The compounds of the formula I give plastics excellent protection against thermal-oxidative and light-induced aging. It is known that plastics can be stabilized by adding antioxidants or light stabilizers or a mixture of both, which considerably extends their useful life. Stabilizers have also become known recently, which have both antioxidative and light-protective effects. For example, 4-piperidinol esters of mono- and di- (hydroxybenzyl) malonic acids have already been described in DT-OS 2,456,864, which have a stronger stabilizing effect than a corresponding mixture of a hydroxybenzylmalonate known as an antioxidant and a 4-piperidinol derivative known as a light stabilizer.
If a hydroxybenzyl radical or a hydrogen atom is now replaced in the compounds of German Offenlegungsschrift No. 2,456,864 by an alkyl group or another group known to be ineffective (as previously defined as R3), there is surprisingly an increase in the antioxidative and light-protecting ones Effectiveness. In certain plastics, individual compounds of formula 1 exceed all currently known stabilizers in terms of effectiveness, which means that the invention is of considerable importance for plastics technology.
Preference is given to using compounds of the formula I in which Re to Re is alkyl and Rf is hydrogen or alkyl and the number of C atoms of Re is 1 less than that of Re, and the C number of Rf is 1 less than that of Rb, and where R 'is hydrogen, -O, OH, alkyl with 1-4 carbon atoms, allyl, propargyl, acetyl, acryloyl or crotonyl,
R2 is a hydroxybenzyl group of the formula IIa or IIb,

The compounds of the formula I can be prepared by various methods which consist of several individual steps in various sequences. The individual stages consist of reactions that are known, especially those that are known from the chemistry of malonic acid derivatives.
The synthesis can begin with a malonic acid lower alkyl ester such. B. diethyl malonate converted into the corresponding bis-piperidinyl malonate VI by transesterification with a 4-piperidinol of the formula V.
EMI3.2
Here, R1 can already be the desired substituent in the compound of the formula I, or the nitrogen-unsubstituted tetramethylpiperidinol (V, 1Rt = H) is used and the substituent R1 is introduced after the transesterification or in a later stage of the synthesis route. Polyalkylpiperidinols V where R1 = H can be prepared by reducing the corresponding 4 piperidones, as is described, for example, in DOS 2,623,422.
R1 can be introduced by the customary methods for N-alkylation or N-acylation, for example by reaction with alkyl halides, alkenyl halides, propargyl chloride, benzyl chloride or carboxylic acid chlorides, preferably in the presence of molar amounts of a base. Hydroxyalkyl radicals are introduced by reaction with epoxides, for example ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, and can be converted into the corresponding N-acyloxyalkyl groups by reaction with carboxylic acid chlorides or anhydrides. If R1 is {), then such N-oxyls can be prepared from the NH compounds by oxidation with peracids or hydrogen peroxide.
The compounds with Ro = OH can be produced by reducing such N-oxyls, for example by catalytic hydrogenation.
As the next step, either the substituent R2 and then R3 can be introduced into the compounds of the formula VI or - preferably - the substituent R3 first and then R2.
The introduction of the hydroxybenzyl group R2 can be done by reaction with a hydroxybenzyldithiocarbamate of the formula R2S-CS-N (R15) 2, where R15 is an alkyl group with 1-5 carbon atoms or both groups R35 together with the nitrogen represent a morpholine, pyrrolidine or piperidine ring . Such dithiocarbonates are obtainable by reacting a phenol with formaldehyde, carbon disulfide and a secondary amine.
The reaction of the dithiocarbamates with the malonates of the formula VI takes place in a molar ratio of 1: 1 in the presence of basic reagents such as alkali hydroxides, alkali alcoholates, alkali or alkaline earth hydrides or alkali amides. These bases are preferably used in molar amounts; One equivalent of the base is added per mole of dithiocarbamate. The reaction can take place in solution, for example in alcohols, ethers or hydrocarbons. Polar aprotic solvents such as dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide are also suitable. It is preferred to work in alcoholic solution using alkali metal hydroxide as the base.
Another suitable method for introducing the hydroxybenzyl group R2 into the malonic esters VI consists in their reaction with hydroxybenzylamines R2-N (R15) 2. Such amines can be prepared by reacting phenols with formaldehyde and a secondary amine in a so-called Mannich reaction. Their reaction with the malonates VI is also accelerated with basic catalysts, preferably with alkali amides or alkali alcoholates. Alkali metals are also suitable as catalysts. In contrast to the dithiocarbamate process, however, catalytic amounts, about 0.1 to 5 mol%, of basic catalyst are sufficient.
Instead of the tertiary amines (Mannich bases), their quaternization products can also be used. The classes listed above can be used as solvents, but it is also possible to work without a solvent.
Finally, the radical R2 can also be introduced in the manner of a malonic ester synthesis, in that the ester VI is first converted into the alkali compound of VI by reaction with an equivalent of alkali metal, alkali alcoholate, alkali amide, alkali hydride or a similar basic alkali compound and then with 1 mole of a hydroxybenzyl halide R2Hal (Hal = Cl, Br or I) is implemented in the usual way. Although the two above-mentioned methods of hydroxybenzylation are preferred, the latter method can be of interest in those cases in which the halogen compound R2Hal is readily accessible.
Each of the three methods listed leads to a hydroxybenzylmalonic ester of the formula VII, into which the substituent R3 must then be introduced
EMI4.1
The introduction of the substituent R3 can either take place according to the classic method of C-alkylation of malonic esters, whereby VII is first converted into its alkali compound and then with a halogen compound R3Hal or
R3Hal2 is implemented. Here, Hal again means Cl, Br or J. Depending on whether the synthesis of a compound of the formula I in which n = 1 or 2 is sought, one mole of a monohalide R3Hal or half a mole of a monohalide is used per mole of alkali metal compound of VII Dihalogen compound R3Hal2 used. Examples include alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl halides and alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene or xylylene dihalides. Further examples are halocarboxylic acid esters such. B. chloroacetic acid esters of mono- or divalent hydroxyl compounds, or carboxylic acid esters of halohydrins such. B. esters of 2-chloro ethanol or 3-bromopropanol. Halophosphonic acid esters such as. B. dimethyl chloromethylphosphonate or diethyl2-bromoethylphosphonate are suitable for this.
If iodine is used instead of an organic halogen compound, compounds of the formula I are obtained in which n = 2 and R3 is a direct bond.
In addition to this classic method of C substituents with halogen compounds, the so-called Michael addition method can be used to introduce the radical R3, in which compounds with activated double bonds can be added to the central C atom of the malonate VII under the influence of basic catalysts. The best-known variant is cyanoalkylation with acrylonitrile. Acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, vinyl ketones, vinyl sulfones, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids or esters of vinyl phosphonic acid are also suitable. The catalysts used here are used in amounts of about 0.5 to 5 mol%.
Examples of catalysts that can be used are again alkali metal alcoholates, amides, hydrides or hydroxides or also quaternary ammonium bases such as e.g. Benzyl trimethylammonium hydroxide. Both the classic malonic ester substitution and the Michael addition method are preferably used in solution. Aprotic solvents such as hydrocarbons, ethers or polar solvents can be used such as. B. benzene, toluene, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran or dimethylformamide.
A special method for introducing phosphonomethyl groups as substituent R3 consists in the reaction of a malonate VII with formaldehyde and a diorganophosphite of the formula HP (O) (OR14) 2.
Furthermore, a certain substituent R3 can first be introduced by one of the methods mentioned, which is converted into another group R3 in an additional reaction step. For example, the group R3 = -CH2CH2 COOC2H5 can be introduced by addition of ethyl acrylate, which is converted in a second step by transesterification with ethylene glycol into the divalent group R3 = -CH2CH2 COOCH2CH2 OOCCH2CH2-. Similarly, an intermediate haloalkyl group can be converted to a phenoxyalkyl or a phosphonoalkyl group. Alkylthioalkyl groups can be converted into the corresponding sulfoxides or sulfones by oxidation.
Such an oxidation of the substituent R3 can take place simultaneously with the introduction of oxygen as R1, for example by oxidation with percarboxylic acids. The introduction of R 'can also be done together with the introduction of R3, if R1 and R3 are identical, e.g. in their meaning as alkyl, alkenyl, propargyl or benzyl.
Due to these manifold possibilities for carrying out the individual reaction steps,
Introduction of the piperidinyl residue,
Introduction of group R2,
Introduction of group R3 and, if necessary, introduction of R1, the sequence of the individual steps will be chosen in the way that appears most expedient in the individual case. In the examples given below, the introduction of R2 as the last step is described above all. In principle, any other step can also be selected as the last step.
According to the present invention, the compounds of the formula I can be used as stabilizers for plastics to prevent them from being damaged by the action of oxygen, heat and light. Examples of such plastics are the polymers listed in DT-OS 2 456 864 on pages 12-14.
The stabilization of polyolefins, styrene polymers and polyurethanes, for which the malonates of the formula I are outstandingly suitable, is of particular importance. Examples are high and low density polyethylene. Polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers, polystyrene, styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, mixtures of polyolefins or styrene polymers, polyurethanes based on polyethers or polyester in the form of lacquers, elastomers or foams.
The stabilizers are added to the plastics in a concentration of 0.01 to 5% by weight, calculated on the material to be stabilized. Preferably 0.05 to 1.5, particularly preferably 0.1 to 0.8% by weight of the compounds, calculated on the material to be stabilized, are incorporated into it.
The incorporation can take place after the polymerization, for example by mixing the compounds and optionally further additives into the melt according to the methods customary in the art, before or during the shaping, or by applying the dissolved or dispersed compounds to the polymer, optionally with subsequent evaporation of the solvent.
The new compounds can also take the form of a
Masterbatches that combine these compounds in a
