Image transmission device
Image transmission devices are already known comprising a reader exploring the surface of the image to be transmitted and supplying an electrical signal in response to the differences in tones of the image to be transmitted, means for transmitting this signal and a receiver. for the transmitted signal, this receiver comprising means for reproducing the scanned image on a medium.
In the known devices, the reproduction means are generally based on the emission of a light beam modulated in intensity as a function of the signal received and concentrated to form a light point on a photosensitive surface moving relative to the latter in a manner corresponding to the reader's exploration trace. The photosensitive surface is generally photographic paper which must be protected from stray light before and during reproduction and which must then be developed in the usual way.
The object of the present invention is to allow the transmission of images in a simple and rapid manner thanks to the fact that said reproduction means comprise a nozzle supplied with tinted material and providing a jet of this material in the direction of the support provided for the reproduction of the material. image, the jet being subjected to an electric field dependent on the signal received to modify the quantity of tinted material reaching the support.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
The transmission device shown in FIG. 1 comprises a transmitter device A and a receiver device B.
The emitting device A comprises a cylinder 1 driven in rotation by a motor M via a drive shaft 2. A toothed wheel 3 is rigidly fixed to said shaft 2 and connected by a chain 4 to a second toothed wheel 5 integral in rotation with a worm 6. A nut 7 carrying a read head 8 is mounted on the worm 6 and can move along the latter in a direction parallel to the cylinder 1.
The reading head 8 comprises a light source 9 and a converging optical system 10 for directing a light brush on the image to be transmitted, wound around the cylinder 1.
The light 11 diffused in the direction of a photoconductive element 13 varies in intensity depending on whether the point 12 of the image struck by the light brush is light or dark. The variations in the intensity of the light are thus transformed into variations in electrical voltage and brought by a line 14 to a transmitter device 15 supplying a signal corresponding to a starting line 16.
The transmitter device A is connected to a receiver device B, for example by a telegraph line 17.
This receiving device B comprises a metal cylinder 21 driven in rotation by a motor M2 via a shaft 22. A toothed wheel 23 integral in rotation with said shaft 22 is connected by a chain 24 to a toothed wheel 25 integral in rotation. of a worm 26. A movable part 27 carrying a writing head 28 is mounted on the worm 26 and can move in a direction parallel to the cylinder 21.
The movements of the cylinders 1 and 21 driven by the motors Mt, respectively M2, are synchronous by virtue of a synchronization link shown diagrammatically by lines 29 and 30.
The writing head 28 of the type described in Swiss patents No. 451212 of February 13, 1967 and No. 452559 of February 13, 1967, in the name of the holder, is shown in detail in FIG. 2 and comprises in particular a reservoir 31 containing ink 32 which must be projected onto the paper wound around the cylinder 21. The ink 32 is supplied from the reservoir 31 by a pipe 33 to a pump 34 which sends this ink under a slight pressure to a nozzle 35 of a sender 36. The pressure supplied by pump 34 almost compensates for the surface tension of the ink in nozzle 35, but is however too low to cause the flow on its own. ink through the nozzle 35.
On the other hand, as soon as a sufficient potential difference exists between the cylinder 21 and the nozzle 35, the ink is torn from the end of the nozzle 35 in the form of fine droplets constituting the ink jet 42. In front of the nozzle orifice 35 are arranged an accelerating electrode 44 and two electrostatic deflection plates 37 and 38.
An electrical control unit 39 is intended to supply voltages to the nozzle 35. A second electrical control unit 43, included in the read head 28 is intended to supply voltages to the deflection plates 37 and 38 to cause a deflection. electrostatic ink jet 42. This deflected ink jet 42 ends up on a target 40 having an evacuation duct 41 for returning the ink to the reservoir 31.
As it is healthy, in the writing heads of the kind represented in FIG. 2, the ink jet is made up of a series of ink droplets. The succession of these ink droplets or particles is very rapid and in general an emission frequency of at least 3000 droplets per second is obtained. By taking into account the dimensions of each point formed by a droplet, it is possible to provide for a lateral displacement of the writing head of 0.2 mm per revolution of cylinder 1. A definition of five points per millimeter linearly is thus obtained, or 25 points per mm2. With the frequency indicated for the emission of the ink particles and a peripheral speed of 600 mm / sec, it is seen that it is possible to reproduce approximately 1.25 cm2 of image per second.
When the device described is intended for the reproduction of texts or technical drawings, it is possible to be satisfied with an all or nothing reproduction, that is to say without semitones. In this case, the blanks are obtained by the absence of the jet 42 when it is deflected on the target 40, while for the black portions, the jet is not deflected and reaches the paper placed on the cylinder 21.
In the majority of cases, it is desired to be able to transmit images presenting halftones, in particular photographs, FIG. 3 relates to the obtaining of the semitones by the receiving device B, shown in FIG. 2.
Fig. 3 shows different shapes of the electric field applied to the electrodes 37 and 38 in order to obtain blacks and lights, and also halftones, respectively.
The curve a comprises two portions a1 and a2. For the al portion, the transverse electric field deflects the jet at target 40, so that the exposed paper surface remains white. For portion a2, the transverse field is zero, and the jet strikes the surface of the paper to produce a dark tint.
The curve b of FIG. 3 shows that the field applied to electrodes 37 and 38 can be alternating and rectangular in shape. As in the previous case, the presence of the field gives a white reproduction, and the absence a black reproduction. As the black and white periods alternate rapidly and are of the same duration, on average a gray reproduction is obtained.
Curve c illustrates the possibility of rendering a gray very light, because the periods c1 corresponding to white are very long compared to the periods c2 corresponding to black.
It is clear that a color reproduction could also be obtained, for example, by using several heads each emitting an ink jet of a determined hue, each of the heads being controlled according to the hue to be reproduced, which can be done using several read heads each chosen in a specific color.
