AS Nr. 1126298) bzw. Walölsäuren und Cetylalkohol (brit. PS Nr.

Method for increasing the shelf life of cement The invention relates to a method for increasing the shelf life of cement by adding a carboxyl group-free hydrophobing agent with a long hydrophobic residue and a functional group, which combines with the cement.
It is known that the properties of cement, concrete or mortar can be improved by adding additives. The type of additives used depends on which properties are to be particularly improved.
For example, water-repellent substances or mixtures of substances have already been added to the mixture of cement and additives when concrete or mortar is mixed, i.e. at the beginning of processing, based on the assumption that such additives can make the hardened concrete or mortar impermeable to water .
Salts of oleic acid (German PS No. 342404), salts of fatty acids (German PS No. 512876), fats or fatty acids (German PS number 576766) are used as additives. , Stearic acid or its salts (German PS No. 599 851), oils and fats (German PS No. 604 3-l0), higher molecular fatty acids (German PS No. 643 5 = 16) and ammonium salts of fatty acids (German PS No. 671 897).
From the Austrian PS No. 176173 a method for improving the strength properties and reducing the water permeability of hydraulic binders has become known, which consists in adding small amounts of a wetting agent based on sulfonic acid compounds to the mixture of binders and aggregates.
Additives for improving the grindability of cement clinkers have become known from the USA patents Nos. 2,383,891 and 21,397,886. These grinding aids consist of an aliphatic chain of 4 to 12 carbon atoms, which has at least two OH groups and is also bound to sulfate, sulfonic acid or sulfonates, or
from a primary amino alcohol. In addition, these additives should not impair the shelf life of the cement.
Finally, it is also known to add special water repellants to the cement during its production so that the fresh cement, which has been ground in the normal production process, can be stored for as long as possible before processing, i.e. does not harden when left in the air. Such water-repellent substances which act as hydrophobing agents have so far mostly been selected from compounds which contain a carboxyl or carboxylate group and a hydrophobic radical.
Known waterproofing agents of this type are a mixture of oleic acid and chlorinated cresols (German PS No. 1 109 587), a mixture of a specific stearin, namely a stearin with an iodine number less than 2.0 and cetyl alcohol (German AS No. 1 126298) or whale oil acids and cetyl alcohol (British PS No.
830 861), as well as naphthenic acids, oleic acid or other higher fatty acids and their water-soluble salts, oxidized petroleum or oxidized paraffin (synthetic fatty and naplithenic acids) and similar substances (: <Silikattechnik>, 1957, p. 534; 1959 , 556).
Furthermore, it is already known to add a compound free of carboxyl or carboxylate groups to the cement in order to increase its shelf life and which has a different functional group on the hydrophobic residue. Known waterproofing agents of this second type are, for.
B. sulfonates. So describes the Dt. PS No. 1 125 338 an additive in the form of a mixture of an oleic and / or fatty acid and an oleophilic petroleum sulfonate, which is supposed to give the cement mixture a certain toughness, a high early strength and a rapid initial setting, and which also gives the cement hydrophobic properties.
The invention relates to a process for increasing the shelf life of cement by adding a hydrophobing agent which combines with the cement and which is free of carbo-oxyl groups and has a long hydrophobic residue and a functional group, which is characterized in that a long-chain amine is added to the cement as a hydrophobing agent .
The mentioned long hydrophobic radical can be a branched and; 'or substituted aliphatic or aliphatic-aromatic radical. The amine used is preferably stearylamine.
The water repellent used in the process according to the invention is distinguished from all previously known water repellent agents by a surprisingly superior effectiveness. It can be assumed that its functional group (amine group) is firmly linked to the cement micelles by adsorption, with the aliphatic chain then protruding as a water-repellent residue from the adduct formed by the adsorption.
As a result, a water-repellent molecular film forms around the zemetite micelles, which prevents the access of moisture to the micelles. This process not only has to be a purely physical adsorption, but chemical adsorption processes (eg complex formation) can also play a role.
The hydrophobic agent can be added to the cement as a mixture with long-chain, optionally branched and / or substituted aliphatic or aliphatic-aromatic acids or acidic compounds.
These acids can be synthetic fatty acids or the naturally occurring mixture of fatty acids of vegetable or animal origin, namely from coconut oil, palm kernel oil, palm oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, cotton oil, tallow. Hard fat, oil and oil from animal waste fats of various origins as well as montan and wax acids.
Together with the basic components of the cement, they form a molecular film consisting of water-insoluble salts, which supports the effect of the water-repellent molecular film formed by the amines. The mixture of the additives is expediently distributed in the cement as quickly as possible so that extensive distribution is achieved before the salt is ent. In addition, the acidic strength of the acidic compounds should not be too great, so that the salt forms as slowly as possible.
The idea of the invention will now be explained on some examples: Unsuitable additives, such as. B. some Langkettiaen alcohols let the cement sink after a few seconds or minutes when it is applied to water, ie during the swimming test. The cements treated with conventional fatty acids or salts of fatty acids show signs of sedimentation in a relatively short time. On the other hand, cells which are treated according to the invention with a stearylamine or similar compounds are free of such significant sedimentation symptoms even after storage for several weeks.
The shelf life can be determined on the basis of ignition losses. For this purpose, samples of cement are stored in open dishes under defined conditions in the air and after a certain period of time the weight loss that occurred after the samples were annealed is determined.
Table 1 below shows the results of investigations into the shelf life of cements that have been treated with various water repellants. The absolute values of the ignition losses are given as a percentage of the initial weight for the fresh samples (0 days) and the difference values between the ignition losses of the stored and the associated fresh samples found after the respective time periods for the deposited samples. This difference value: is a measure of the moisture absorption before the storage time.
