfaces, that the angle represented in FIG. 2 is between 45 and 90 °. The angle a is the angle which is formed when the concave curved surface is cut by an axial plane passing through the mean line of the slot 3 by the tangent 9 led to one of the ends of the slot and by l axis 7. When the angle a is close to 90 °, this means that the concave curved surface has a very large radius of curvature or, in other words, that this surface is practically planar. For a value of the angle a less than 45 °, a supply flow is obtained which varies little or practically not as a function of the suction depression in the position of minimum flow of the nipple but which, on the other hand, gives unsatisfactory flow control in the other two positions.
It is also preferred that the length of the cord 10 which underlies the arc of intersection of the concave curved surface with an axial plane (see fig. 2) is at least twice the distance 11 measured between the middle of chord 10 and the middle of the aforementioned intersection arc. In the case of a spherical curved surface, this limit is reached for a hemispherical cap, the depth 11 of which is equal to the radius of the cap.
D'après ces courbes, on constate que: The teat 1, which has just been described, is subjected to comparative tests with a teat which is similar in all respects, but does not have a concavity. These two teats are studied in position 1 of minimum flow, when the child's lips are arranged parallel to the slit, and in position 3 of maximum flow, when the child's lips are arranged perpendicular to the slit. The variation in water flow rate as a function of the suction vacuum is measured using appropriate equipment. There is shown in FIG. 4 the flow variation curves as a function of the vacuum: The suction vacuum expressed in millimeters of water is plotted on the abscissa and the air flow expressed in cubic centimeters per minute on the ordinate. The curves Ai and A3 are those obtained with the teat 1 according to the invention, when it is respectively put in position 1 or in position 3, and the curves $ 1! and B3 are those obtained by putting the teat with a slot of the prior art without concavity in positions 1 and 3 respectively. From these curves, it can be seen that:
— en position 1 de débit minimal, quand la dépression croît, le débit augmente franchement pour la tétine de l'art antérieur et reste nettement plus stable pour la tétine 1 selon l'invention; - In position 1 of minimum flow, when the depression increases, the flow increases frankly for the teat of the prior art and remains clearly more stable for the teat 1 according to the invention;
- in position 3 of maximum flow rate, the flow rate increases with the depression for the slotted teat of the prior art, whereas, for teat 1 according to the invention, it also increases, but then stabilizes for high values of suction depression. Thus, in position 1, the flow rate delivered by the nipple according to the invention is practically independent of the suction depression and, in position 3, an improvement is also obtained compared to the nipple of the prior art since, for high values of the suction depression, the flow stabilizes, while, for the slotted teat of the prior art, it continues to grow.
