8. A sleeve according to claim 7, characterized in that the rigid foam plastic located in its interior has substantially closed pores.
The invention relates to a method according to the preamble of claim 1.
When producing long electrical lines from insulated cables, it is often necessary to connect cables, or more precisely their conductors, to one another. In the case of cables which are used to transmit relatively large currents or voltages and which are laid, for example, in the floor or in a shaft, it is customary to attach a sleeve made of electrically insulating, waterproof material to the connection points. Such sleeves are often made at the location where the connection is made.
From the Swiss patent No. 405459 a method for the production of sleeves is known, in which the connection is enclosed with two shell parts, which may consist of PVC. The shell formed from the two shell parts is then filled with an epoxy casting resin. The shell then remains on the electrical connection, so that it forms the hard, waterproof outer wall of the sleeve.
However, this known method has the disadvantage that it is relatively expensive.
The present invention has now set itself the task of creating a sleeve surrounding the connection point of the conductors of at least two cables, which can be produced at the place of use and causes only low costs.
This object is achieved by a method of the type mentioned in the introduction, which is characterized according to claim 1
By means of the method according to the invention, a one-piece sleeve which surrounds the connection point of the conductors of at least two cables and which consists entirely of a uniform rigid foam material can be produced. The outer boundary of the sleeve is formed by the essentially non-porous crust. This can have a strength and tightness that is comparable to a non-porous thermoset.Unlike the method previously known from Swiss Patent No. 405 459, it is therefore not necessary that To provide the sleeve with a shell which is made of a different material than the mass contained therein.
In the method according to the invention, the shell parts forming the casting mold are separated from the sleeve after the foam has hardened, so that they can be used again for the production of a new sleeve. The method according to the invention therefore enables a considerable reduction in manufacturing costs.
The invention further relates to a sleeve produced by the method. This is characterized according to claim 7
The invention will now be explained with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawing. In the drawing: FIG. 1 shows a longitudinal section through two interconnected, single-pole cables and a casting mold enclosing the connection point and a sleeve cast into it, and FIG. 2 shows a section along the line II-II of FIG. 1 .
1 and 2 show two single-core cables 1 with a conductor 1 a formed by strands and a flexible insulation jacket 1 b made of plastic. The two cables 1 are conductively connected to one another by means of a terminal 2. The clamp 2 can be a metallic sleeve which encloses the ends of the cables and which has been provided with dents after the cables have been inserted. The connection of the two cables 1, that is to say the clamp 1 and the cable sections adjoining them enclosed in a sleeve 3 made of electrically insulating material.
The sleeve 3 consists of a coherent rigid foam plastic body. The core 3a, which forms the largest part of the sleeve, consists of the actual rigid foam plastic and has essentially tightly closed pores in which propellant gas is contained. The outer boundary of the sleeve 3 is formed by a hard, dense crust 3b, which consists of the same material as the core 3a, but is essentially non-porous. The crust 3b enclosing the core 3a, apart from the exit points of the cables, has a thickness of at least 0.5 mm everywhere. Their average thickness is preferably at least 1 mm. An essentially non-porous crust 3c is also present between the core 3a and the two cables 1 and the terminal 2.
The manufacture of the sleeve 3 will be explained below.
First, the two cables 1 are stripped at their ends and connected to one another by means of the terminal 2. A casting mold 4 is then formed, which delimits a cavity surrounding the connection point. The casting mold consists of two shell-shaped parts 5 and 6 made of plastic. The two parts 5, 6 point where they rest on each other, Zap
fen 5a, 6a, which engage in complementary holes in the other shell part. The pins and holes are dimensioned such that the two parts 5, 6 hold each other sufficiently detachably when foaming. The upper part 6 is also provided in the middle with a nozzle 6b which forms the pouring opening. The inner surfaces of the two parts 5, 6 are essentially semicircular in cross section. The part 6, however, is provided with two bulges 6c running along its longitudinal center plane and rising slightly towards the nozzle 6b.
These serve as a ventilation duct for the air when foaming.
The finished sleeve has ribs complementary to the bulges 6c. Furthermore, there may be separate ventilation openings, not shown.
If the two parts 5 and 6 are arranged in the manner described, a mixture serving as a casting compound is mixed from at least two components intended to form a rigid foam plastic and then poured into the casting mold 4. The components can be those which release a propellant after mixing and form a rigid polyurethane foam.
The amount of the poured-in mixture is measured in such a way that it takes up a volume in the case of free foaming that would be greater than the volume of the free cavity of the casting mold. The amount of the mixture is measured, for example, in such a way that the volume resulting from free foaming is at least 10% larger than the volume of the free cavity. When foaming, the foam rises from the bottom up. The air present in the casting mold 4 is pressed outwards through the nozzle 6b. The shell part 6 is now provided with a slide 7, which forms a closure member. Before the foaming process has ended, namely when the foam has risen to the lower end of the nozzle 6b, the opening of the nozzle can be closed by means of the slide 7.
The latter is designed in such a way that it prevents the foam from rising further, but allows the air still in the mold and any propellant gas present outside the foam to escape to the outside. Since a quantity of the mixture is poured in, which could produce a foam with a volume which is larger than that of the casting mold, an overpressure arises during the foaming, which presses the foam everywhere onto the casting mold. This creates the crusts 3b, 3c, which everywhere have thickness and stability mentioned earlier. The crusts 3b, 3c are otherwise dense and the pores formed in the core 3a are essentially closed and gas-tight, so that the propellant gas remains enclosed in them.
When the rigid foam plastic has hardened sufficiently, the parts forming the mold 4 can be separated from one another and removed from the sleeve 3. The crust 3b then forms the outer boundary of the sleeve. Then the cables 1, which are now connected to one another and provided with a sealed sleeve 3, can be laid, for example, in a shaft or earth trench depending on their intended use. The shell parts 5 and 6 are then available again for the manufacture of another sleeve.
Such a sleeve is waterproof and very resistant to chemical agents. But it is hardly damaged by rodents. Furthermore, there can hardly be any cracks in it, so that it results in very permanent insulation of the cable connection.
The cables 1 can be, for example, cables for the transmission of large currents, which are laid in a cable duct or in a trench. If the cable is designed for voltages of 220 or 380 V, components can be used to form the rigid foam, which after mixing release carbon dioxide during foaming, which subsequently remains trapped in the pores. However, if high-voltage cables are involved, components can be used to form the rigid foam which, when foamed, release a strongly electronegative gas such as sulfur hexafluoride or monofluorotrichlorohydrocarbon. Such an electronegative gas improves the insulation properties of the sleeve.
If the pins 5a, 6a of the other shell part, which are in the holes of one shell part, are not sufficient during foaming to hold the shell parts together, other holding means, such as clasps, may of course be present in addition to or instead of the pins. Otherwise, the mold can also consist of more than just two parts.
If foaming of cables and clamps of different thicknesses is provided, a mold with interchangeable inserts can be provided, so that certain parts of the mold can be used for cables and clamps of different thicknesses.
Of course, the sleeves can be used not only when connecting two single-core cables, but also to isolate and protect connections by connecting the conductors of two multi-core cables in pairs. Likewise, the sleeves can also be adapted for connections in which a line is branched, for example three cables are connected to one another. Otherwise, the conductive connection of the conductors can of course also be effected by means of various types of terminals or by splicing.
