In Product Engineering, 21. Juni 1965, Seite 59 bis 68 (Artikel Hew to evaluate the Rigid plastic foams von H.

Process for the production of pressure-resistant, highly heat-resistant foams: from mixtures of bituminous compounds and synthetic resins based on novolaks
In technology, solid foams are increasingly being used for heat and cold insulation as well as acoustic shielding, i.e. Materials with a cellular structure and low density are required. The requirements that are placed on these products are different and depend on the intended use (living space insulation against heat loss, sound insulation of rooms, insulation of cold rooms and steam pipes, etc.).
The aim is generally the greatest possible insulation capacity with good mechanical resistance, high compressive strength, high dimensional stability, good heat resistance as well as low water vapor absorption and low vapor permeability.
The foams with a low density that have been commercially available to date are generally made from synthetic resins such as polystyrene, polyurethane, epoxy resins, silicones and phenolic resins. Some of them have excellent properties, but are naturally relatively expensive. In the case of the cheaper foams of this group, the thermal resistance and the mechanical resistance also leave something to be desired.
Attempts to produce usable foams from bituminous materials, such as the residues (pitch and bitumen) or natural asphalt remaining after processing tar and petroleum, have so far been unsuccessful. Due to the plastic properties of the raw materials, solid foams made from bituminous materials do not have sufficient dimensional stability from a certain temperature and are also generally relatively brittle.
The invention is therefore based on the object of producing inexpensive and yet pressure-resistant, dimensionally stable and heat and chemical resistant foams from mixtures of bituminous compounds and synthetic resins based on novolaks in a technically advanced manner.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that mixtures of bituminous masses and Novo hooks are foamed at a temperature of 50 to 2100C, a viscosity of 50 to 5000 cP and in the absence of free acid simultaneously with gases released during the curing process or with added known blowing agents and hardened. The foaming u. The hardening process takes place preferably at a temperature of 170 to 1900C and a viscosity of 100 to 1000 cP.
The inventive conditions for a favorable course of the foaming and hardening process viscosity of 50 to 5000 cP at 150 to 2100C and the absence of free acid - can be set by a brief thermal pretreatment at 280 to 3500C by or by adding tar bases from boiling point 160 to 1900C to the mixture of bituminous mass, novolak and optionally modifying agents or by a short-term, preferably 15 to 30 minutes, pretreatment of said mixture with 0.1 to 0.3 parts of hexamethylenetetramine to 100 parts of mixture of bituminous mass and novolak at one Temperature from 150 to 1160 C.
The bituminous masses are natural asphalt, petroleum bitumens or preferably coal tars, lignite tars or wood tars or, particularly preferably, coal tar pitches, lignite tar pitches, wood pitch or aromatic-rich petroleum bitumens or mixtures of these bituminous masses in amounts of 50 to 80%, preferably 65 to 75%, calculated on the mixture of bituminous mass and novolak, used. According to the invention, pitches with a softening point according to Krämer-Sarnow of 30 to 1200C, preferably coal tar pitches with softening points of 60 to 850C, are used.
The novolaks used are those based on phenol, cresols and xylenols in amounts of 20 to 50%, preferably 25 to 35%, calculated on the mixture of bituminous mass and novolak. According to the invention, novolaks with Krämer-Sarnow softening points of 70 to 1100 ° C. are used in conjunction with known novolak crosslinking agents and known blowing agents, preferably with hexamethylenetetramine as crosslinking and blowing agent in one.
The foaming of the mixtures, which is preferably done automatically by the gases released during the hardening process, but also by adding known blowing agents, e.g. Azo compounds, urea or the like. Can be brought about, can be additionally supported by introducing or blowing in finely divided steam or gases.
The mechanical properties of the foams produced can, if desired, be improved by thermal aftertreatment at 200 to 3000C for several hours.
The mixtures to be foamed can be mixed with fillers such as talc, asbestos, carbon black or the like, or modified with polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or similar substances.
The cell structure can be influenced by adding stabilizers, emulsifying agents and wetting agents.
It has been shown that the procedure according to the invention gives foams with good insulation properties, good mechanical resistance and extremely high temperature resistance up to 3500 ° C. and good chemical resistance. The foams produced are not flammable.
In the case of pressureless expansion, according to the invention, foams with largely open pores are produced; in closed vessels, foams with predominantly closed pores.
The production of solid foams from mixtures of bituminous masses and thermoplastic synthetic resins is already known (cf. French Patent 1 065 257), but the foams obtainable in this way naturally have only very limited heat resistance. In French patent specification 1 065 257 (page 2, right column, line 2/3) there is also a brief, general indication that, in the sense of this known proposal, heat-curable synthetic resins should also be used instead of the thermoplastic synthetic resins claimed per se. Compared to the technically simple procedure according to the invention, however, the aforementioned method is extremely cumbersome.
According to French patent specification 1 065 257, the bituminous masses and - if necessary, the resin - are ground and mixed in the solid state after the addition of a plasticizer and a foaming agent to form a paste that is poured into molds and by heat treatment under pressure and subsequent cooling into a product is transferred, which, due to its plasticity at a higher temperature, can be expanded over a longer period of time by slow and careful heating. The expansion is caused by the fact that the gas released from the foamer during the heating process slowly expands the softening mass. The foaming process is extremely long and takes a few days.
According to the proposal of the invention, however, the mixing of bituminous mass and novolak takes place in the liquid state. The hardening process runs parallel to the foaming, so that after the expansion process has ended, a product is present with completely different chemical and physical properties than before the process, and indeed the properties are surprisingly much more favorable than the expert would for a combination of the two components Consideration of the known properties of phenolic resin foam and foams made from bituminous compounds - could have expected. In Product Engineering, June 21, 1965, pages 59 to 68 (article Hew to evaluate the Rigid plastic foams by H.
Gerstin) on page 60 (middle column, lines 2 to 6), attention is drawn to the extreme friability, low compressive strength and the tendency of phenolic resin foams to corrode metals. Even if the general reference to the production of foams from bituminous compositions and thermosetting resins is found in French patent specification 1,065,257, the literature reference in Product Englneering shows that it is not only not obvious to the person skilled in the art to use a phenolic resin as the thermosetting resin on the contrary, phenolic resins were clearly contraindicated for this purpose.
The fact that foams made from bituminous compounds have not proven to be successful at all has already been mentioned above.
In contrast, foams produced according to the invention do not show the slightest friability, they are pressure-resistant and do not attack metals, since they do not contain any free acid. The fact that the foams according to the invention are in no way inferior to the phenolic resin foam in terms of heat resistance is surprising, since foams made from bituminous compositions are known to have only extremely low heat resistance.
The decisive advantages of the method according to the invention are in particular the chemical change in the properties of the mixture of bituminous mass and novolak used for foaming and the expansion process which is extremely simple and requires only a short time (a few minutes).
The following examples illustrate some preferred embodiments of the invention (parts given are parts by weight).
