I'écart aux positions , l'erreur secondaire .

Watch hairspring with zero thermal coefficient
Watch springs are characterized by four parameters well known to watch specialists: the thermal coefficient, the isochronism coefficient.
The difference in positions, the secondary error.
The thermal coefficient is a fundamental parameter which characterizes the sensitivity of the balance spring to variations in ambient temperature. The other three parameters will not be described here because they do not directly relate to the invention.
The thermal coefficient is a function of the thermo-elastic coefficient of the alloys used for the manufacture of the hairspring, this thermo-elastic coefficient characterizing the influence of temperature variations on the value of the elastic modulus of the alloys.
One of the goals sought during the manufacture of a watch balance spring is to obtain a zero thermal coefficient. This object can be achieved by using an alloy having.
under the operating conditions of the hairspring, a zero thermoelastic coefficient.
One solution to the problem thus posed consists in using, for the manufacture of these balance-springs, a type of alloy known under the name of Elinvar, registered trademark.
The nominal composition of such an alloy is as follows:
C 0.7 0 / o Cr 10 O / o
Si 0.3 <) / o W 3.5 0 / o
Mn 1.9 0 / o Fe complement
Ni 32 O / o
In order to increase the elasticity characteristics of watch springs, it has been necessary to develop alloys having an elastic limit appreciably greater than that of Elinvar, and known under the name of Durinval, registered trademark.
One of the typical compositions of these alloys is as follows:
C minimum Cr 5.4 O / o
If minimum Ti 2.5 o / o
Mn minimum Al 1 / o
Ni 42 ^ / o Fe complement
Durinvals are distinguished from Elinvars mainly by their hardening mechanism. In Elinvar, in fact, the mechanical characteristics are obtained by an appropriate heat treatment during which the precipitation of chromium carbides occurs, while in the case of Durinval it is the precipitation of titanium and aluminum nickelides which occurs. This essential difference in the hardening mechanisms of the two types of alloys is of course directly linked to the differences in composition which can be observed by comparing the two analyzes cited above.
Regardless of their upper elastic limit, the Durinval, of course, like the Elinvar, have a substantially zero thermoelastic coefficient in the vicinity of ambient temperature.
However, they cannot be used for the manufacture of watch balance springs which are no longer mechanical but electric. In fact, electric watch balance springs must be non-magnetic at room temperature, whereas alloys
Durinval are, under these conditions, strongly magnetic: their Curie point, that is to say the temperature at which the alloy passes from the ferromagnetic state to the paramagnetic state, is close to 1500.
It is also known that molybdenum decreases the Curie point of a ferronickel with a determined nickel content. This is shown in particular in the work by R.M. Bozorth entitled ferromagnetism. However, according to this work, austenitic molybdenum ferronickels of the y-domain are ferromagnetic at room temperature when their molybdenum content is less than about 10 o / o Mo.
However, it is not possible to resort to a massive addition of any element, such as molybdenum, to lower the Curie point below the ambient temperature, because such a massive addition would dilute the coefficient anomaly. thermoelastic to such an extent that it would no longer be possible to obtain at the same time a low or zero thermoelastic coefficient.
Alloys are also known, the matrix of which is essentially a ferronickel containing 7 to 12 0 / o of molybdenum. These alloys harden by precipitation thanks to molybdenum, when the Mo content is greater than 7 to 8 / o. In these alloys, molybdenum is obligatory, while the elements provided as a hardening agent (Al-Ti-V-Nb-Ta) can be limited to 0.01 / n each. The hardening method involved is therefore linked to the mandatory presence of a minimum content of 7 O / o of molybdenum, the other so-called hardening elements being only an adjuvant to molybdenum.
In addition. in these alloys we do not seek the elimination of ferromagnetism since it is planned to use them for tuning forks which are generally maintained by electromagnetic method.
The present invention aims to provide a family of alloys having the usual characteristics of conventional Durinval but which are non-magnetic at room temperature.
To achieve this goal, it was necessary to have recourse simultaneously to two kinds of means, one suitable for ensuring a low or zero thermoelastic coefficient, and the other suitable for lowering the Curie point of the alloy below the temperature range of use. Studies have led to the development of an alloy whose compositions are precisely defined, and which necessarily contains chromium and molybdenum at the same time. aluminum and titanium.
The subject of the invention is a watch hairspring with a zero thermal coefficient, characterized in that it is manufactured with an Fe, Ni alloy. Cr, Mo, Ai, Ti. non-magnetic at room temperature, consisting by weight of 36.5 to 39.5a / o nickel, 1.5 to 4.5 oxo of chromium, 1.5 to 3o of molybdenum, 0.75 to 1.25 0 / o aluminum, 2 to 30% titanium, the remainder being iron, with minimal amounts of carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus.
By way of example of an alloy according to the invention, mention may be made of that having, by weight, the following composition: carbon 0.005 / o, silicon 0.34 0 / o, manganese 0.169 / o, nickel 38.40 / o, chromium 3.370 / o, molybdenum 20 / o, titanium 2.460 / o. aluminum 0.96 / o, iron 52.29 0 / o, the remainder being sulfur and phosphorus, whose Curie point is less than 180 and which is practically non-magnetic at room temperature with a zero thermoelastic coefficient.
The studies from which the invention results have made it possible to determine that, in order to obtain a set of properties similar to those of the alloy cited above as an example, the contents of the constituent elements of the alloy should be adjusted within the following limits:
- from 36.5 to 39.5 o / o for nickel
- from 1.5 to 4.5 o / o for chromium
- from 1.5 to 3 o / o for molybdenum
- from 0.75 to 1.25 / o for aluminum
- from 2 to 3 O / o for titanium the remainder being constituted by iron, carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus being present at the minimum contents.
To obtain the best results within the composition ranges indicated above, account must be taken of the sometimes contradictory influences of the variations in the content of the various elements on the displacement of the Curie point. In fact, in the field of composition envisaged, additions of nickel raise the Curie point while additions of chromium and molybdenum. titanium and aluminum lower it.
On the other hand, the influence of the hardening mode of the alloy during its use on the displacement of the Curie point must also be taken into consideration. In fact, the precipitation of titanium and aluminum nickelides relatively depletes the matrix of the alloy in nickel and is therefore accompanied by a lowering of the Curie point.
Of course, the invention is not limited by the details of implementation which have just been described.
These could be modified without departing from the scope of the invention.
