Note 1 = starke Hemmung (kein Weiterwachsen ab Applikationszeitpunkt, 0%).
Note 9 = keine Hemmung (Wachstum wie unbehandelte Kontrolle, 100%).
Wachstumsregulierung Sojabohne (Wachstumshemmung, Verzweigung, Schotenansatz)

The present invention relates to an agent for influencing plant growth, containing a phenylaminoacetamide of the formula I.
EMI1.1
wherein
R1 and R2 independently of one another are methyl or ethyl, or one of them is methyl and the other is chlorine,
R3 is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl or alkoxyalkyl radical with 3 carbon atoms each or a cyclopropylmethyl radical and
R4 denotes hydrogen, C1-C3-alkyl or -allyl, and its use for influencing, in particular for retarding plant growth.
Active components in which both radicals R1 and R2 represent the methyl radical are preferred.
From DT-OS No. 2 212 268, 2,6-dialkylphenylaminoacetic acid esters have become known as herbicides. However, the action even of those representatives highlighted as preferred, such as N- (2,6-diethylphenyl) -N-chloroacetylaminoacetic acid ethyl ester, is unsatisfactory in many respects (plant selectivity, duration of action, application rate).
In DT-OS No. 2,311,897, some of these representatives, including N- (2,6-diethylphenyl) N-chloroacetylaminoacetic acid ethyl ester, are also included and mentioned.
In addition, however, a large number of N-substituted phenylamines with extremely varied structures are listed which not only do not achieve the herbicidal action of the above-mentioned type of compound, but are in some cases completely ineffective or even destroy useful plants and tolerate weeds. Reading of DT-OS number 2 311 897 gives the person skilled in the art the knowledge that within the very large group of N- (subst) phenyl-N-haloacetylalkanecarboxylic acids or alkanecarboxylic acid derivatives, only those in DT-OS No. 2 212 268 mentioned group of N-haloacylated N-phenylacetic acid esters for practical purposes as selective herbicides in question.
The only substance mentioned as structurally most similar to the compounds of the formula I is N-chloroacetylanilinobutyramide, which is used for comparison in the biological tests mentioned herein.
In US Pat. No. 3,830,841 herbicidal N-amidoalkylhaloacetanilides of other constitution are described and finally BE-PS No. 813,469 discloses similar nucleus-substituted N-chloroacetylphenylaminoalkylacetamides.
Compounds closely related to the active ingredients of the present invention are the benzoylated or otherwise acylated phenylaminoacetamides proposed as therapeutic agents in US Pat. No. 2,676,188, which appear below in the biological comparison of effects.
In none of these literature references are there any indications of the possibility of specific, practical plant morphological changes through application of the proposed groups of active substances. In addition, it has also been shown that the closest comparable compounds in the literature do not have the properties of the active compounds of the formula I according to the invention or only bring about changes in plant growth in the sense of herbicidal, that is to say plant-damaging activity.
It has surprisingly been found that a plant growth retardation which is advantageous in practice is essentially limited to the compounds of the formula I in this class of compounds. Representatives which are directly structurally adjacent outside the scope of the compounds of the formula I also have some of these properties, which are explained in more detail below, but not to an extent that is sufficiently effective for practical use or harmless to the plants.
In contrast to a herbicidal action, as indicated for compounds in the abovementioned literature, a substance that retards plant growth should not have any harmful effect on the plants. The compounds of the formula I meet this requirement to a high degree when applied to emerged plants. In particular, wild grasses as well as cereals are delayed in growth. In practice, this prevents weed growth of railway embankments, road verges, embankments, factories, etc., as well as keeping the sward necessary for fastening the ground intact.
In contrast to the application of a herbicide, there is no destruction of plants and thus soil erosion. Keeping the plant cover short also eliminates the otherwise regularly required grass cutting work, which is problematic in poorly accessible places such as embankments or which increase the risk of accidents in the traffic area of motorways. However, compounds of the formula I also inhibit shrub growth such as privet and the growth of woody plants such as blackberries; both types of plants, the growth of which often contributes to undermining the substructure of track systems. With cereals such as rye and barley in particular, but also wheat, the reduction in length (shortening of the internodal distances) represents a desired increase in the buckling strength of the stalk.
Harvest failures, such as those often caused by storing the grain as a result of continuous rain or hail, can largely be avoided. The two compounds N-chloroacetyl-2,6-dimethylanilinoacetic acid-N'-n-propylamide and N-chloroacetyl-2-methyl-6-ethylanilinoacetic acid-N'-n-propylamide stand out as growth inhibitors on grasses.
Among other things, N-chloroacetyl-2,6-dimethyl-anilinoacetic acid-N'-cyclopropyl-methylamide is particularly noteworthy as a growth inhibitor on cereal species.
In the case of soy plants, the treatment of active ingredients suppresses the vegetative growth of the plants in favor of generative growth (fruit set). This is particularly surprising because, as a rule, a delay in growth automatically leads to a reduction in the fruit set. Closer row spacing of the plants treated with the active ingredients and with a reduced growth width leads to significantly higher hectare yields.
Here, the compounds N-chloroacetyl-2,6-dimethyl (or 2-methyl-6-ethyl) -anilinoacetic acid-N'-n-propylamide and N-chloroacetyl-2,6-dimethylanilinoacetic acid-N 'stand out as active ingredients. -methoxyäthylnmid from.
Some of the compounds of the present invention also show an inhibition of skin instincts which is very effective in practice on tobacco plants and interesting morphological changes in ornamental plants and flowers.
The active ingredients of formula I are stable compounds and have a duration of at least two months of action, but are, for. B. when growing soy, grain or tobacco, decay before the end of the growing season. The application rates are between 0.1 and 10 kg, preferably 2.5 to 5 kg of active ingredient per hectare.
The invention also relates to the use of compounds of the formula I for inhibiting plant growth, in particular on plants of the abovementioned species.
In the pre-emergence process, the compounds of the formula I have good herbicidal properties against gramineae such as millet and millet-like plants and thus to a certain extent also have such effects as have become known from the literature on the active ingredient type of chloroacetanilides.
The new compounds of the formula I are prepared, for example, by adding a phenylamino-acetamide of the formula II
EMI2.1
with a chloroacetylating agent, preferably an anhydride or halide of chloroacetic acid. In formula II, R1, R2, R3 and R4 have the meanings given under formula I.
The starting materials of the formula II are prepared by customary methods, for example by reacting the corresponding aniline of the formula

Biological examples
Inhibition of growth in grasses
In plastic dishes with a soil-peat-sand mixture (6: 3: 1), seeds of the grasses Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, Festuca ovina and Dactylis glomerata were sown and watered normally. The grass that had emerged was cut back weekly to a height of 4 cm and sprayed with aqueous spray mixtures of the active ingredients of the formula I 40 days after sowing and 1 day after the last cut. The amount of active ingredient was the equivalent of 5 kg of active ingredient per hectare.
10 and 21 days after application, the growth of the grass was evaluated according to the following linear grading scale:
Grade 1 = strong inhibition (no further growth from the time of application, 0%).
Grade 9 = no inhibition (growth like untreated control, 100%).
The active ingredients of the formula I achieved a strong inhibition of growth to 70% or less. Compounds No. 1, 2, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19 and others achieved growth reductions to 50% or less.
In contrast, the structurally similar compound N-Benzoyl-4-methylanilinoacetic acid-N '-N' -diethylamide (US Pat. No. 2,676,188, Example 3) achieves almost no reduction with 80-100% grass growth; the compound N-chloroacetyl anilinoacetic acid-N ', N'-diethylamide (US Pat. No. 2,676,188, Example 11) and the compound N-chloroacetyl-anilinobutyramide (DT-OS 2,311,897, No. 61) with 100% height have absolutely none Reduction.
Inhibition of growth in grain
Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum), spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rice (Oryza sativa) are sown in plastic cups in sterilized soil and grown in the greenhouse. Wheat and barley are treated with spray mixtures of the active ingredients 5 days after sowing, rice 12 days after sowing. The foliar application corresponds to 6 and 2 kg of active ingredient per hectare (soil application 500 and 100 ml of broth per pot). After application, the rice cups are coated with water up to 3 cm above ground.
The evaluation took place 7 and 21 days after application.
All of the compounds of the formula I, in particular compounds 2, 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 21, showed a significant shortening and simultaneous strengthening of the stalk.
Soybean growth regulation (growth inhibition, branching, pod attachment)
Soybeans of the varieties Hark, Grosskorn or Lee 68 were sown in an earth-peat-sand mixture (6: 3: 1) in 11 cm pots with 4-5 seeds per pot in the greenhouse at about 25 ° C After emergence, the two strongest plants per pot were thinned out and tied up.
Once the plant 3 unfolded trifol. Leaves had developed, the active compound preparation was sprayed until the surface of the leaves was evenly wetted. The active ingredient concentrations were 1000, 500, 100 and 50 ppm of active ingredient.
After being placed in a climatic room, the plants were watered with a pouring pipe and given a nutrient solution once a week.
The evaluation took place 14 and 28 days after application. The compounds of the formula I achieved strong inhibition of vegetative growth.
