Carver, New York, durchgeführt.
Latex 335 ml 1 ,1,1-Tri(hydroxymethyl)propan 12 g
Verdickungsmittel 14,25 ml
Natriumsalz von Sulfosalicylsäure 10 g
Gelatine
ULTRAVON W (10 HOige, wässrige Lösung) 5 ml
Wasser 633 ml

This invention relates to a method of improving the adhesion of hydrophilic layers to dimensionally stable polyester film supports and, more particularly, to improving the adhesion of hydrophilic photographic layers to dimensionally stable polyethylene terephthalate films and to photographic materials obtained thereby.
To ensure complete adhesion of hydrophilic layers such as photographic, light-sensitive emulsion layers to dimensionally stable polyester film supports, i.e. H. Polyester films that are biaxially stretched and thermoset are known to interpose multiple interlayers between the support and the photosensitive emulsion layer.
In most cases two intermediate layers are needed. A first layer, the adhesive layer, shows good adhesion to the polyester film and at the same time has good adhesion properties with regard to the second layer, the adhesive layer, which is usually largely formed from a hydrophilic colloid such as gelatin.
It is known that the adhesion of the adhesive layer to the polyester film carrier can be promoted by various means, which can be used individually or in combination: Use of chlorine-containing copolymers as
Binders for the adhesive layer; Application of the adhesive layer prior to stretching and thermosetting of the polyester film carrier, the latter being carried out at a temperature of about 2000 C; - addition of compounds to the casting composition; they are generally organic solvents that attack the surface of the polyester film surface.
Although such an adhesive layer itself adheres very tenaciously to a dimensionally stable polyester film carrier, an additional adhesive layer is still required. In fact, it can be said that the adhesion of a photographic, gelatin-containing layer directly to the hydrophobic adhesive layer leaves much to be desired. This confirms the general rule that good adhesion of a gelatin layer to a hydrophobic film surface can only be obtained if the surface of the hydrophobic film has been provided with an adhesive layer which contains a sufficient amount of gelatin.
The subject of the present invention is a single adhesive layer which combines the properties of the usual two-layer adhesive combination. In this single layer, chlorine-containing copolymers are present as binders, so that complete adhesion to the polyester film carrier is obtained. Furthermore, the single adhesive layer contains a sufficient amount of gelatin so that photographic emulsion layers containing gelatin also quickly adhere to the adhesive layer.
As mentioned above, the adhesion of the adhesive layer to the polyester film support can always be improved if the support and the adhesive layer are heated together to a temperature of about 2000.degree. In practice, this can only be done if the adhesive layer is applied after the polyester film has been stretched longitudinally. The polyester film thus coated is then stretched in the transverse direction to the desired extent and heat setting is carried out at a temperature of about 2000 ° C. while the film is kept under tension.
It is also known that a polymer or a low molecular weight product can only be stretched if the temperature during the stretching is higher than the softening point of the polymer or the low molecular weight product. The stretching of polyester film normally occurs at around 800 C. Since gelatin has an immeasurable softening point, it is impossible to stretch a dry gelatin layer at this temperature of 800 C. If a layer that consists only of a mixture of gelatine and a chlorine-containing copolymer is stretched, layers are always veiled.
This can only be ascribed to the fact that the miscibility of gelatin and the chlorine-containing polymer is insufficient to ensure that the presence of the stretchable polymer will favorably affect the stretchability of the gelatin.
Another object of the invention is to provide hydrophilic layers in general and photographic, gelatin-containing layers in particular, which adhere well to a dimensionally stable polyester film by using a single adhesive layer which contains a mixture of gelatin and a chlorine-containing copolymer.
Another object of the invention is to improve the adhesion of the adhesive layer to the polyester film base by heating both to 180-220 ° C. Another object is the inclusion of additives in the casting composition of the adhesive layer so that the polyester film backing. which carries the adhesive layer can be stretched to a sufficiently high degree and thermoset at 180-220 C to obtain a dimensionally stable polyester film, the adhesive layer of which remains completely clear during the stretching and thermosetting.
According to the invention, a method is presented to improve the adhesion of hydrophilic layers on a dimensionally stable polyester film carrier, the method comprising the following steps: after the longitudinal stretching of the polyester film carrier, applying a single adhesive layer to it, stretching the polyester film carrier coated in this way Transverse direction and heat curing at 180¯220t C. The adhesive layer contains 30 to 80 wt.% Of a chlorine-containing copolymer, 5 to 30 wt.% Gelatin, 5 to 40 wt.% Of a plasticizer for the gelatin, as will be explained below, and 8 up to 30 Ges.% of a metal complex-forming, antistatic agent.
Plasticizers for gelatin according to the invention are understood as meaning compounds which are soluble or dispersible in water and photographically inert and have the property of making layers formed from mixtures of gelatin and chlorine-containing polymers stretchable, these layers being. after being stretched and heated to relatively high temperatures, remain completely transparent. The action of these so-called plasticizers is based not only on the known effects that are shown by external plasticizers, as it is e.g. B. in the book Plasticization and Plasticizer Processes, Advances in Chemistry, Series 48 - American Chemical Society, Washington D.C., 1965, was described.
This effect probably also leads to an improvement in the miscibility between gelatin and chlorine-containing copolymer, so that the chlorine-containing copolymer actually serves as an actual, external plasticizer for gelatin.
Suitable plasticizers are aliphatic polyhydroxy compounds such as glycerine. Tn # -hydroxyethyl) glycene, 1,1,1-tri (hydroxymethyl) propane, 2-nitro-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol, 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol, 1,2,4 -Butanetriol, 3-hydroxymethyl-2,4-dihydroxypentane, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, 2-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxyamyl alcohol, glyceraldehyde and mannitol.
Likewise suitable compounds are caprolactam and N, N'-dimethylurea. Other suitable plasticizers are aliphatic carboxylic or sulfonic acids, such as glutaric acid, adipic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, mono- and dichloroacetic acid, 1,2,3-propentricarboxylic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid and 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate; also aromatic acids, such as phthalic acid, o-sulfobenzoic acid, o-nitrobenzoic acid, o-aminobenzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and salicylic acid.
The chlorine-containing copolymers of the adhesive layer are copolymers which contain 70 to 95% by weight of vinyl chloride and / or vinylidene chloride, 0.5 to 10% by weight of a hydrophilic monomer and 0.5 to 25% by weight of at least one other copolymerizable monomer.
Esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, such as methyl, ethyl, butyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl, glycidyl and cyanoethyl acrylate or methacrylate, can be used as copolymerizable monomers; also vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate and the vinyl ester of versatic acid, which is sold by Shell Chemical Co. under the trade name VEOVA 10 and is a branched-chain vinyl carboxylic acid ester with a molecular weight of 198 and corresponds to the following formula:
EMI2.1
wherein R ", R2 and R3 represent alkyl groups which together have 7 to 9 carbon atoms and wherein only one of Rz, R2 and R3 represents a methyl group.
Other suitable copolymerizable monomers are acrylonitrile, acrolein and vinyl sulfofluoride.
The hydrophilic monomer can be one of the following: acrylic acid. Methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, amides of acrylic and methacrylic acid, monoalkyl esters of maleic acid and vinyl pyrrolidine.
The chlorine-containing copolymer is added in latex form to the gelatin-containing casting composition. This latex is obtained by emulsion polymerization of the various comonomers using known emulsion polymerization techniques. The so-called primary dispersion obtained directly after emulsion polymerization can be used as such or after adjusting its concentration. Widely varying concentrations can be used. This will depend on the final concentration and viscosity needed in the casting composition.
Suitable metal complex-forming, antistatic agents are sulfosalicylic acid, 2,5-disulfohydroquinone, the sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ethanolaminodiacetic acid, the sodium salt of N- (o-hydroxybenzyl) -aminodiacetic acid, the monosodium salt of vanadium sulfinic acid, 3,5-sodium salt of vanadium sulfinic acid, Phosphonoacetic acid, ethylene-1,2-diphosphonic acid, butylene-1,4-diphosphonic acid and ascorbic acid.
The known casting additives can be added to the coating composition of the adhesive layer, such as dispersants, coating aids, antiseptic agents for the gelatin and thickeners, which are generally highly viscous, water-soluble polymers whose sole task is to adjust the viscosity of the coating composition to the desired level. An overview of the thickening of latexes and the thickening agents that can be used is from Houben-Weyl in Methods of Organic Chemistry, Macromolecular Substances. Volume 14/1, pages 519 and 536, Georg Thieme-Verlag, Stuttgart (1961).
The chlorine-containing copolymer is added in the form of a primary dispersion and in the above-mentioned proportions to the aqueous gelatin solution, after which the plasticizer and possibly the antiseptic agent are mixed therewith in aqueous solution. The viscosity of the casting composition thus formed is adjusted as desired and known casting additives are added to the composition. Finally, the casting composition is applied in a known manner to a polyester film which has been stretched three to five times in only one direction, preferably in the longitudinal direction. After the layer has dried, the polyester film is stretched three to five times in a direction that is perpendicular to the first stretching direction, preferably in the transverse direction.
The coating composition for the adhesive layer is applied in such a ratio that, after the second stretching operation, a layer is obtained which has a thickness between 0.10 and 2 microns.
After the dimensional orientation of the polyester film by stretching in two mutually perpendicular directions, the polyester film, which carries the adhesive layer, is passed through a thermosetting zone, where it is heated to a temperature between 180 and 2200 C, while the film is kept under tension in both directions becomes.
This forms a dimensionally stable, completely clear polyester film. Hydrophilic layers such as gelatin-containing silver halide emulsion layers can be applied directly to the adhesive layer and adhere firmly to this layer. The adhesion of the hydrophilic layer to the polyester film is excellent both in the dry and in the wet state during the processing of the photographic material in the various photographic processing baths.
The dimensional stability of the polyester film is of great importance for certain application purposes. This is e.g. B.
the case when the polyester film is to be used as a support for a photographic light-sensitive material as usual in the graphic arts field. In this case, the polyester film is generally heated to a temperature between 110 and 1500 ° C. for a short time after the thermosetting, while the film is kept under a tension sufficiently low to allow it to shrink. This processing is the so-called relaxation of the polyester film, which usually follows the thermosetting treatment.
During the thermosetting and relaxation, the adhesive layer can adhere to the various conveying rollers.
It is an additional object of this invention to reduce the tackiness of the adhesive layer applied to the polyester film when that film is heated to relatively high temperatures during thermosetting and relaxation. The reduction in tack does not affect the other properties of the adhesive layer at all.
The reduction is achieved by adding 5 to 100% by weight, preferably 15 to 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the layer, of a silane compound according to the following general structural formula to the casting composition of the adhesive layer:

The stickiness of the adhesive layer and the reduction in the stickiness of this layer through the addition of silane compounds according to the invention can be measured in a very simple manner.
Two strips of film of this material are placed in a heated press for 150 seconds, with the two adhesive layers facing each other. The press was heated in advance to 1250 C and then kept at this temperature during the entire pressing time under a pressure of 70 kg / cm2. The experiments described in the example were carried out with a Carver Laboratory Press from Fred 5. Carver, New York. Adhesion layers which do not contain any silane compounds according to the invention show a heat-welding effect, so that the two film strips can hardly be separated from one another. Generally, the two strips of film will be damaged.
Thanks to the addition of the silane compounds according to the invention in amounts of 5 to 100% by weight, preferably 15 to 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the adhesive layer, the adhesion of the adhesive layers to one another is usually completely avoided. In addition, no deterioration in the coverage of the adhesive layer, the adjacent layer, the brightness or the appearance of the layer, the adhesion of the adhesive layer to the polyester film support or the adhesion of the subsequent layers to the adhesive layer was observed.
Polyester film supports having adhesive layers containing silane compounds can be used as supports in the manufacture of photographic materials containing light-sensitive silver halide. They can also be used as supports in the production of drawing film, color film materials, antistatic film materials and for all purposes known in the graphic arts.
The examples given below are particularly directed to the use of polyethylene terephthalate film as a support for the adhesive layer and the hydrophilic layer or layers. However, the adhesive layer can also be applied to other polyester films, e.g. B.
on polyesters obtained from the polycondensation of glycol or mixtures of glycols with terephthalic acid or mixtures of terephthalic acid with small amounts of other dicarboxylic acids such as isophthalic acid, diphenic acid and sebacic acid.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples.
example 1
A substantially amorphous polyethylene terephthalate film with a thickness of approximately 2.2 mm is formed according to an extrusion process starting from molten polyethylene terephthalate at a temperature of about 2800 C and then quenched on a cooling cylinder at a temperature of about 750 C, and in Stretched longitudinally over a differential roller system that stretches to 3.5 times the initial dimension at a temperature of 840 C.
On the so stretched film, a layer is applied in a ratio of 70 m2 / liter of the following composition:
Latex 335 ml 1,1,1-tri (hydroxymethyl) propane 12 g
Thickener 14.25 ml
Sodium salt of sulfosalicylic acid 10 g
gelatin
ULTRAVON W (10 HOige, aqueous solution) 5 ml
Water 633 ml
The pH of the casting composition is adjusted to 8.2 with ammonia.
The latex used has a concentration of 20% by weight and is formed by the emulsion copolymerization of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, n-butyl acrylate and itaconic acid (63: 30: 5: 2 wt. Wo), as described in British Patent 1,234,755 becomes.
The thickener is a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid (80:20% by weight). It is added in the form of an aqueous dispersion with a concentration of 20% by weight.
ULTRAVON W is the trade name of Ciba AG, Switzerland, for a dispersant that consists of the disodium salt of heptadecylbenzimidazole disulfonic acid.
After the layer has dried, the film is stretched 3.5 times at a temperature of about 870 ° C. in a tenter in the transverse direction. The final thickness of the film is about 0.180 mm.
The film is then fed into an extension of the tenter where it is thermoset, while held under tension, at a temperature of 2000 ° C for about one minute. After thermosetting, the coated film is cooled and rolled up in the normal manner.
The thus thermoset film is subjected to a corona discharge and provided with a gelatin silver halide emulsion layer as used in X-ray photographic material. The layers of the photographic material obtained in this way show very good adhesion to the polyester film support, both in the wet and in the dry state.
The adhesion in the dry state is checked before and after the treatment. The gelatin layer is scratched crosswise with a sharp knife, after which an adhesive tape pressed on it is immediately torn off again. The quality is only satisfactory if only very small pieces of the photographic layer are torn off.
The adhesion in the wet state was checked by scratching the surface of the material and trying to rub the gelatin layer with a finger after each step of the photographic treatment (development, rinsing, fixing, rinsing). According to the experiment, the gelatin layer cannot be damaged during this rubbing.
Example 2
An amorphous polyethylene terephthalate film 1.2 mm thick is formed by placing molten polyethylene terephthalate on a cooling cylinder at a temperature of about 2800 ° C. by the extrusion process and then stretching it 3.5 times in the longitudinal direction.
The thus stretched film is subjected to corona discharge and then coated with the following solution at a ratio of 75 m 2 / liter.
Latex 125 ml
Gelatin 20 g
Sodium salt of sulfosalicylic acid 10 g 1,1,1 -Tri (hydroxymethyl) propane 20 g
As in Example 1, the latex has a concentration of 20% by weight, but this time it is obtained by emulsion polymerization of vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate and itaconic acid (88: 10: 2 total%). Excellent adhesion of the hydrophilic layer is obtained in the dry and in the wet state.
Example 3
The procedure of Example 1 is repeated with the difference that the longitudinally stretched polyethylene terephthalate film is covered with the following coating composition in a ratio of 70 m3 / liter:
Latex (as in Example 1) 335 ml
Gelatin 6g
Sodium salt of sulfosalicylic acid 10 g o-sulfobenzoic acid 10 g
Water 640 ml
Before application, the composition is brought to pH 8 by adding ammonium hydroxide.
After transverse stretching and heat setting, a gelatin-silver halide emulsion layer of the type used in X-ray photographic material is applied to the adhesive layer.
The layers show excellent adhesion in both dry and wet conditions.
If the o-sulfobenzoic acid is omitted in the above-described coating composition, the adhesive layer is completely obscured after the support has been stretched, which makes the material completely unsuitable for use as a support for photographic materials.
Examples 4 and 5
The procedure of Example 3 is repeated. In the casting composition, however, the o-sulfobenzoic acid has been replaced by the same amount of itaconic acid or 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate. In both cases an X-ray photographic material is obtained, the layers of which show excellent adhesion both in the dry and in the wet state.
Example 6
The procedure of Example 3 is repeated, but with the difference that the o-sulfobenzoic acid is replaced by 15 g of glutaric acid and the amount of water is 635 ml instead of 640 ml. Excellent adhesion of the layers is obtained in the dry and in the wet state.
The procedure of Example 1 is repeated with the difference that 50 ml of trimethoxy- [3 (2,3 -epoxypropoxy) -propyl] -silane are added to the coating composition, which is applied to the elongated polyethylene terephthalate film, and that the amount of water is 600 ml is reduced.
The coating composition is applied as described in Example 1 and, after drying, the film is stretched transversely to 3.5 times the normal width in a tenter at a temperature of about 870 ° C.
In an extension of the tenter frame, the film is thermoset at 2000 C for about 1 minute because it is held under tension. The film is then cooled down. In contrast to the description in Example 1, the thermoset and cooled film is passed through a relaxation zone, where it is heated for about 2 minutes at 1250 ° C. under reduced tension so that it can shrink.
The two strips of thermoset and relaxed film material are pressed together in a heated press, as described above, with the adhesive layers facing each other. After heating for 150 seconds at 1250 C and pressing together at 70 kg / cm2, the strips separate spontaneously on cooling.
The procedure of Example 1 was continued by coating the thermoset and relaxed film bearing the adhesive layer with a gelatin silver halide emulsion layer used for lithographic purposes.
The adhesion of the photosensitive layer on the adhesive layer and the adhesive layer on the polyester film support were excellent in both dry and wet conditions.
