EMI2.2
where R1 has the meaning given and R8 is a carboxylic ester or carboxamide group, and cyclization of the azo compound in the presence of alkali, alkali carbonates or acetates to give the pyrazolone and, if appropriate, saponification of the alkoxycarbonyl group and decarboxylation.

The coupling takes place, for example, by gradually adding the aqueous-alkaline solution of the coupling component to the acidic solution of the tetrazonium salt.
According to the present process, the monocarboxylic acid halides thus obtainable are condensed in a molar ratio
2: 1 with hydrazine or diamines of the formula H2N-A1-NH2 or diols of the formula HO-A1-OH.
In the diamines, Al preferably denotes a maximum bicyclic aromatic radical. In this, the two benzene radicals can be linked to one another by a direct bond or a bridge. Suitable bridges are, for example, sulfur or oxygen atoms, imino or lower alkylene groups and the atom groups of the formulas -CO-, -SO2-, -NHCO-, -NH-CONH-, -CH = CH-, -N = N- .
The diaminodiphenyls, in particular those of the formula (VIII), may be mentioned as representatives of bicyclic diamines whose benzene radicals are directly linked to one another.
From the series of diamines whose benzene radicals are linked to one another via a bridge, those of the formula (VII) may be mentioned in particular.
Preferred diols are lower aliphatic diols, it being possible for the alkylene radical between the two HO groups to be interrupted by a hetero atom, for example an oxygen atom. Of particular interest are alkanediols of the formula HO (CH2) nOH (XV) in which n is the number 2-4.
The following diamines and diols may be mentioned as examples: hydrazine ethylenediamine 1,2-propylenediamine ethylene glycol diethylene glycol and the aromatic and heterocyclic diamines mentioned above.
The condensation between the halides of the formula (XIII) and the diamines or diols is expediently carried out in an anhydrous medium. Under this condition, it generally takes place surprisingly easily even at temperatures which are in the boiling range of normal organic solvents, such as toluene, monochlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, trichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene and the like. To accelerate the reaction, it is generally advisable to use an acid-binding agent, such as anhydrous sodium acetate or pyridine. The dyes obtained are partly
crystalline and z. T. amorphous and are mostly obtained in a very good yield and pure state. It is advisable to first remove the acid chlorides obtained from the carboxylic acids. In some cases, however, separation of the acid chlorides can be dispensed with without damage and the condensation can take place immediately after the production of the carboxylic acid chlorides.
The pigments obtained can be converted into metal complexes. Preferred for the formation of metal complexes are those which have metal complex-forming groups or groups which can be converted into such, for example alkoxy groups, but in particular hydroxyl, mercapto, carboxyl, OCH2-COOH or SCH2COOH groups in the o-position to the azo groups. They can be converted into metal complexes by the action of metal-releasing agents, for example zinc- or nickel-releasing, but especially copper-releasing agents. The new dyes are valuable pigments which, in finely divided form, can be used to pigment high molecular weight organic material.
