Beispiel I
It is known that thermoplastic molding compositions made from linear saturated polyesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids can be processed into moldings. To improve the crystallizability of the polyesters used, nucleating agents are added, e.g. finely divided, solid, inorganic substances. This increases the crystallinity and density of the finished injection-molded parts, which is expressed in an improvement in the dimensional stability and shape stability at higher temperatures. Solid inorganic substances are e.g. Metal oxides, alkaline earth salts, talc, glass powder or metal powder are used. The inorganic substances should have a grain size below 2.
It has also already been proposed to add neutral or partially neutralized montan wax salts or montan wax ester salts to the polyesters as nucleating and mold release agents.
It has now been found that an injection molding compound in granulate form made from linear saturated polyester has particularly favorable properties when an amount of 0.05 is present in an at least partially salted and optionally partially esterified mixture of saturated, predominantly tertiary monocarboxylic acids with 9 to 12 carbon atoms up to 1.5% by weight, based on the polyester, in the particles of the granulate and / or in an amount of 0.01 to 1% by weight, based on the polyester, on the particles of the granulate,
and the injection molding compound has a moisture content below 0.01% by weight and the linear saturated polyester in solution in a solvent consisting of 60% by weight of monohydroxybenzene and 40% by weight of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane 25 "C and at a concentration of the polyester of 1 g dl has a reduced specific viscosity of at least 1.25 dl / g.
Tertiary monocarboxylic acid is understood to mean a monocarboxylic acid whose carboxyl group is bonded to a carbon atom whose three remaining valences are bonded to carbon atoms.
Corresponding injection molding compounds which, in addition to a) the at least partially salt-neutralized mixture of saturated, predominantly tertiary monocarboxylic acids with 9 to 12 carbon atoms, also have very favorable properties, and b) an at least partially salt-neutralized mixture of saturated, straight-chain carboxylic acids with 10 to 18 carbon atoms, however, the total amount of a) and b) is preferably not more than 2.5% by weight, based on the polyester.
When using at least partially salt-neutralized mixtures of saturated, predominantly tertiary monocarboxylic acids with 9 to 12 carbon atoms instead of montanates, one also achieves rapid crystallization and good demoldability without impairment of the mechanical properties, but has the additional advantage that the polyesters treated in this way They are less prone to discoloration at high temperatures, since the acids on which the salts are based are easier to clean and their salts therefore do not contain any resin, like the montan wax salts.
The salts to be used according to the invention can be granulated into the polyester or, preferably, subsequently absorbed onto the finished granulate. The best results are obtained when some of the salts to be used according to the invention are granulated and another part is subsequently applied to the granulate.
Further known additives such as other nucleating agents, processing aids, stabilizers or pigments can be added during the polycondensation or before the granulation. Combinations with montan wax salts are also advantageous.
The at least partially salted and optionally partially esterified mixtures of saturated, predominantly tertiary monocarboxylic acids with 9 to 12 carbon atoms to be used according to the invention are used in amounts from 0.05 to 2.5% by weight, preferably in amounts from 0.15 to 1.5% by weight, particularly preferably in amounts of 0.3 to 1% by weight, based on the polyester, are added.
Polyethylene glycol rephthalate is particularly suitable as polyester. However, other polyesters, e.g. Poly cyclohexane-1,4-dimethylol terephthalate can be used.
Also suitable are polyesters which, in addition to terephthalic acid, contain up to 5% by weight of other aromatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. Tsophthalic acid, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid or adipic acid or as an alcoholic component in addition to ethylene glycol up to 30 mol.-O / o of other aliphatic diols, e.g. 2,2-dimethylpropanediol-1,3 or butanediol-1,4 contain.
Polyesters made from oxycarboxylic acids can also be used. The linear saturated polyesters have a solution in a solvent consisting of 60% by weight of monohydroxybenzene and 40% by weight of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane at 250 ° C. and at a concentration of 1 g per dl reduced specific viscosity of at least 1.25 dl / g. This can be achieved through post-condensation.
The salts to be used according to the invention preferably contain the metals from I to III as cations. Main group of the periodic table, preferably lithium, sodium, potassium, beryllium, magnesium, calcium and aluminum.
Preferably, however, sodium salts are used.
The salts prepared by reaction with 0.1 to 1 equivalent of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or oxide, preferably with 0.25 to 0.9 equivalent of sodium hydroxide solution, are preferably used as the partially neutralized salts.
Ester salts which can be used according to the invention can be obtained by partial esterification of the acids mentioned with up to 0.9 equivalents, preferably 0.5 to 0.8 equivalents, of alcohols having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and subsequent neutralization with oxides or hydroxides of the metals mentioned. Diols are particularly suitable e.g. Ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol and 1,4 butanediol.
The known additives include, for example, inorganic nucleating agents such as alkaline earth carbonates, e.g.
Calcium magnesium carbonate and oxides such as titanium dioxide or aluminum oxide, also talc and aluminum silicates, but above all sodium aluminum silicate are to be expected. They are generally added in an amount of 0 to 2% by weight, preferably in amounts of 0 to 0.6% by weight, based on the polyester.
Further known additives are multifunctional epoxides of the formula
EMI1.1
where R, R1, R2 and R3 denote hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups which can also be connected to one another to form ring structures and which may contain ether or ester groups. Like the abovementioned inorganic solids, these epoxides are generally added in amounts of 0 to 2% by weight, but preferably in amounts of 0 to 0.6% by weight, based on the polyester.
If the salts or ester salts to be used according to the invention are wholly or partly coated on the finished polyester granulate, this not only causes the moldings to crystallize more quickly in the injection mold and makes them easier to remove from the mold, but also provides protection against moisture absorption by the granulate. In order to obtain flawless injection-molded articles, the polyester compound must contain little moisture, less than 0.01% by weight.
When using the granulate, it is necessary to keep the mold at a temperature of at least 110 ° C. in order to achieve crystallization in the injection mold. Rapid crystallization and thus a short injection cycle are achieved at mold temperatures between 1200 and 1500C. Mold temperatures between 135 and 145 "C have proven particularly useful.
For the tests, the injection mold of a program control disk of a washing machine was used, in which the injection molded part was pushed out of the mold by very sharp ejector pins. The injection cycle was determined in which the ejector pins just barely penetrate the finished molded part and the molded part almost falls out of the mold by itself. The weight percentages given relate to the polyethylene glycol terephthalate. The specific viscosities were measured on a 1% solution in monohydroxybenzene / l, l, 2,2-tetrachloroethane at 60:40 at 25 "C.
Example I.
Grains of polyethylene glycol terephthalate with a moisture content below 0.01% by weight and a reduced specific viscosity of 1.40 dl / g were treated for 1 hour with 0.4% by weight of the sodium salts of a mixture of saturated, predominantly tertiary monocarboxylic acids with 9- 12 carbon atoms rolled. The grains coated in this way were homogenized in an extruder at a temperature of 275 ° C., pressed out in wire form in water and granulated.
The granulate was then dried to a moisture content below 0.01% by weight, brought to a reduced specific viscosity of 1.4 dl / g by heating at 240 ° C. for 7 to hours and then with 0.2% by weight / o of the sodium salts according to the invention waxed.
Program control disks (diameter 10 cm) were injection molded from this granulate at cylinder temperatures of 2650C and a mold temperature of 1400C. The total injection molding cycle was 70 seconds. The mold life was chosen so that the ejector pins no longer pressed into the mass when the mold was opened. The surface of the molded parts was excellent. The injection molded parts had no flow skins and a density of 1.371 g / cm3. The sprue was pure white.
The impact strength of the injection molded parts was determined with the drop hammer device described below. The samples had a 50% breaking point of 200 cm.
Drop hammer device:
A 70 X 70 X 4 mm plate is pneumatically clamped on a drop table, the drop hammer (1 kg) is suspended from a stop device and is thus moved to the desired height. The drop hammer is released pneumatically and hits the sample in the center of the clamping ring. If the sample is not penetrated, the drop hammer is held in place by a pneumatically operated catching device when it bounces back.
Ten panels are knocked at several heights and the height at which 50% of the panels break: 50% - breaking point is determined.
Example 2
Polyethylene glycol terephthalate grains with a moisture content of less than 0.01% by weight and a reduced specific viscosity of 1.4 dl / g were treated for 1 hour with 0.4% by weight of a mixture of saturated, predominantly tertiary monocarboxylic acids with 9-12 carbon atoms, the were partially neutralized with 0.8 equivalents of calcium hydroxide, rolled.
Program control disks (diameter 10 cm) were injection molded from this granulate at cylinder temperatures of 2650C and a mold temperature of 1400C. The total injection molding cycle was 60 seconds. The mold life was chosen so that the ejector pins did not press into the mass when the mold was opened. The surface of the injection molded parts was excellent and pure white.
The molded parts had a density of 1.368 g / cm3.
If this example is repeated using the same amount of calcium montanate instead of the calcium salt mentioned, injection molded parts are obtained which have a slight yellow tinge.
