Abstract
The compounds of formula I are prepared by hydrolysis of the group -NR<3>R<4> of a compound of formula II and alkoxylation of the adjacent carbon atom. R<1> and R<3> = H or alkyl, R<3> and R<4> = alkyl or form a heterocyclic ring with N, R<6> = H or alk-SO2- and M = alkyl. When R<6> = H, the product of formula I is reacted with an alkanesulphonyl halide in order to convert it to a product of formula I where R<6> = alk-SO2-, which is known as a herbicide. The compound of formula II must be contaminated by less than 1 mole % of hydroquinone or of its derivatives in order that the solutions of the herbicidal product of formula I do not form a precipitate on standing. <IMAGE>
