Process for refrigerating a fluid
The present invention relates to a process for refrigerating a fluid.
This process can be applied in particular to the cooling of air with a view to its liquefaction.
The method which is the subject of the invention is characterized by the fact that a gas is compressed in a compressor, that the compressed gas is divided into two streams, the first of which is carried through a closed engine cycle comprising the heating of the gas by a source. of external heat, its expansion in a turbine driving the compressor, its cooling by an external source and its reintroduction into the compressor, the gas leaving the power turbine releasing heat to the compressed gas before heating the latter by the source of external heat, and that in the second of said streams a closed refrigeration cycle comprising cooling of the gas by an external source, its expansion in a second turbine, its reheating by the fluid to be cooled and its reintroduction into the compressor, is passed through,
the compressed gas after its cooling by the external source being cooled by the expanded gas coming from the second turbine after this gas has been reheated by the fluid to be cooled.
The cycles of this refrigeration process being closed, it has many advantages, especially when it is applied to the liquefaction of a gas, due to the absence of atmospheric contamination, the possibility of an arbitrary choice. the pressures and densities of the working gas, the heat transfer characteristics and the boiling point or critical temperature. In this process, one is not hampered in determining the working gas by the characteristics of the working gas. fluid to be cooled, for example of a gas to be liquefied, since the only condition is that the working gas is capable of providing the desired refrigeration effect.
The drawing represents, schematically by way of example, an installation for implementing the -procédé. In this installation, the working gas is helium. Helium enters a compressor 10 at a pressure of 12.65 kg / cm2 and an ambient temperature of 2950 K. The helium is discharged from the high pressure side of the compressor at a pressure of 18.75 kg / cm2. and at a temperature of 2440 K. The flow coming from the outlet duct 11 of the compressor is divided into two currents, that is to say a current which flows in a motor circuit 12, and a current which flows in a refrigeration circuit 13.
The gas from the engine circuit first passes through a path of an exchanger 14, where it is heated to 8290 K and then through a coil-heat exchanger of a combustion device 15, 16, which serves to heat the gas up to 9220 K. The gas then expands in a turbine 17 driving the compressor 10. At the outlet of the turbine 17, the pressure is 13.30 kg / cm2 and the temperature 8320 K. The gas passes then through the other channel of the exchanger 14 where it is cooled to approximately the compressor outlet temperature. Finally, the gas passes through a cooler 18 from where it is returned to the compressor 10.
The cooler 18 can be cooled by water or by air.
The current which flows through the line -13, first passes through a cooling device 19, where it is cooled by water up to 295 K, the pressure drop being slight and having a value of about 0.35 kg / cm2. The current then passes through a path of an exchanger 20, where it is cooled to 78 "K. The gas then passes into a turbine 21, in which it expands, the temperature dropping to 71". K. The turbine 21 drives a generator 22 through a shaft 23. The stream of cooled gas then passes through a heat exchanger coil 24 which cools the fluid to be cooled which flows through the coil 26.
Coming from coil 24, the low pressure helium passes through the other path of exchanger 20, where it cools the helium on the high pressure side.
The helium then completes its refrigeration circuit by returning to the compressor at a pressure of 12.65 kg / cm2. The fluid to be cooled may be air to be liquefied and in order to separate its components by rectification.
An electric starter motor 34 can be coupled to the compressor by a coupling 36. A coupling 37 allows the turbine 21 to be coupled directly with the compressor 10.
The installation described is started up by first supplying water or cooling air to the devices 18 and 19, supplying gas or air to be condensed to the coil 26 and then making turn the compressor 10 by means of the motor 34. Once the compressor has reached its speed, heat is supplied to the coil 15, so that the turbine 17 does the work of driving the compressor, and can stop the power supply to the starter motor 34 and disengage said motor from the shaft 35. When the refrigeration coils 24, 26 have a temperature which is reduced to the appropriate value, the air components liquefy by passing through the coil 26.
By using helium, hydrogen or neon as the working fluid, gases such as methane, oxygen, argon and nitrogen can be liquefied at atmospheric pressure.
In order to obtain very low temperatures by means of the installation described, the efficiency of the exchanger 20 must be as high as possible. For example when the temperatures to be obtained by means of the refrigeration circuit are at least of the order of that of liquid nitrogen, that is to say less than 780 K, it is necessary that the efficiency of the exchanger 20 be of the order of 990 / o. For the liquefaction of the air by using helium as the working fluid, the efficiency of the exchanger 20 must be greater than 970 / o. If it was a liquefaction of methane with nitrogen as the working fluid, the efficiency of the exchanger 20 must not be less than 95 / o but this constitutes the lower limit for the work in cryogenic interval.
The efficiency of the exchanger 14 may be lower than that of the exchanger 20 because the loss is easily compensated by providing more heat to the engine cycle. The efficiency of the exchanger 14 will be above 90% and preferably much higher.
In the installation described, to obtain a temperature of 710 K at the outlet of the turbine 21 and a temperature of 77 K at the outlet of the device 24, 26 it is necessary to have a pressure ratio of about 1.5, using helium. If helium is used to liquefy hydrogen, the necessary pressure ratio can still be obtained since their boiling points differ by 16 K and the described process will operate at a much higher temperature ratio. small at such temperatures. A pressure ratio of 2.4 would be sufficient, with the same efficiency of the installation. In the process described, achieving reasonable yields, the maximum pressure ratio, with helium for hydrogen liquefaction, would be less than 2.5.
Throughout an interval of 1220 K-1 K, the optimum pressure ratio should be between 1.25 and 3.0. If nitrogen was used as the working fluid up to 122 "K, the optimum pressure ratio would increase to 2.425.
