The invention relates to a process for the production of finely divided polymers by the suspension bead polymerization process.
It is known to produce spherically uniform polymers with a narrow particle spectrum in the particle size range from 0.2 to 1.7 mm by the bead polymerization process.
The size of the particles and the particle spectrum depend on various factors. E.g. is in Ind.
Closely. Chem. May 1951, vol. 43, no. 5, pp. 1108-1112 for the polymerization of divinylbenzene describes that when using polyvinyl alcohol with a high degree of hydrolysis and medium viscosity, the narrowest distribution and greatest uniformity of the particles is obtained. Polyvinyl alcohols with a lower degree of hydrolysis and with a higher viscosity yield products with fewer aggregates and smaller particles. According to this reference, polyvinyl alcohol types of low viscosity are said to lead to particles of poor uniformity. If one goes over to smaller particle sizes, only a broad particle spectrum can be obtained.
It has now been found that bead polymers of high uniformity in shape and size and on a narrow particle spectrum in the particle size range from 1 to 25 ltm can be obtained in good yield by the suspension bead polymerization process if, on the one hand, polyvinyl alcohols with a certain degree of hydrolysis are used for the suspension and, on the other hand, certain conditions are adhered to during the polymerization.
The process of the invention is characterized in that 0.3 to 5%, based on monomer and water, of a polyvinyl alcohol with a degree of hydrolysis of 87-89 with low viscosity as the colloid-containing aqueous phase, the monomer and an initiator, at a ratio from monomer to water from 1 to 1 to 1 to 10, suspended with stirring with low stirring intensity, then increased the stirring intensity and homogenized until the maximum desired droplet size, which corresponds directly to the maximum desired particle size, is reached, and then below Stirring with low stirring intensity to temperatures in a range that is 10 to 25 "C below the boiling point of the monomer, heated, this temperature range is maintained as long as
until at least 80% of the monomer has reacted and finally the temperature is increased to 70 to 80 ° C. and the polymerization is ended.
Preferably, a polyvinyl alcohol is used which is 87 to 89% hydrolyzed and has a viscosity, measured as a 4% strength aqueous solution, of 2 to 4 centipoise.
The amount of polyvinyl alcohol necessary to suspend the monomer depends primarily on the ratio between monomer and water and on the total amount of monomer and water, and less on the type of monomer.
For ratios of monomer to water of 1: 1 to 1: 10, 0.3 to 5%, based on monomer and water, of the polyvinyl alcohol described for the suspension is sufficient. A ratio of monomer to water of 1: 5 to 1: 6 and a colloid concentration of 2 to 3%, based on monomer and water, are preferably selected.
The monomers are expediently only suspended with a stirring intensity that is so low that the smallest possible proportion of the monomer droplets is below the maximum desired droplet size. It is advantageous to work in a closed stirred autoclave with an anchor stirrer at a stirring speed of 200 to 700 rpm, without baffles and under nitrogen.
The stirring intensity is then increased. i.e. the suspension is advantageously homogenized with the aid of homogenizers. The intensity and duration of the homogenization depend on the size of the individual polymer particles. The intensity is advantageously kept constant. From time to time samples are taken and the droplet size is determined and homogenization is continued until the desired maximum size of the droplets, which corresponds directly to the maximum desired particle size, is reached.
Then the stirring intensity is reduced, i.e. advantageously the homogenizer is exchanged again with a stirring system and the polymerization is carried out.
Instead of the suspension and subsequent homogenization to adjust to the desired droplet size, a static mixer can be used in one operation, particularly for larger batches.
Appropriate initiators are monomer-soluble with a half-life of less than 15 hours at 70 ° C, such as dilauroyl peroxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, azo-bis-isobutyronitrile or mixtures thereof, and in the usual amounts, advantageously 0.2 to 1%, based on monomer be introduced with the monomer.
The polymerization can be carried out with or without pressure. If the process is carried out without pressure, it is first carried out with stirring and at temperatures in a range which is 10 to 25 "C below the boiling point of the monomer, e.g.
to 45 to 60 "C, maintained as long as this temperature range until at least 80% of the monomer has reacted and finally increases the temperature to end the polymerization, expediently at 70 to 80" C. If pressure is used, it is expedient to choose a pressure such that the boiling point of the monomers is not reached, i.e. a temperature is reached that is 10 to 25 "C lower.
In principle, all monomers and comonomers are accessible to the process of the invention which are necessary for a suspension polymerization in a predominantly aqueous phase, i.e.
a polymerization medium whose proportion of non-polymerizable additives is below 5%, based on monomer and water, can be used, for example: acrylates, preferably with 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alcohol residue, such as methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, propyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate , Methacrylates, expediently with 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alcohol residue, such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, propyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, and also acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride. Further suitable monomers are vinyl esters with 1-18 G atoms in the acid radical.
Such are unbranched vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl laurate, vinyl palmitate, also branched vinyl esters such as vinyl isobutyrate, vinyl pivalate and vinyl esters of the versatic acid type, also vinyl chloride, styrene, divinylbenzene, ethylene, etc., and also polymerizable acids such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, and also dicarboxylic acids such as maleic acid, fumaric acid, their half-esters with 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alcohol radical, or their anhydrides.
The following are of interest as non-polymerizable additives: inorganic or organic acids which are at least partially soluble in the organic phase, such as hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid and others which are able to reduce the rate of decomposition of initiators which can be used. Further possible non-polymerizable additives are organic solvents that can be used to correct interphase voltages or to correct density ratios. Such are in particular alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, n-butanol, isopropanol, or glycols such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol and aromatics such as benzene, toluene, xylene.
After the polymerization has ended, the product is expediently separated from the colloid-containing aqueous phase, advantageously by mere sedimentation or centrifugation, then washed a few times with water and evaporated in a rotary evaporator. The bead polymers are suitable for producing coatings of the most varied of types, solvent-based or aqueous, for electrostatic powder coating and for modifying coatings, in particular for roughening and matting, for producing organosols and as anti-adhesive agents in binders for producing nonwoven fabrics .
example
90 grams of a polyvinyl alcohol which was 87 to 89% hydrolyzed and had a viscosity, measured as a 4% aqueous solution, of 2 to 4 centipoise was dissolved in 3355 grams of deionized water. A mixture of 600 g of monomers according to Table 1, which contained 5 g of di-lauroyl peroxide as initiator, was stirred at 250 rpm. added dropwise to the template within an hour under nitrogen and at room temperature.
To homogenize the prepared monomer suspension, it was poured into a cylindrical 5 l container whose spout was tapered to 9 cm in diameter. A hand blender (Polytron PT 35 OD) was inserted eccentrically up to the stop and allowed to run for a few minutes, depending on the number of tours. The homogenate was examined microscopically from minute to minute by taking samples. It was homogenized until the largest monomer droplets had reached the desired diameter. The droplet size later corresponds to the particle size of the polymer. The remaining opening between the container and hand blender was covered with cotton wool during the homogenization.
The homogenate was poured back into the reaction vessel and initially stirred for 4 hours at a bath temperature of 55 ° C. with 150 rpm. The bath temperature was then increased to 750 ° C. and the reaction mixture was stirred for a further 2 hours under nitrogen. Finally, the mixture was cooled to room temperature.
To separate the polymer from the colloid, it was centrifuged or sedimented overnight and the supernatant solution was then decanted off. Approx.
Topped up with 3.5 l of deionized water and slurried again while stirring. After sedimentation and discarding of the supernatant, water was refilled again and the same procedure was followed. At the end, the solids content was adjusted to 40%, for example, by adding water.
In accordance with the general process specification of the invention, in Examples 1) to 6) the monomer and / or decisive conditions were varied within the limits of the process of the invention. Examples 7) and 8) relate to test conditions which are outside the process of the invention. The test conditions of Examples 1) to 8) are compared with one another in Tables 1 and 2.
The particle size analysis of the products obtained was carried out using a disc centrifuge (JOICE LOEBL MK III).
Deviating from the general procedure of the process of the invention, polymerization was carried out in Example 7) after the suspension of the monomeric methyl methacrylate with increasing the stirring intensity to 740 rpm, direct heating to 80 ° C. and maintaining the bath temperature at 80 ° C. for 5 hours. The result a broad particle size distribution.
Notwithstanding the general rule of the method of the invention and in analogy to the rule for divinylbenzene, described in Ind. Eng. Chem. May 1951, vol. 43, no. 5, pp. 1108-1112, in example 8 a partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol of high viscosity was used as the suspension medium and methyl methacrylate was polymerized in accordance with the preceding example 7). The result was a product with a particle size distribution of 3 to 40 μm and a considerable sieve residue (mesh size 103 μm) originating from agglomerated particles. (The broad particle spectrum does not allow analysis with the disc centrifuge).
