Process for the preparation of water-insoluble styryl dyes The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of water-insoluble styryl dyes of the formula
EMI0001.0000
wherein X is a cyano, carbalkoxy or arylsulfone group, Y1 and Y2 are a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or alkoxy group or phenoxy group, R is an alkyl, phenalkyl, cyanoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, acyloxyalkyl group or a radical of the formula - ASB, A denotes an alkylene group and B denotes an aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic radical, characterized in that a styryl compound of the formula
EMI0001.0007
where R 'is an alkyl, phenalkyl,
Cyanoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or acyloryalkyl group or a radical of the formula -AZ and Z denotes a halogen atom or an arylsulfonyloxy group and A, X, Y1 and Y., which have the specified meaning, with an aryl, aralkyl or a heterocyclic mercaptan condensed.
The starting materials used are advantageously compounds of the formula
EMI0001.0012
EMI0001.0013
wherein X. is a hydrogen or halogen atom and Z is a halogen atom or an arylsulfonyloxy group and X, Y1, Y2, R and A are the same as above.
The -SB radicals can be derived from the following mercaptans: phenyl mercaptan, 2-, 3- or 4-chlorophenyl mercaptan, 2, 4- or 2,5-dichlorophenyl mercaptan, 2-, 3- or 4-methylphenyl mercaptan, 2,4 - or 2,5-dimethylphenyl mercaptan, 2-, 3- or 4-methoxyphenyl mercaptan, 2,4- or 2,5-dimethoxyphenyl mercaptan, 2- or 4-nitrophenyl mercaptan, 2- or 4-carbomethoxyphenyl mercaptan, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 2-mercapto -6-chlorobenzothiazole, 2-mercapto-4-chlorobenzothiazole, 2-mercapto-4-methyl-benzthiazole, 2-mercapto-6-methyl-benzothiazole, 2-mercapto-6-methory-benzothiazole, 2-mercapto -6-ethoxy-benzothiazole, 2-mercapto-benzoxazole, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole.
The reaction with the aryl mercaptan is conveniently carried out in an organic solvent, preferably alcohol, in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, alkali metal alcoholate or alkali metal carbonate at elevated temperature, conveniently at the boiling point of the alcohol. It is advantageous to use at least one mole of the alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate per mole of the halogen compound.
The new dyes, which are characterized by high melting points, are particularly suitable after conversion into a finely divided form, eg. B. by grinding, pasting, reprecipitation, etc. for dyeing and printing of synthetic fibers, such as cellulose acetate, but especially aromatic poly esters. You get it drive after the usual Färber, z. B. from a dye liquor containing a fine dispersion of the dye and conveniently a dispersant, at temperatures close to 100 C, optionally with the addition of a swelling agent, or at temperatures above 100 C using excess pressure, pure, strong, greenish yellow dye genes that are characterized by excellent light and sublimation fastness.
The new dyes also have the advantage of only slightly staining wool and other fibers in the dyebath. They are therefore well suited for dyeing polyester, wool or z. B. polyester-triacetate blended fabrics. They can also be used for mass coloring.
The dyes according to the invention are also suitable for dyeing by the so-called thermosol process, according to which the fabric with an aqueous dispersion of the dye, which advantageously contains 1 to 500/0 urea and a thickener, in particular sodium alginate, preferably at temperatures of Impregnated at most 60 C and squeezed off as usual. It is advisable to squeeze in such a way that the impregnated product retains 50 to 100% of its original weight in dyeing liquid. To fix the dye, the fabric impregnated in this way is expediently dried, e.g. B. in a warm air stream, heated to temperatures of over 100 C, for example between 180 to 210 C.
The just mentioned thermosol process for dyeing blended fabrics made of polyester fibers and cellulose fibers, in particular cotton, is of particular interest. In this case, in addition to the dye according to the invention, the padding liquid also contains dyes suitable for dyeing cotton, for example vat dyes. When using the latter, the padded fabric must be treated after the heat treatment with an aqueous-alkaline solution of a reducing agent customary in vat dyeing. The dyeings and prints obtained are distinguished by good general fastness properties, in particular light fastness and sublimation fastness.

is wet-ground with 2 parts of a 50% strength aqueous solution of sulphite cellulose waste liquor and dried.
This dye preparation is mixed with 40 parts of a 10% strength aqueous solution of a condensation product of octadecyl alcohol with 20 moles of ethylene oxide and 4 parts of a 40% strength acetic acid solution are added. A dyebath of 4000 parts is prepared from it by diluting it with water.
In this bath one goes at 50 with 100 parts of a purified polyester fiber, increases the tempe temperature in half an hour to 120 to 130 and dyes one hour in a closed vessel at this tempe temperature. It is then rinsed well. A greenish yellow dyeing of excellent lightfastness and sublimation fastness is obtained.
