The present invention relates to a fungicide or acaricide which contains a maleimide derivative as an active component and a maleimide derivative as a component and is effective for protecting fruit trees against parasitic diseases and mites.
N- (4-methylphenyl) dichloromaleimide, N-cyclohexyldichloromaleimide, etc. are known to have fungicidal activity and are effective in combating various plant diseases (see Japanese Patent 12798/1960). However, these dichloromaleimides have proven to be at least partially unsatisfactory for many uses with plants.
So has z. B. N-cyclohexyldichloromaleimide at a concentration of 500 ppm as ineffective against diseases of fruit trees, such as melanosis in citrus fruits, proved. The fungicidal activity of N- (4-methylphenyl) dichloromaleimide is also significantly reduced at lower concentrations and is practically non-existent against melanosis in citrus fruits.
There is therefore a demand for a fungicidal preparation which exerts fungicidal activity at lower concentrations than those required for the maleimide compounds known hitherto and which is effective against a variety of plant diseases, particularly those of fruit trees.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a fungicidal preparation for fruit trees which is effective at low concentrations.
This goal is achieved by the finding according to the invention that N- (4-fluorophenyl) dichloromaleimide is significantly superior to the known maleimides, such as N- (4-methylphenyl) dichloromaleimide and N-cyclohexyl dichloromaleimide, in its fungicidal and acaricidal effectiveness .
N- (4-Fluorophenyl) -2,3-dichloromaleimide melts at 245-246 C and can be prepared by reacting 4-fluoroaniline with dichloromaleic acid, dichloromaleic anhydride or an ester thereof.
Dichloromaleic acid, its anhydride or ester can be produced by various processes. So you can dichloromaleic acid z. B. obtained by oxidation of 3-formyl2,3-dichloroacrylic acid with fuming nitric acid (cf. Ber. 38, 2588-90). Dichloromaleic anhydride can be prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with chlorine in the presence of iron (cf. USSR patent specification 43 419). The esters of dichloromaleic acid are obtained from dichloromaleic acid or anhydride with the corresponding alcohols.
The compound according to the invention is expediently used in combination with customary carriers (diluents), surface-active agents, etc. and can be used in the form of a powder or a wettable powder. It can be used directly by spraying or after suitable dilution.
In the present application, a carrier is understood to be one which can carry the active ingredient to the desired parts of the plant and can be solid or liquid. Suitable solid supports include e.g. Various clays, talc, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, calcium carbonate, white carbon, sawdust, etc. Liquid carriers include solvents or nonsolvents for the active ingredient, and the compound of the present invention can either be dispersed or dissolved therein. Suitable liquid carriers are water, benzene, kerosene, alcohol, acetone, methylnaphthalene, xylenes, etc.
Suitable surface active agents include nonionic surface active agents such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, etc .; cationic agents such as alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and higher alcohol sulfates; amphoteric surfactants such as laurylamine derivatives, betaine derivatives, dodecylaminoethylglycine, etc.
The manner in which the fungicidal and acaricidal preparations according to the invention are formulated is illustrated by the following examples. The additives used and their proportions can of course be varied if necessary.
Unless otherwise stated, all percentages are total%.
example 1
Powder preparation
A mixture of 2% N- (4-fluorophenyl) dichloromaleimide and 98% clay and talc was pulverized, and the resulting fine powder was used as a fungicide or acaricide.
Example 2
Wettable powder preparation 50% N- (4-fluorophenyl) dichloromaleimide, 46% a mixture of and diatomaceous earth, 2% sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate and 2% calcium ligninsulfonate were mixed and pulverized. The obtained fine powder was suspended in water and used as a fungicide or acaricide.
Example 3
Wettable powder preparation
50% N- (4-fluorophenyl) dichloromaleimide, 47% diatomaceous earth, 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate and 2% polyvinyl alcohol were mixed and pulverized. The obtained fine powder was suspended in water and used as a fungicide or acaricide.
When formulating the compound according to the invention as a wettable powder, as in Examples 2 and 3, particular care must be taken with regard to the distribution of the particles of the wettable powder. Wettable powders with about 80% particles of a size below 10M, in particular with about 60% of a size below 5, are particularly effective as fungicidal and acaricidal compounds. In general, as the particle size becomes smaller, the fungicidal effectiveness is increased, but the stability of the compound is proportionally lost. For this reason, wettable powders with too small a particle size are not always suitable.
As is apparent from Example 4, the compound used in the present invention is excellent in increasing the activity and stable even with a small particle size.
As can be seen from the following Tables 2 to 5, the compound according to the invention N- (4-fluorophenyl) dichloromaleimide still exerted a clear effect even at a very low concentration in comparison with other maleimide compounds. The compound is effective for protecting fruit trees against diseases such as scab diseases, melanosis in citrus fruits, the formation of black spots on peaches and Alterpalia leaf spot disease in apple trees, and at the same time offers the fruit trees protection against parasitic mites such as the two-spotted spider mite and the red citrus mite. The compound according to the invention thus has a dual effect as a fungicide and acaricide.
As can be seen from Table 4, the fungicidal action of the compound according to the invention is stable when used outdoors and persists for a relatively long time in comparison with similar compounds, which shows the unique properties of the compound according to the invention.
Also, as shown in Table 1, the compound of the present invention has such a low acute toxicity that it can be used safely. This desirable property makes the fungicide and acaricide suitable for a wide variety of uses.
