<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

P (OR).

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The compounds of the formula (I) can be prepared by various methods which consist of several individual steps in various sequences. The individual stages consist of reactions that are known, especially those that are known from the chemistry of malonic acid derivatives.
The synthesis can begin with a malonic acid lower alkyl ester such. B. diethyl malonate converted into the corresponding bis - piperidinyl malonic acid derivative (VI) by reaction with a 4-piperidinol or 4-aminopiperidine of the formula (V).
EMI7.1
In this case, R can already be the substituent desired in the compound of formula (1) or the piperidine derivative unsubstituted on the nitrogen is used, R 1 = H) and the substituent R 1 is introduced after the above reaction or in a later stage of the synthesis route .
R 1 can be introduced by the customary methods for N-alkylation or N-acylation, for example by reaction with alkyl halides, alkenyl halides, propargyl chloride, benzyl chloride or carboxylic acid chlorides, preferably in the presence of molar amounts of a base. Hydroxyalkyl radicals are introduced by reaction with epoxides, for example ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, and can be converted into the corresponding N-acyloxyalkyl groups by reaction with carboxylic acid chlorides or anhydrides. When R 1 -0. such N-oxyls can be prepared from the NH compounds by oxidation with peracids or hydrogen peroxide. The compounds with R 1 = OH can be produced by reducing such N-oxyls, for example by catalytic hydrogenation.
As the next step, either the substituent R2 and then R can be introduced into the compounds of the formula (VI) or - preferably - the substituent R first and then R.
The introduction of the hydroxybenzyl group R2 can be carried out by reaction with a hydroxybenzyldithiocarbamate of the formula
EMI7.2
represent with the nitrogen a morpholine, pyrrolidine or piperidine ring. Such dithiocarbamates can be obtained by reacting a phenol with formaldehyde, carbon disulfide and a secondary amine.
The reaction of the dithiocarbamates with the compounds of the formula (VI) takes place in a molar ratio of 1: 1 in the presence of basic reagents such as alkali metal hydroxides, alkali metal alcoholates, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal
EMI7.3
Use of alkali hydroxide as a base.
Another suitable method for introducing the hydroxybenzyl group R into the compounds (VI) consists in their reaction with hydroxybenzylamines R-N (R). Such amines can be prepared by reacting phenols with formaldehyde and a secondary amine in a so-called Mannich reaction.
Their reaction with the compounds (VI) is also accelerated with basic catalysts, preferably with alkali amides or alkali alcoholates. Alkali metals are also suitable as catalysts. In contrast to the dithiocarbamate process, however, catalytic amounts, about 0.1 to 5 mol%, of basic catalyst are sufficient.
Instead of the tertiary amines (Mannich bases), their quaternization products can also be used. The classes listed above can be used as solvents, but it is also possible to work without a solvent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
If X is oxygen, the radical R2 can also be introduced in the manner of a malonic ester synthesis, in that the ester (VI) is first converted into the alkali compound of (VI) by reaction with one equivalent of alkali metal, alkali alcoholate, alkali amide, alkali hydride or a similar basic alkali compound and then reacted in the usual way with 1 mol of a hydroxybenzyl halide RHal (Hai = Cl, Br or I).
Although the two above-mentioned methods of hydroxybenzylation are preferred, the latter method can be of interest in those cases in which the halogen compound R2 Hal is readily accessible.
EMI8.1
EMI8.2
EMI8.3
Malonic esters happen, whereby (VII) is first converted into its alkali compound and then reacted with a halogen compound R3Hal or R3Hal2. Here, Hal again means Cl, Br or J. Depending on whether the synthesis of a compound of the formula (I) in which n = 1 or 2 is sought, one mole of a monohalide R3Hal is used per mole of alkali metal compound of (VII) half a mole of a dihalogen compound R3Hal2 is used.
Examples of this are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl halides and alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene or xylylene dihalides. Further examples are halocarboxylic acid esters such. B. chloroacetic acid esters of mono- or divalent hydroxyl compounds, or carboxylic acid esters of halohydrins such. B. Esters of 2-chloroethanol or 3-bromopropanol. Halophosphonic acid esters such as. B. dimethylchloromethylphosphonate or diethyl 2-bromoethylphosphonate are suitable for this.
If iodine is used instead of an organic halogen compound, compounds of the formula (I) in which n = 2 and R3 is a direct bond are obtained.
In addition to this classic method of C substitution with halogen compounds, the so-called Michael addition method can be used to introduce the radical R3, in which compounds with activated double bonds are added to the central C atom of compound (VII) under the influence of basic catalysts can. The best-known variant is cyanoalkylation with acrylonitrile. However, acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, maleic acid esters, itaconic acid esters, vinyl ketones, vinyl sulfones, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids or esters of vinyl phosphonic acid are also suitable. The catalysts used here are used in amounts of about 0.5 to 5 mol%. Examples of catalysts that can be used are again alkali metal alcoholates, amides, hydrides or hydroxides or even quaternary ammonium bases such as. B.
Benzyl

polar solvents such as dimethylformamide.
Compounds of the formula (I) in which R3 is a radical of the formula (IV) can be prepared by condensation of two different malonic acid derivatives with formaldehyde in an approximate molar ratio of 1: 1: 1 and subsequent introduction of one or two hydroxybenzyl groups.
Compounds of the formula (I) in which R3 is a group of the formula (ni) can be obtained by condensation of a malonic acid derivative of the formula (VI) with a 4-oxopiperidine and subsequent hydrogenation of the piperidylidene compound formed.
A special method for introducing phosphonomethyl groups as substituent R3 consists in the reaction of a malonic acid derivative (VII) with formaldehyde and a phosphite of the formula
P (OR).
Furthermore, a certain substituent R3 can first be introduced by one of the methods mentioned, which is converted into another group R3 in an additional reaction step. Example

Group R = -CH2 CH2COOCH2CH200CCH2CH2- is converted. Similarly, an intermediate haloalkyl group can be converted to a phenoxyalkyl or a phosphonoalkyl group. Alkylthioalkyl groups can be converted into the corresponding sulfoxides or sulfones by oxidation. Such an oxidation of the substituent R3 can take place simultaneously with the introduction of oxygen as R, for example by oxidation with percarboxylic acids.
Also the introduction of R1 can happen together with the introduction of R3 if R1 and R3 are identical, e.g. B. in their meaning as alkyl, alkenyl, propargyl or benzyl.

and, if necessary, introduction of Ri, the sequence of the individual steps will be chosen in the way that appears most appropriate in the individual case. In the examples given below, the introduction of R2 as the last step is described above all. In principle, any other step can also be selected as the last step.
If the substituent R3 is first introduced into the compounds of the formula (VI) by the methods described above, the intermediates of the formula are obtained

Plastics are the polymers listed in DE-OS 2456864 on pages 12 to 14.
The stabilization of polyolefins, styrene polymers and polyurethanes, for which the malonates of the formula (I) are outstandingly suitable, is of particular importance. Examples of this are high and low density polyethylene. Polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers, polystyrene, styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, mixtures of polyolefins or styrene polymers, polyurethanes based on polyethers or polyester in the form of lacquers, elastomers or foams.
The stabilizers are added to the plastics in a concentration of 0.01 to 5% by weight, calculated on the material to be stabilized. Preferably from 0.03 to 1.5, particularly preferably from 0.2 to 0.6,% by weight of the compounds, calculated on the material to be stabilized, are incorporated into the latter.
The incorporation can take place after the polymerization, for example by mixing the compounds and, if appropriate, further additives into the melt according to the methods customary in the art, before or during the shaping, or by applying the dissolved or dispersed compounds to the polymer, optionally with subsequent addition Evaporation of the solvent.
The new compounds can also be added to the plastics to be stabilized in the form of a masterbatch which contains these compounds, for example, in a concentration of 2.5 to 25% by weight.
In the case of crosslinked polyethylene, the compounds are added before crosslinking.
In addition to the compounds of the formula (1), other, known stabilizers or co-stabilizers can also be added to the plastics. This can e.g. B. antioxidants, light stabilizers or metal deactivators, or costabilizers such. B. those of the phosphorous acid ester type.
Furthermore, other additives customary in plastics technology such as. B. flame retardants, antistatic agents, plasticizers, lubricants, propellants, pigments, reinforcing materials or fillers are added.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The invention therefore also relates to the plastics stabilized by adding 0.01 to 5% by weight of a compound of the formula (I) which, if appropriate, can also contain other known and customary additives.
The plastics stabilized in this way can be used in a wide variety of forms, e.g. B. as films, fibers, tapes, profiles or as binders for paints, adhesives or putty.
The invention also relates to the compounds of the formula (VIII) and their use as light stabilizers for plastics. The substrates suitable for this, the proportions and the methods of incorporation are the same as for the use of the compounds of the formula (1).
The preparation and use of the compounds according to the invention are described in more detail in the following examples. Parts mean parts by weight and percentages mean percentages by weight. The temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
