Use of esters of ethane tetracarboxylic acid or propane tetracarboxylic acid or their
Substitution products as an ultraviolet light absorbing agent
The invention relates to the use of esters of ethane tetracarboxylic acid or propane tetracarboxylic acid or their substitution products according to the formulas
EMI1.1
in which Ri to Rs are identical or different and represent hydrogen atoms or unsubstituted or halogen-, hydroxyl- or nitro-substituted alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic groups and R1 in the formula 1II can also mean an alkyloxyaryl radical, as an ultraviolet light absorbent.
In addition to monofunctional alcohols, polyfunctional hydroxy compounds can also be used to prepare the esters.
The esters to be used according to the invention absorb the ultraviolet light in solvents as well as in plastics, paints and the other media to be protected against UV light with high intensity and very favorable selectivity. Please refer to curves 1 / I for this purpose. Since the compounds to be used according to the invention are colorless and do not discolour even when exposed to light, they can be used in particular for transparent products. Even after prolonged exposure to light containing ultraviolet rays, the products stabilized against UV radiation remain clear and colorless.
Since the physical properties of the products such as B. Solubility and melting point change by varying the various substituents, the range of applications is very large. A particular advantage of using these esters is their good inherent thermal stability, which means they can still be processed even at relatively high temperatures. The fact that these esters do not change the color of the products to be protected result in advantageous uses for both transparent and pigmented products. The compatibility of these esters is excellent, as is their chemical stability. The low odor is particularly advantageous for processing.
Due to the properties described here, these esters can be used practically universally for stabilizing organic substances against UV radiation.
The use of these esters has proven to be particularly favorable for processing in plastics. They give the plastic parts in which they are incorporated excellent lightfastness. When processing in plastics, the very good inherent stability and the universal compatibility of these esters have proven to be particularly favorable. It has also been shown that plastic parts stabilized in this way do not show any blooming and, in addition to the advantages already outlined above, have very good printability.
If the organic substances to be stabilized against UV radiation are plastic pastes, their viscosity is not changed by the use of these esters.
The group of esters to be used according to the invention contains a number of representatives which have no harmful effect on the human organism. With regard to these properties, there are special areas of application such. B. in products that are suitable for food packaging, or in the manufacture of pastes, ointments and oils to protect the skin.
Because of their excellent compatibility, esters to be used according to the invention can be conveniently incorporated into paints. Lacquers produced in this way provide excellent protection against ultraviolet rays and protect both transparent and pigmented lacquer films against fading and also against other associated disadvantageous properties.
A further field of application is, for example, the use according to the invention of the esters mentioned for stabilizing printing inks against UV-S radiation. Here, too, there is a wide range of applications for the light stabilizers, not least because of their very good compatibility and the resulting viscosity.
The esters to be used according to the invention can be prepared by known processes.
The following table lists some examples of esters which can be used according to the invention:
