The subject of the invention is a device for automatically stopping and restarting the engine of a motor vehicle when the vehicle is temporarily stopped.
The growing increase in the number of vehicles circulating in Switzerland, in particular in large cities, raises a problem, the solution of which is becoming increasingly urgent. It is known that the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, in particular Otto combustion engines, contain toxic products, in particular carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO) x and hydrocarbons (HC ) and lead. These products are dangerous for humans and various measures have already been taken by the government to try to reduce them. Other more effective measures are currently under consideration, but it will likely be several years before effective legislation comes into force.
A study of the problem has shown that greater discipline on the part of the motorist would limit the accumulation of toxic products, particularly in cities. If, for example, we examine a major intersection in a large city, we find that a large number of cars are immobilized, often for several minutes, with the engine idling. We know that for most cars, idling is the unfavorable speed and that between 2 and 6% carbon monoxide is produced at this speed. It would therefore be beneficial if the engine of each vehicle could be stopped at any time when the latter is stopped.
The aim of the invention is therefore to provide a device making it possible to automatically stop and restart the engine of a vehicle by a simple maneuver, when the latter is momentarily stopped, for example at a red light.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises means arranged to compare the speed of rotation of a part of the vehicle in connection with the engine with a predetermined speed of rotation and to stop the operation of the engine after a lapse of time. of predetermined time from the moment when the speed of rotation of the part becomes smaller than the predetermined speed of rotation, and means for restarting the motor by actuating a contactor, these restarting means being arranged to control the restart after having noticed that the engine has been stopped.
In a preferred embodiment, the means for comparing the rotational speed of the engine with a predetermined rotational speed comprise a sensor arranged to deliver a pulse at each revolution of a rotating part of the vehicle to a comparator connected to an oscillator reference controlling an ignition relay via a timer circuit to interrupt the ignition circuit after a predetermined period of time chosen with the aid of the timer circuit as soon as the rotating part of the vehicle turns at a frequency lower than that of the reference oscillator.
The switch can be controlled by the gas pedal or by the vehicle brake pedal.
An embodiment and a variant of the device according to the invention are shown by way of example in the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 represents the block diagram of a device intended to be fitted to an automobile fitted with a clutch and a manual gearbox, and
fig. 2 shows a variant of the device of FIG. 1 adapted to an automobile fitted with an automatic gearbox.
In the diagram of fig. 1 the breaker 1 is connected on the one hand to the primary winding 2 of an ignition coil 3 and on the other hand to a shaping circuit 4 intended to transform the pointed pulses coming from the platinum screws of the breaker 1 into pulses of square shape, which are transmitted to a comparator 5 itself connected to a reference oscillator 6 also delivering a train of square pulses with a frequency of approximately 850 periods per minute. The output of comparator 5 is connected to a control input 7 of an ignition relay 8 via a timer circuit 9 set to keep relay 8 energized while comparator circuit 5 powers timer circuit 9. .
The input 10 of the main circuit of the relay 8 is connected to the primary winding 2 of the ignition coil 3, the secondary winding 11 of which supplies the distributor 12 when the working contacts of the relay 8 are closed. An additional relay 13 can be connected in parallel with the relay 8 and will be interposed for example in the supply circuit of the vehicle headlights. It will thus be possible to avoid too much stress on the battery when the vehicle engine is often stopped during a night trip.
The output of the shaping circuit 4 connected to the comparator 5 has a deviation going to a second comparator 14 connected to a reference oscillator 15 delivering pulses with a frequency of 500 cycles per minute. The second comparator will deliver a control signal to a starter relay 16 which will be activated by a switch 17 connected to the vehicle's throttle pedal so as to be engaged when the driver applies slight pressure on the gas pedal. This switch 17 also controls the change of state of the ignition relay 8.
The device which has just been described operates as follows:
Suppose that the vehicle provided with the device of FIG. 1 is traveling normally. The breaker 1 delivers pulses on the one hand to the primary winding 2 of the coil 3 and on the other hand to the shaping circuit 4 which transmits these pulses, after having put them in square form, to the comparator 5. The comparator 5 compares them to those coming from oscillator 6 and transmits them to timer 9 provided that the frequency of these pulses is greater than that of reference oscillator 6, therefore greater than a frequency of 850 pulses per minute as mentioned above . Timer 9 is set so as to keep the make contacts of ignition relay 8 closed when timer 9 receives at least one pulse every 5 to 15 seconds.
As the motor is running normally, the frequency of the pulses arriving at the comparator is well above 850 periods per minute and the timer 9 set for a period of 5 to 15 seconds keeps the working contacts of the relay 8 closed. The pulses delivered by the secondary winding 11 of the coil 3 therefore reach the distributor 12 and the motor turns normally. The work contacts of relay 13 which is connected in parallel with ignition relay 8 are also closed and the headlights are supplied with power if they are on. Now suppose that the vehicle comes to a red light. The engine speed drops to idle, that is to say below 850 revolutions per minute.
Comparator 5 stops supplying timer 9 and at the end of the period going from 5 to 15 seconds following the setting of timer 9, the working contacts of the ignition relay open and the pulses delivered by the breaker 1 n 'no longer arrive in the primary winding 2 of the coil 3. The distributor 12 is no longer supplied and the motor stops. The working contacts of relay 13 which is in parallel with ignition relay 8 also open and the power supply to the headlights is cut off. It is obvious that care will be taken to insert relay 13 only in the large headlights and codes circuit and not in the position lights circuit. So when the engine stops and the headlights are on, only the large headlights or codes will be off. The sidelamps indicating the presence of the vehicle will thus remain on.
Now suppose that the traffic light turns green and the driver of the vehicle wishes to restart his vehicle. All he has to do is press the gas pedal lightly, which will close contactor 17. Closing this contactor will, on the one hand, switch ignition relay 8 and close the working contacts of this relay and, on the other hand, control. the starter relay 16. For this relay 16 to actuate the starter and thus start the engine, a final command is necessary. This command is given by comparator 14 which will activate relay 16 only if the frequency of the pulses coming from the shaping circuit is lower than the comparison frequency delivered by oscillator 15.
This oscillator frequency has been chosen at 500 periods per minute, so below the lowest idle that can hold an engine under normal operating conditions. The starter relay 16 will therefore only be activated if the engine is stopped. This avoids engaging the starter when the engine is running. It is obvious that as soon as the motor is started, its speed of rotation almost instantly exceeds 500 revolutions per minute, which speed corresponds with the frequency delivered by oscillator 15 and which is compared in comparator 14.
As soon as the rotation speed exceeds these 500 revolutions per minute, the comparator immediately disengages the starter relay.
As soon as the engine is running, the driver reduces throttle, engages gear and can start.
One immediately notices the advantages and the simplicity of the device which has just been described. When a vehicle needs to stop for any reason, the engine will automatically shut down after a period of 5 to 15 seconds from the time the engine is idling.
This period of 5 to 15 seconds can be set using timer 9. It was chosen between the two limits mentioned above because these limits seem reasonable but it is obvious that it can be lengthened or shortened for short periods. specific goals.
As soon as the driver of the vehicle wants to set off again, all he has to do is lightly press the gas pedal and the engine starts up again. Finally, if the driver does not want to stop his engine because he sees that he will be able to start again immediately, it will suffice for him to give a slight boost to the accelerator for the engine to rise above 850 revolutions per minute. It will thus avoid unnecessary restarting.
The user of the device will therefore be able to avoid any unnecessary running of the engine when his vehicle is stopped, and this without any manipulation, apart from throwing the accelerator to restart. Any unnecessary production of exhaust gases and therefore toxic products will be avoided.
It should be noted that the frequency values chosen to adjust the two oscillators 6 and 15 which respectively deliver oscillations with a frequency of 850 and 500 periods per minute, correspond to values situated slightly above and below the idle speed of a four-cylinder engine.
It is obvious that in the case of a 6 or 8 cylinder engine, these values will have to be reduced.
The variant of FIG. 2 is produced for a vehicle fitted with an automatic transmission without a clutch pedal. In this variant, the platinum screws of a breaker 20 supply power as in the embodiment of FIG. 1, on the one hand the primary winding 21 of the ignition coil 22 and on the other hand a shaping circuit 23, which is connected to a comparator 24 of the same type as that of the embodiment of FIG. . 1. This comparator 24 compares the frequency delivered by the shaping circuit with that of a reference oscillator 25, which delivers a frequency located below that of the idling speed of an engine, for example 500 cycles per minute, and transmits control signals to a starter relay 26 only if the frequency delivered by the shaping circuit is below the frequency of the reference oscillator.
As in the device of FIG. 1, the shaping circuit 23, the comparator 24 and the reference oscillator are present to prevent the starter from being turned on when the engine is running.
As in the device of FIG. 1, the secondary winding 27 of coil 22 is connected to the distributor, not shown, and an ignition relay 28 is connected to the primary circuit of coil 22, this relay being controlled as in the device of FIG. 1 by a timer circuit 29, itself connected to a shaping circuit 30. The shaping circuit 30 cannot here be supplied directly by the platinum screws of the breaker 20, because as the vehicle is provided with an automatic gearbox, the vehicle may be running while the engine is idling. For this reason, the shaping circuit is connected to a sensor 31 detecting the rotation of a transmission part of the vehicle, for example the rotation of the axle of the wheels, of a part of the cardan shaft or of the speedometer cable. kilometer.
The sensor 31 therefore detects whether the vehicle is moving or stationary. It can be a magnetic or electro-optical detector and be arranged to produce a pulse each time the chosen moving part of the vehicle makes a complete rotation. The sensor 31 may be in the form of a photoelectric cell in front of which passes a bore made in a rotating part of the vehicle. Each passage of the bore will therefore produce a pulse in the cell, a pulse which will be transmitted to the shaping circuit.
As in the device of FIG. 1, a contactor 32 actuated by the brake pedal of the vehicle controls the restarting of the engine by switching the relay 28 and actuating the starter.
Apart from the operation of the sensor 31, the device of FIG. 2 works exactly like that of FIG. 1. Oscillators, shaping circuit, comparators, timer, etc. are the same elements in the embodiment and in the variant and their operation is identical.
It is obvious that the two devices which have just been described can be fitted without any other on vehicles with electronic ignition and even on diesels. In the case of an electronic ignition, the pulses which are taken at the output of the breaker in a conventional ignition will be delivered by the circuit supplying the coil. In the case of the diesel engine, the pulses delivered by the breaker in a conventional ignition will be taken using a sensor similar to the sensor 31 described with reference to FIG. 2, this sensor being however placed in front of a rotating part of the engine. The adaptations present no problem to those skilled in the art and will therefore not be described in detail.
