a) l,l,l-Trimethylolpropan-tris-(hexahydrophthalat)

Use of polyadducts from polyepoxides and dicarboxylic acid anhydrides for the production of electrical outdoor insulators
The present invention relates to the use of polyadducts of polyepoxides having more than one epoxy group per molecule and cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydrides for the production of electrical outdoor insulators.
It is known to use organic materials such as porcelain for the manufacture of outdoor insulation. However, porcelain insulators have several disadvantages. They break easily, have low tensile strengths and, due to the manufacturing process, show large manufacturing tolerances.
It is also known from the article by K. Meyerhans in Kunststoffe, Vol. 43, 1953, Issue 10, pages 387-392, Araldit (D-Casting Resin B - that is a polyglyc dyl ether based on 4.4 ' - Dihydroxydiphenyl dimethylmethane (= bisphenol A) - to harden with phthalic anhydride while shaping and to use the resulting products as electrical insulation material.
For the production of outdoor insulators, such combinations have not proven themselves due to their inadequate weather resistance, as can be seen in particular from the German Auslegeschrift 1 187 700.
It is also known from German Auslegeschrift 1 187 700 to use a hardened plastic material made of a cycloalophatic 1,2-epoxy compound with an epoxy equivalent greater than 1 and a cycloaliphatic or aliphatic polycarboxylic acid anhydride as hardening agent for the production of weather-resistant, electrical outdoor insulators. Compared to plastics made from polyglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A and cyclic carboxylic acid anhydrides, the plastics obtained according to the German Auslegeschrift have improved arc resistance, good tracking resistance and improved weather resistance. However, a major disadvantage of these plastics is their insufficient mechanical strength.
For example, the flexural strengths and impact strengths of these products are significantly lower than those of curing products made from polyglycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols and cyclic carboxylic acid anhydrides. (See K. Jellinek, Newer Developments in the Field of Epoxy Resins in Kunststoffe 55th Volume, 1965, Issue 2, page 82, right column).
Another disadvantage of the process of German Auslegeschrift 1 187 700 is the fact that aromatic polycarboxylic anhydrides, such as. B. phthalic anhydride, are not suitable as hardeners for the cycloaliphatic polyepoxides with regard to the proposed use, as can be seen in particular from Example 5 of this published publication. Such moldings show a deterioration in the electrical properties after weathering.
The object of the present invention was to find a weather-resistant insulating material for the production of outdoor insulators, for the production of which the inexpensive technical crude product phthalic anhydride, which is available in excellent purity, can be used. The object was achieved by using very special cycloaliphatic polyepoxides for the production of the insulating materials.
It was surprising, especially with regard to the German Auslegeschrift 1 187 700 already cited, that the cycloaliphatic epoxides to be used according to the invention, cured with phthalic anhydride, resulted in a plastic material that was not only weather-resistant, lightfast, creep-resistant and arc-resistant, but also excellent exhibited mechanical strengths.
The invention thus relates to the use according to the invention of polyadducts of glycidyl carboxylic acid esters of the formula

wherein A is an at least 2-valent radical of an aliphatic hydrocarbon optionally interrupted by oxygen and / or cycloaliphatic rings or an at least 2-valent radical of a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1-3 C atoms and n is a number between 2 to 6, the glycidyl carboxylic acid ester radicals, which are identical or different, being used with phthalic anhydride.
Of preferred interest for the production of weather-resistant outdoor insulators are polyglycidylcarboxylic acid esters I of the formula given above, in which the two carboxylic acid ester groups are in the 1,2-position to one another and in which A is the 24-valent radical of an aliphatic hydrocarbon with 2-10 carbon atoms , which can be interrupted by oxygen atoms or by a cyclohexyl ring, furthermore the divalent radical of a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon with 6-15 C atoms, R is hydrogen and n is a number of 24.
The cycloaliphatic polyglycidyl carboxylic acid esters to be used according to the invention can have been prepared according to the process of German Auslegeschrift 1,211,117. Polycarboxylic acids are then reacted with excess epichlorohydrin in the presence of thioethers and / or sulfonium salts as catalysts at temperatures between 30 and 90 ° C. to give the corresponding 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl carboxylic acid esters, then with solid potassium or sodium hydroxide 40-85 "C and then after distilling off the excess epichlorohydrin in an inert solvent at temperatures up to 85 0C with a deficiency of concentrated alkali hydroxide solution, based on the chlorine content in the reaction product, heated to remove the remaining chlorine.
The polycarboxylic acids necessary for the preparation of the polyglycidyl carboxylic acid esters to be used according to the invention are esterification products of one mole of a 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid or de, optionally substituted by alkyl groups with 1-3 C atoms, preferably by methyl ren anhydride with 1 mole of an aliphatic polyol or a cycloaliphatic polyol optionally interrupted by n oxygen atoms and / or cycloaliphatic rings, where n corresponds to the number of hydroxyl groups in the polyol.
The esterification takes place according to known processes.

For the use of the described polyepoxides for the production of electrical outdoor insulators, however, it is not necessary that the chemical composition of the glycidyl esters must completely correspond to the specified formulas.
Like all synthetic resins produced on an industrial scale, the polyepoxides described can deviate from the ideal composition, e.g. B. in that small proportions of hydroxyl groups and organically bound halogen are present, which result from incomplete conversion or side reactions in the production of the polyepoxides.
The electrical outdoor insulators can be manufactured using the usual processing methods for polyepoxides with more than one epoxide group per molecule. In the simplest case, the glycidyl ester to be used according to the invention is heated to temperatures between 80 and 150 ° C., the phthalic anhydride is added with stirring and the mixture thus obtained is poured into z. B. Metal molds that may have previously been treated with release agents. Curing takes place by heating the mold to temperatures between 80 and 180 ° C. for a time between a few minutes and several hours. At any point in time before curing, additives such as fillers, plasticizers, dyes, pigments, flame-retardant substances, mold release agents and other additives can optionally be added.
For example, the following materials can be used as fillers: rock powder, quartz powder, chalk, barite, aluminum oxide, aluminum oxide trihydrate.
Furthermore, reinforcement materials such as. B. tissue, fibers, chips, strands of z. B. glass, clay and textile can be incorporated. To shorten the curing times, accelerators, such as. B. tertiary amines, such as dimethylbenzylamine, boron trifluoride adducts, alkali metal phenolates or similarly effective substances are added, for example mono- or polyepoxides, whose epoxy group or groups are bonded to a nitrogen atom, such as N, N-bis (2,3epoxypropyl) -aniline.
The cycloaliphatic polyglycidyl carboxylic acid esters given by formula (products I-VIII) are obtained, for example, in accordance with the instructions given below for product III and in accordance with the conditions of the process of German Auslegeschrift 1,211,117.
a) l, l, l-trimethylolpropane-tris- (hexahydrophthalate)
In a three-necked flask (with stirrer, internal thermometer, reflux condenser and drying tube) 1388 g of hexahydrophthalic anhydride (9 mol) are melted with exclusion of atmospheric moisture. With stirring and the greatest possible exclusion of moisture, 403 g of 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane (3 mol) are then added within about 1 hour at an internal temperature of 130-135 ° C. in such large proportions that the internal temperature increases despite the exothermic reaction not increased significantly. The mixture is then heated to 150 ° C. and stirred at this temperature for a further 3 hours. After pouring onto a drying tray, the almost colorless reaction product quickly solidifies to a solid, crystal-clear substance.
Yield: 1762 g = 98.5% by weight o / o d. Th .; Acid number: 284 (Th. 282); Content of alcoholic OH groups <0.2 O / o.
b) Conversion of 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane-trs- (hexa-hydrophthalate) to 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane-tris- [2'- (carbo-2 ", 3" -epoxypropoxy) -hexahydrobenzoatej
The mixture of 1762 g of crushed 1,1,1-tri methylolpropane-tris (hexahydrophthalate) = 2.95 mol, 4100 g of epichlorohydrin = 44.3 mol and 8.9 g of 2-hydroxy-ethyl-ethyl sulfide is 18-19 Stirred for hours at an internal temperature of 60 CC. To determine the conversion, a small part of the solution is then freed from excess epichlorohydrin by incipient distillation up to a bath temperature of 120 ° C. and a pressure of 13 torr. The distillation residue contains 12.3 wt / o chlorine (Th. 12.2 wt / o).
To the product in the reaction vessel, 356 g (8.9 mol) of NaOH (flake form) are added in small proportions and at equal time intervals over the course of 2 hours for dehydrohalogenation at an internal temperature of 60 ° C. while stirring as intensively as possible. After the reaction has subsided (approx.
10-15 min. After stirring in the last portion of NaOH) and cooling to 40 ° C., the water formed during the reaction and the excess epichlorohydrin are distilled off under reduced pressure, finally at a sump temperature of 100 ° C. and 13 torr.
With appropriate cooling of the distillation receiver, more than 90% of the theoretical amount by weight of the excess epichlorohydrin used can be separated from the distillate and reused.
The distillation residue from the dehydrohalogenation is stirred with 2260 g of benzene and washed thoroughly with 2500 ml of water to remove the sodium chloride. The chlorine content of the distillation residue - determined in a small sample - was 2.97% by weight.
To eliminate the remaining chlorine, the benzene solution is heated to the boil and, after traces of water have been removed by distillation, it is added dropwise and continuously with 136 g of 500% sodium hydroxide solution within 5-6 hours while stirring vigorously. During the addition of the sodium hydroxide solution, the water is removed azeotropically with the aid of a water separator. The benzene solution, cooled to room temperature, is then washed with water or sodium chloride solution and the benzene is distilled off, finally up to a bottom temperature of 140 ° C. and a pressure of 12 torr. The colorless to light yellow reaction product at 140 ° C. is then filtered off with suction through a suitable filter.

The outdoor insulators obtained according to the invention show excellent arc resistance and tracking resistance before and after weathering. They are still lightfast. In addition, they also have excellent mechanical properties, such as high flexural strengths and impact strengths.
The sum of these properties has so far not been achieved by the plastic materials according to the state of the art with regard to the stated purpose.

100 parts by weight of a triglycidyl ester (product III) were heated to 120 ° C. with stirring and mixed at this temperature with 200 parts by weight of quartz flour and 0.1 part by weight of dimethylbenzylamine.
37 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride were then added and the mixture was continued at 120 ° C. for 5 minutes to dissolve completely. Part of the curable casting resin composition obtained in this way (sample A) was cast to form a 10 kV post insulator with embedded brass fittings, and part to standard rods of 120 × 15 × 10 mm and cured at 140 ° C. for 24 hours.
For sample B, the same procedure as for sample A was used, but instead of the triglycidyl ester (product III), a diglycidether prepared by reacting 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylHdimethyl methane and epichlorohydrin in the presence of alkali with an epoxide equivalent weight of 360 was used.
In sample C, 100 parts by weight of the 3, 4-epoxyhexahydrobenzal-3 ', 4'-epoxy-1', 1'-bis (oxymethyl) cyclohexane with 270 parts by weight of quartz powder and described in Example 1 of French patent 1 233 231 then mixed with 5 parts by weight of endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, also at 120.degree.
The hardening of the standard dust and the insulator was carried out at 140 ° C. within a period of 24 hours.
The isolators were exposed to the elements for a long time. While the insulators with the composition corresponding to samples A and C remained without any change in surface or tracking resistance, the insulator with the composition corresponding to sample B showed a roughening of the surface, discoloration, deposits of washed-out filler and deterioration in tracking resistance.
The arc resistance according to DIN 53 484, the tracking resistance according to DIN 53 480, the flexural strength according to DIN 53 452 and the impact strength according to DIN 53 543 were determined on the standard rods produced. The values obtained are contained in the following table: Non-creep impact arc current bending strength Hardening strength strength strength kp sample conditions level level kp / cm2 cmlcm2 A 24h 140 CL 4 KA3c 1450 11.5 B 24h 140 * CL 1 KAl 1380 10.8

For sample E, the procedure was as for sample C of example 1, but 83 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride were used instead of 85 parts by weight of endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (sample E).
The insulator with the composition corresponding to sample D showed the same good weather resistance as the insulators A and C of example 1, while the insulator with the composition corresponding to sample E showed a deterioration in the electrical properties after weathering.
The results of the standard dimensions are compiled in the following table: light-creep-impact arc-current- bending toughness hardening strength strength strength kp sample conditions level level kpicm2 cm / cme D 24h 140 C L4 KA3c 1360 9.8 E 24h. 1400-C L 1 KA 2 740 4.0

Then, also at 130 ° C., 30 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride were stirred in.
The curable casting resin compound thus obtained was cast into a 110 kV suspension insulator with embedded steel fittings and cured at 140 ° C. for 24 hours.
The isolator has been exposed to the elements for a long time. Thereafter, it showed no change in the surface, the tracking resistance and the arc resistance.
Example 4
To produce a glass fiber-reinforced insulator, a strand of glass rovings with metal thimbles attached to the ends was impregnated with a mixture of 100 parts by weight of a diglycidyl ester (product I) and 28 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride at 120 ° C. and poured into a metal mold. The insulator obtained after a curing time of 24 hours at 120 ° C. showed good weather resistance. When subjected to mechanical tensile stress, the insulator did not show any cracking before breakage, since the extensibility of the polyaddition product was greater than the extensibility of the fiberglass strand.
If the same glass fiber-reinforced insulator is produced using the curable casting resin composition with the composition corresponding to sample C of Example 1, omitting the addition of powdered quartz, the insulator showed cracks under mechanical tensile stress before reaching the breaking load.
