The invention relates to an afterburning and soundproofing device for internal combustion engines.
The invention aims to solve the problem of letting the exhaust gases from internal combustion engines escape into the open air with as little impurities as possible and with as much noise as possible, the effort required for this to be as low as possible and the gas resistance to be as low as possible Not to adversely affect the engine performance.
The invention with which this object is achieved is characterized by the combination of the following features: a) an afterburner arranged in an exhaust pipe, close to the cylinder outlet and provided with fresh air supply elements distributed over the pipe cross-section, b) an afterburner arranged downstream of the afterburner, through an insert in Exhaust pipe formed, neck-shaped storage zone, c) an inner pipe located in the exhaust pipe and located downstream in the gas flow direction, the exhaust pipe is closed at its rear end and its total length is chosen so that at a certain frequency of the exhaust pulses in it a standing one Hauptschallwelie occurs and the inner tube ends at least approximately in a vibration node.
This makes it possible to achieve practically complete afterburning of the exhaust gases and at the same time to achieve very effective sound absorption. This device can be mass-produced inexpensively, has only a low gas resistance and requires little space.
The drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention. Show it:
Fig. 1 is a view of the afterburning and sound damping device, partially in section,
2 shows a section through the afterburner and the stagnation zone.
The afterburning and soundproofing device is located inside a metallic jacket pipe I, which has a curved part 3 u. has an adjoining straight part 4. The connecting piece 5 is connected to the branching piece that is present close to the engine block and from which the exhaust pipes lead to the individual cylinders.
Adjacent to this connection stub 5, there is an afterburner 12 in the inside of the pipe, which serves to subject the hot exhaust gases coming from the engine to afterburning with the supply of fresh air. It is known that the exhaust gases coming from the internal combustion engine still have incompletely burned proportions of gaseous and solid substances which pollute the air. In the afterburner 12, these substances are practically completely burned with the supply of heated fresh air.
In the interior of the slightly conical tube part 10 there are several ribs 16 which are arranged parallel to one another and have a V-shaped cross-section and whose tips 19 are on the inflow side, that is to say at the top. These ribs 16 are hollow and have openings 18 that widen towards the bottom. Between adjacent ribs 16 there are spaces 17 for the throughflow of the exhaust gases. Ribs 16 and spaces 17 thus alternate over the entire cross-sectional area. The ribs 16 are held rigidly in the tube 10. At the contact points of the ribs 10, approximately triangular openings are present in the tube 10, so that openings 18 are formed between the annular space 13 and the ribs. Fresh air can thus get from the annular space 13 into the rib cavities 18, which are open at the bottom.
When the exhaust gases from the cylinders now flow in the direction of arrow A into the spaces 17, fresh air is entrained from the cavities 18, and there is afterburning in the post-combustion zone 11 adjacent to the cavities. The fresh air is in the annular cavity 22 between the outer tube 20 and the jacket tube 1 are preheated and carried away from the rib openings 18 by injector action. The amount of fresh air is selected in such a way that self-ignition occurs in the post-combustion zone without catalysts. The combustion temperature is above 950ob, so that even hard-to-burn gaseous and solid components, in particular the undesired carbon oxide, are burned in this post-combustion zone.
The part of the pipe 1 adjoining the post-combustion zone 11 widens so that a certain expansion of the gas occurs here. At a distance A which is 1.9 to 2.3 times the clear diameter of the inner tube 10, preferably about 2.1 times, there is a damming sleeve 14. In a practical embodiment which has proven itself, the inner diameter was Inner tube 76.6 mm and the distance A = 160 mm. Between the post-combustion zone and the damming sleeve 14 which narrows the flow cross-section, there is a damming zone 21 or vortex chamber in which the combustion process is carried out completely before the exhaust gases continue to flow.
The installation of this damming sleeve 14 results in a certain vortex formation, which promotes uniform combustion, and at the same time this leads to sound insulation. The damming sleeve 14 consists of a cylindrical ring part 25 running coaxially with the pipe 1, an adjoining cone 27 widening in the flow direction and a fastening ring 28 which rests against the pipe 1 and is welded to it. The distance A is measured between the X lower edge of the ribs 16 and the edge 26 of the ring part 25.
The inside diameter of the ring part 25 is 74-82%, preferably about 78%, of the inside diameter of the pipe 1 in the damming zone 21. i) The axial length of the cylindrical ring part 25 and the cone 27 together are about 2/3 the diameter of the ring part 25th
The fresh air supplied to the afterburner 12 thus flows in the direction of arrow B - that is, in countercurrent to the exhaust gases flowing in the direction of arrow A. At a distance from the damming sleeve 14, the outer tube 20 forms a widening annular channel 24 which is connected to a fresh air inlet connector.
In the subsequent, rectilinear part of the casing tube 1, an inner tube 2 of smaller diameter is located in its interior, so that an annular gap 7 is formed between the casing tube 1 and the inner tube which is coaxial with it. The jacket tube 1 is closed at its rear end by a tightly welded disk 9. The inner tube 2 projects a short end piece 6 beyond the jacket tube 1 at the rear. The inner tube 2 is supported in the vicinity of its front end by narrow retaining webs 15 in the jacket tube 1. The inner tube 2 is open at both ends and thus contains a cylindri's cavity 8 in its interior, the cross-sectional area of which is approximately half of the jacket tube 1.
The length of the MantelrohTes 1 is chosen so that a standing sound wave occurs in it. In order to achieve a good sound-damping effect, it should be noted that the inner tube 2 ends at a vibration or shaft junction. The distance C is therefore chosen so that it is half the stretched distance from the rear end of the jacket tube 1 to the valve seats of the engine. The explanation for the surprisingly good sound attenuation is seen in the fact that the sound waves propagating in the space 7 are reflected by the disk 9, and since they have the same wavelength but opposite pressure distribution, they interfere with each other and thereby extinguish or at least greatly weaken each other.
It has been empirically established that in conventional internal combustion engines for motor vehicles a pronounced main noise of about 4.8 m occurs at normal speed range. Half the wavelength is thus approximately 2.4 m, which corresponds approximately to the length of the jacket pipe 1 plus the connecting piece up to the valve seats, in order to obtain the best possible sound absorption. Details can be found in patent specification No. 478 335.
In addition, it was also established through experiments that a wavelength of about 610 mm can be assumed for the pulsating gas flow. Another finding consists in choosing the total length of the inner tube 2 protruding into the jacket tube 1 so that it is a multiple of half the gas wavelength, namely 1.22 m.
In order to obtain both good sound insulation and the lowest possible gas resistance for the exhaust gases escaping into the open, the cross-sectional area of the inner pipe 2 should not be more than 60% and not less than 30% of the cross-sectional area of the jacket pipe 1.
