Riechstoffkompositionen
EMI1.1

B. Ascaridol oder a,a'-Azo-bis-isobutyronitril initiiert werden.
Fragrance compositions
It is known to use buccu leaf oil as a flavor component in the manufacture of certain artificial fruit flavors, in particular in the manufacture of cassis flavor (flavor of black currants).
It has now been found that the previously unknown p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one of the formula which occurs in very small amounts in buccu leaf oil
EMI1.1
is an essential odor or aroma carrier of the oil mentioned. It was possible to synthesize p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one in pure form. It is a colorless liquid which, in addition to its interesting cassis aroma properties, also has fragrance properties.
This compound can accordingly be used as a fragrance for the production of fragrance compositions, such as perfumes, or
for perfuming technical products, e.g. B. of solid and liquid detergents, synthetic detergents, aerosols or cosmetic products of all kinds, (z. B.
Soaps).
On the other hand, bucco leaf oil is generally not suitable for perfuming purposes, if only for reasons of price.
The odor notes of p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one can be described as onion-like, sulphurous and at the same time fruity (cassis), cassis bud-like and green. The substance is particularly suitable for fragrance compositions with novel flower bouquets, especially those with notes reminiscent of jasmine, lilac or hyacinth. On the one hand, thiolone gives such compositions a very pleasant top note, on the other hand, it considerably increases their diffusivity. Furthermore, p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one is suitable as a component of compositions with woody, chypre, iris or animal notes.
The content of the thiolone in fragrance compositions or in the perfumed products can vary within wide limits, e.g. B. between 0.005 to 5% by weight.
The invention accordingly relates to fragrance compositions characterized by a content of a previously unknown compound, p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one.
The invention relates in particular to odoriferous compositions with a content of synthetically produced p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one that is free from the additions occurring in natural buccal oil.
These admixtures are in particular monoterpene hydrocarbons, such as a-pinene, p-pinene, camphene, myrcene, a-terpinene, (+ p-limonene, y-terpinene, p-cymene, terpene ketones such as (+> menthone, (-)) -Isomen- thon, (+ SIsopulegon, (-tIsopulegon, (-tPulegon, or around terpene alcohols, such as terpineol (+), diosphenol or -diosphenol.

500 p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one can be obtained without difficulty from readily available starting material, namely by reacting pulegone or isopulegone in the presence of a base with hydrogen sulfide under anhydrous conditions.
Suitable bases are, for example: Inorganic bases, e.g. B. alkali metal hydroxides, such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, alkaline earth metal hydroxides, such as. B. calcium hydroxide, organic bases such as amines such as alkylamines, e.g. B. diethylamine or triethylamine, heterocyclic amines such as piperidine etc.
The implementation of the starting compound (Pulegon or
Isopulegon) in the presence of the bases mentioned is expediently carried out in the presence of a solvent. Suitable solvents are e.g. B. alcohols such as alkanols, e.g. B. methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, with ethanol being preferred, or ethers such as diethyl ether (preferred), or diisopropyl ether.
If desired, however, it is also possible to work in the absence of a solvent. The reaction temperature is expediently between about 0 "C and 100" C; a range between about 40 "C and 60" C is preferred. The duration of the reaction depends on the reaction temperature. It is z. B. for a reaction temperature of 40 "C to 60" C generally two hours.
The reaction can optionally be carried out by adding catalytic amounts of a radical generator, such as. B. ascaridol or a, a'-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile can be initiated.
The reaction can take place at normal pressure or conveniently at elevated pressure, e.g. B. 10 atmospheres can be carried out, since the reaction proceeds with a reduction in volume.
The quantitative ratio of the starting compound to hydrogen sulfide can be varied within wide limits; it is preferred to use at least 1 mole of hydrogen sulfide per mole of starting compound. However, the hydrogen sulfide can also be used in excess.
The reaction of the starting compound with hydrogen sulfide is conveniently initiated by adding the "starting compound or the solution of this starting compound in an anhydrous solvent in the presence of a base, which can be added as such or dissolved in an abovementioned solvent, at a temperature below the boiling point hydrogen sulfide is added to this and heated to the reaction temperature in a suitable pressure vessel.
The reaction of the starting compound with hydrogen sulfide can result in new centers of asymmetry, and as a result the reaction product can be obtained in the stereoisomeric forms that this makes possible.
The reaction product can be isolated from the reaction mixture by customary methods; z. B. by distilling off the solvent, optionally filtration of the elemental sulfur formed from the remaining mixture and fractional distillation, which can be separated from unreacted starting compound.
In the synthesis examples below, the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
example 1
114.0 g of technical pulegon with a pulegon content of approx. 93% are dissolved in 150 ml of technically absolute ethanol and a solution of 7.5 g of potassium hydroxide in 50 ml of ethanol is added. Hydrogen sulphide is passed into the solution, which has cooled to -75 ", until the increase in volume is 40 ml. The cold solution is immediately transferred to a suitable, previously cooled pressure vessel and left to stand for 16 hours, the temperature gradually rising to room temperature the autoclave is heated to internal temperature of 50 ° for 2 hours; the pressure rises to a maximum of 7.4 atmospheres. After the reaction has ended, the mixture is cooled to room temperature and 140 ml of ethanol are distilled off from the reaction mixture in vacuo on a rotary evaporator.
The residue (153 g) is taken up in 250 ml of ether and washed twice with 100 ml of saturated sodium chloride solution each time and then with twice 100 ml of water until neutral. The ether solution is dried and then freed from the solvent. The residue (122.4 g) is fractionally distilled. The p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one obtained (102 g, 73%) boils at 74.75 / 0.1 mmHg, n2DO = 1.4951 for the mixture of two stereoisomers in a ratio of about 4: 1. (The cis-p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one can be separated from the trans-p-menthan-8-thiol3-one by means of gas chromatography). Smell: green, fruity, suitable for cassis, minty with a characteristic sulfurous note.
Example 2
7.6 g of isopulegone are dissolved in 50 ml of absolute ethanol and treated with 0.5 g of KOH. The solution is cooled to -75 ". Excess H2S is condensed in at low temperature, the mixture is left in the autoclave at room temperature overnight and heated to 50 ° C. inside the autoclave for a further 2 hours the next day. The maximum pressure achieved is 7.5 atm. After cooling, the solution is diluted with 200 ml of ether and washed neutral with saturated sodium chloride solution. After drying and removal of the solvent, the residue (10.1 g) is fractionally distilled in vacuo to give 7.2 g of the same stereoisomer mixture as in Example 1 , but in a ratio of 5: 4 (instead of 4 1).
