The main patent describes various routes to the 2-methylquinolylbenzothiazoles which are used as starting materials for the present invention. The named starting materials and other substances described here are, if no sulfo groups are present, with phthalic anhydride or a derivative here of either in an inert organic solvent such as o-dichlorobenzene or in a solvent amide,
such as dimethylformamide or dimethylacetamide, or condensed in a mixture of such solvents, whereupon sulfonation of the If the starting materials for the new quinophthalones contain sulfo groups, they are preferably condensed in the presence of a solvent amide in order to obtain satisfactory yields and product qualities.
The preferred process can be defined as one for the preparation of the new dyes in which more than 1 mole of phthalic anhydride or a derivative thereof is condensed with 1 mole of a compound containing at least one sulfo group and of the formula

X here denotes hydrogen or methyl, Y denotes hydrogen or SO3M, Z denotes hydrogen, methyl or SO3M, and B denotes hydrogen as in the main patent. According to the present invention, the groups X, Y and Z can have the above meaning and B, in addition to hydrogen, also mean Cl, Br, OH, or NR1R2, in which R,
