Description
Verkehrsschildern, erfolgreich verwenden.

Use of a substance for the production of light-reflecting surfaces
It is known to paint ceramic articles, in particular made of porcelain, to achieve color effects with enamel paints and to sprinkle the paint with water-white or colored glass bodies while it is still sticky.
Furthermore, shiny metallic patterns are produced on celluloid by applying a slurry of metal powders, for example aluminum or copper, in a solvent to celluloid and possibly polishing.
Sequins for garments made of hardened gelatine, celluloid or homelike masses, which are coated with silver-plated glass fragments, have also been described.
The invention now relates to the use of silicon carbide, preferably dark-colored silicon carbide, for the production of light-reflecting surfaces of the most varied of types. This makes it possible to improve an industrial-scale product for the production of reflective surfaces, for example in road construction for road surfaces To use illuminating pedestrians or objects on the roadway. However, silicon carbide is also suitable for road delimitation devices or markings (posts, curbs, central or edge strips, bridge piers or road-delimiting structures). With the same success it can also be used for runways of aircraft or wherever reflective surfaces are required.
For the purposes outlined, grain sizes of 0.1 to 15 mm have proven to be particularly advantageous. The silicon carbide is expediently either worked into the concrete or the tar or asphalt layer with or without a binder, or applied to the hardened surface by sprinkling or rolling.
When used on wall surfaces, it is advantageous to add the granulated silicon carbide to the plaster compound or to rub it into the fresh plaster or to apply it to the hardened plaster with a conventional binding agent or paint. A whole area or parts of it can be treated in this way, as required.
The use of silicon carbide has the advantage that, in contrast to known reflective materials, it is abrasion-resistant. It is very surprising that a very good reflectivity of incident light is guaranteed in darkness or in fog. Furthermore, it could not be foreseen that, especially when embedded in asphalt, the reflectivity would not be reduced and would be retained even after long use by vehicles.
Furthermore, silicon carbide can also be used in plastics or synthetic resins, for example polyvinyl chloride, epoxy resins, silicones, or in other binders such as water glass or various types of varnish for the production of reflective signs, e.g. Traffic signs, use successfully.
