sérigraphiques;
de produits différents (thermomètres); I'impossibilité d'obtenir
I'affichage, la publicité.
The present invention relates to an aqueous suspension of microcapsules containing at least one kind of liquid crystals, cholesteric. It also relates to the process for the preparation of this suspension and the use of this suspension.
This type of aqueous suspensions are already known which allow deposits having the property of forming chromatic effects as a function of the temperature. The applications of these suspensions interest at least potentially very many industrial fields from thermographic control to decoration and advertising.
However, until now the practice of the use of these suspensions has been slowed down due to the existence of several drawbacks which it had not yet been possible to overcome, in particular: Putrescibility, hygroscopy and the permeability of matter
constituting the walls of the microcapsules; Instability and
tendency to flocculation of the concentrated suspensions, to
so necessary if we want to use deposit techniques
screen printing;
The absence of proper coloring of the suspension
tion during the deposit, which prohibits the continuous observation of
the homogeneity of the layer: the poor mechanical strength of the
deposit on many media, and its very high sensitivity
to solvents and moisture; bad contrasts for
certain colors, requiring rather thick layers, without
providing all the desired nuances (in particular
red and yellow):
The impossibility of obtaining very
thin and deformable, especially for applications
medical (skin thermography): a certain lag of
colorations, including blue-violet, towards high temperatures
erasures, for a product considered, and which degrades the effects
desired, especially in the case of concomitant use
different products (thermometers); The impossibility of obtaining
artificial shades, such as silver, gold, etc., and
the almost inevitable obligation to use a black substrate for
make the colors noticeable.
The present invention proposes to eliminate all the aforementioned drawbacks in order to allow a wider use of these suspensions because there is indeed a considerable economic interest in touching all the potential uses of these suspensions which represent a huge market which remained practically unexplored until now. 'now.
To this end, the aqueous suspension according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises: a) from 0.2 to 2% of a first ingredient for sterilization and
tanning: b) from 2 to 20% of a second ingredient formed by a product
sizing or / and a gel-forming product: c) from 3 to 30% of a third plasticizer ingredient: d) from 0.5 to 5% of a fourth fluorescent ingredient: in percentage by weight of the initial suspension.
The process for the preparation of this suspension is characterized by the fact that one starts with an aqueous suspension of microcapsulated cholesteric liquid crystal base and that it is subjected to the following treatment: the suspension is stirred under vacuum and heats to a temperature
ture 30 C to increase the title to about 40%: the first ingredient is added in a ratio of 1% by weight.
dient and stir the suspension: a separate mixture is prepared consisting of the second and
third ingredient in a volume ratio of 2 to 7
in about two volumes of distilled water, as well as
of the fourth ingredient, added at the rate of I gll:
: once this mixture has been stirred and cooled, it is added in quantities
of 1 part for 3 parts to the first suspension, and - finally the suspension is diluted by stirring with distilled water
to obtain the desired consistency.
And finally, such a suspension is used to form deposits having the property of forming chromatic effects as a function of the temperature.
Such suspensions not only overcome the drawbacks listed above, but also provide additional possibilities, which increases their economic interest by expanding on the one hand the markets by lowering cost prices and improving the lifespan of both products. before and after the deposition of sensitive layers. Moreover, the introduction of a small quantity of a product with clear fluorescence in ultraviolet, under observation under Wood's light, allows an appreciation of the quality of the deposit, even outside the zones of color change or in the still wet phase. .
In the case of gelatin encapsulation, the following additives are added: formaldehyde to eliminate putrescibility, hygroscopy and permeability of the material from the walls of the microcapsules, as well as the instability and tendency to flocculation of the suspensions : Eosin to color the suspension red; polymethyl methacrylate polyoxide or polyvinyl alcohol: Senegal gum, a white discolored variety, or / and albumin, a quality binder for decorative arts.
In the case where there is not miscibility of the adjuvants with each other, for example Senegal gum, and poly (methyl methacrylate) oxide, the suspension is stirred by means of ultrasound to create an emulsion.
In the case where a certain resistance to humidity of the deposit produced is desired, from 2 to 12% of powdered albumin is added to the additive preparation, it is emulsified in the cold, optionally removing the gum Senegal. The final layer obtained by the usual method is then heated with a slow rise in temperature, for example 10 min to rise from 20 to 60-, in order to coagulate the included albumin, which produces the desired effect.
According to another variant, 0.5 to 10% by weight of colloidal carbon is added to the suspension in order to obtain either a product incorporating its own black base so that the heat-sensitive colors are directly perceptible, or an electrical conduction allowing directly obtain a warm-up by effect
Joule to cause color changes at will, for example for the use of the suspension for decoration,
Display, advertising.
According to another variant, the suspension also contains a blue-violet dye which makes it possible to eliminate the colored drag in the high zones of the thermosensitive response. A similar effect can be achieved by using a support of this shade.
An example of a suspension is as follows:
The starting point is an aqueous base suspension of microcapsulated cholesteric liquid crystals, with gelatin capsules 5 to 50 μ in diameter and whose titer is 22% solid.
The suspension is stirred under vacuum by heating it to a temperature of 30 ° C. in order to raise its titer to approximately 40% by evaporation of the water. Formaldehyde is added in a ratio of 1% by weight based on the initial weight as a bactericidal, fungicidal and hardening product to the capsule material. The suspension is stirred for 30 min by means of a stirrer with a wooden paddle, the speed of rotation of which is 30 rev / min.
An additional mixture is prepared composed of polyvinyl alcohol constituting the plasticizer, Senegal gum, a white discolored variety, constituting the sizing product, these two substances being present in a volume ratio of 7 to 2 and brought to 80 '. C in two volumes of distilled water, and eosin as fluorescent agent, the latter component being added in an amount of I g / l. This mixture is then stirred for approximately 1 hour by means of a wooden pallet, the speed of rotation of which is 30 rpm. Once this mixture has cooled, it is added in quantities of
I share 3 parts of the suspension obtained above, the addition being carried out gradually at a temperature of 20 C.
Finally, the suspension obtained is diluted with distilled water to obtain the desired consistency by stirring it for 30 min using a wooden pallet with a speed of rotation of 30 rev / min.
The suspension thus obtained is used in particular in screen printing on matte black paper of 250 g / m2 by passing it through a polyester screen of mesh size N 50, drying for 30 s in blown air at a temperature of 30 C, then on hurdle at 20th C.
The varnishing is then carried out through a passage with a polyester screen of mesh size N 5 and then covered with a cellulose coating constituting a protective layer.
According to a preferred form of the invention, the diameter of the microcapsules is between 30 and 50 y, which allows more refined colors, red in particular.
Instead of polyvinyl alcohol as a plasticizing substance, use is made as an alternative to polymethyl methacrylate polyoxide or a product known by the name of poloxalene (Merck) or methacrylic acid treated so as to obtain methyl in the deposit. polymerized methacrylate.
The transparent mixture of plasticizer and sizing product also has an optical refractive index as close as possible to that of the material of the walls of the microcapsules, in order to eliminate the diffusion and diffraction phenomena responsible for a large part of the degradation of contrast and color; the colorations obtained are then more beautiful for a much smaller quantity of microcapsules than in the techniques used hitherto. An adequate choice of these adjuvants also makes it possible to obtain correct impermeability and good elasticity of the product, which makes it possible to carry out subsequent treatments on a dry deposit, for example varnishing, printing, etc.
Another variant provides for the addition of an anti-wetting agent to the suspension or its use on a non-wettable support such as, for example, untreated Mylar or Teflon, in order to obtain, after drying, a sensitive peelable layer which can be obtained. or not make it adhesive. The deposition of such a suspension will be used in particular in medicine for skin thermal readings with preferably a second flexible black film as support.
In addition, the suspensions according to the invention can contain several kinds of liquid crystals for different temperature ranges, which makes it possible to obtain synthetic colors by transmission or reflection in the presence or absence of a light polarizing screen.
Preferably, the liquid crystals have a shifted response range in order to obtain effects of transparency, of bronze color.
