<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Wax for perforating tools lined with hard metal and for tools subjected to similar forces".
A steel intended for punching tools and tools subjected to similar forces, and lined with hard metal, must meet various requirements, which seemed hardly possible to satisfy in that these tools, when fixing the blades of hard metal - fixing which is generally done by soldering - must be heated to about 1100 C and be cooled slowly in order to avoid harmful tensions, without being able to be subsequently subjected to an improvement heat treatment, because this treatment would compromise the solder bonding.
The steel must be suitably machinable by tools which remove chips, and therefore have, in the annealed state, a strength of 100 kg / mm2 at most and in addition it must have a high resistance to wear. and consequently reach, after the

heating to about 1100 C for fixing the hard metal gaskets and after slow cooling in air or in a package, a minimum resistance of about 150 kg / mm2. However, the resistance should not significantly exceed 180 kg / mm2, so that the steel is not too brittle and still has the necessary resistance to repeated impacts.
These difficulties which are opposed to the resolution of the problem of the creation of an appropriate steel are still very notably increased by the fact that the choice of a steel containing rare and expensive elements cannot come into play. account for economic reasons.
According to the invention, the problem appears to be solved by the fact that one uses for the manufacture of drilling tools lined with hard metal and tools subjected to similar forces, a steel which contains: - 0.40 to 0.60% carbon - 1 to 2.50% manganese
0.50 to 1% silicon - 3 to 6.50 chromium, the rest being iron with the usual impurities -
The requirements are fully met by this steel. Thus, for example, a steel containing 0.405C, 1.08% Mn, 0.61% Si and 3.31 Cr, and the composition of which therefore falls at the lower limit of the range. indicated, a, after annealing for four hours at 740 C and subsequent cooling in the furnace, a resistance of approximately 90 kg / mm2.
By heating to 1100 C and cooling in air, its resistance is approximately 175 kg / mmL, after cooling from 1100 C in packaging of charcoal powder on the other hand, approximately 155 kg / mm2. A steel containing 0.46% C, 2.10% Mn, 0.99% Si and 6.50% Cr and which is, by its composition, at the upper limit of the range indicated, a, after annealing of four hours at 740 C and subsequent cooling in the oven,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a resistance of 90 to 95 kg / mm2.
After heating to 1100 ° C. and cooling in air, its resistance is approximately 175 kg / mm2 and, after cooling from 1100 ° C. in a coal pack, approximately 170 kg / mm2. Therefore, both at the lower limit and at the upper limit of the alloy range indicated, the machinability and wear resistance are obtained:
However, the steel may additionally contain, for example with a view to increasing the wear resistance, carbide-forming elements such as molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, titanium, tantalum, niobium or analogues in amounts of up to about 2% as well as an excess of carbon corresponding to that which the added carbide former is capable of binding.
The use of this steel is not limited to drilling tools lined with hard metal, cutting tools and tools undergoing similar forces, but it can also be advantageous for other tools which must be machined before being lined with hard metal and which must then have a high resistance.
