Les composés I, présentent un intérêt industriel certain, notamment, ils peuvent être utilisés comme intermédiaires dans la préparation d'hormones stéroïdes. Ainsi, ils peuvent être utilisés dans la synthèse de 136-Y gona-1,3,5(10)-triènes.
Le procédé de préparation des composés I, qui fait l'objet de l'invention, se trouve résumé sur le schéma réactionnel annexé et est caractérisé en ce que l'on traite le 1,5-dioxo 4-(carboxyméthyl) 7as-Y 5,6,7,7a-tétrahy- droindane optiquement actif II, Y représentant un radi cal alcoyle inférieur, par un borohydrure de métal alcalin pour former le 1s-hydroxy 4-(carboxyméthyl)-5-oxo 7as- Y 5,6,7,7a-tétrahydroindane III, soumet ledit composé III, à une hydrogénation catalytique en utilisant un catalyseur à base de palladium, traite le produit de cette réduction par un agent d'estérification pour former la lactone du l 6-R10 4-(carboxyméthyl)-5-hydroxy 7as-Y 3aα
, 4s,7,7a-tétrahydroindane IV, RI représentant le reste d'un acide organique carboxylique comportant de 1 à 10 atomes de carbone, et traite ladite lactone IV, par une base alcaline en milieu hydroalcoolique pour former le 1(3 -hydroxy 4 - (carboxyméthyl - 5 - oxo 7ap-Y 3aα,4s,5,6,7,7a-hexahydroindane optiquement actif I.
Les composés optiquement actifs II, peuvent être préparés selon la méthode décrite dans le brevet fran çais No 1481978, ou bien par mise en application de cette méthode.
Le procédé de l'invention est exécuté avantageuse ment comme suit a) le borohydrure de métal alcalin est le borohydrure de sodium, de potassium ou de lithium employé en quantité stochiométrique ; b) le catalyseur à base de palladium se présente sous forme de talc palladié, la réaction étant effectuée en milieu eau -acétone<B>;</B> c) l'agent d'estérification est tel que défini plus haut. L'exemple suivant illustre une exécution du procédé selon l'invention.
Exemple I S-hydroxy 4-carboxyméthyl 5-oxo 7as-méthyl 3aα,4s,5,6,7,7a-hexahydroindane dextrogyre [I,Y = CH3] Stade A : I S - hydroxy 4 - (carboxyméthyl) -5 - oxo las - méthyl 5,6,7,7a-tétrahydroindane [III avec Y = CH3] On dissout sous atmosphère d'azote 6,75 g de 1,5- dioxo 4-(carboxyméthyl) 7a5-méthyl 5,6,7,7a-tétrahydro- indane dextrogyre [II, Y = CH3], produit préparé sui vant le procédé du brevet français No 1481978, dans la quantité juste nécessaire de solution aqueuse 2N de soude (15,2 cm3 environ).
On refroidit la solution vers 0o C, introduit en dix minutes environ une solution de 0,310g d'hydroborure de sodium titrant 95% dans 1,5 cm3 d'eau froide. On agite encore cinq minutes après la fin de l'introduction, puis acidifie par une solution aqueuse concentrée d'acide chlorhydrique. On garde une heure à 00 C, essore, lave à l'eau glacée, sèche et obtient 6,64 g de 1p-hydroxy 4-(carboxy- méthyl)-5-oxo 7a(-méthyl 5,6,7,7a-tétrahydroindane F. = 1940 C.
Un échantillon de ce produit est purifié par cristallisation dans un mélange d'acétate d'éthyle et d'al cool, puis par cristallisation dans l'eau, F. =1940 C, [a] D = -f- 320 1 (c = 0,5 0/0 , éthanol).

Stade B : Lactone du 1(-acétoxy 4-carboxyméthyl-5- hydroxy 7a(-méthyl 3aα,4(,7,7a-tétrahydro- indane [IV avec Y = CH3 et RI = COCH3] <I>a) Hydrogénation catalytique</I> Dans un récipient à hydrogéner on dissout 6,625 g de 1p-hydroxy 4-(carboxyméthyl) 5-oxo 7a(-méthyl 5,6,7,7a- tétrahydroindane dextrogyre dans un mélange de 25 cm3 d'acétone et de 6,5 cm3 d'eau, ajoute 1,5 g de talc palla- dié à 1,9 % de palladium, purge l'appareil puis agite sous atmosphère d'hydrogène à température ambiante jusqu'à fin d'absorption de l'hydrogène.
On absorbe ainsi la quantité d'hydrogène théorique en sept heures. On élimine le catalyseur par filtration, puis concentre à sec le filtrat. b) Formation de la lactone: On ajoute au résidu 1,4 g d'acétate de sodium anhy dre et 50 cm3 d'anhydride acétique puis porte au reflux et le maintient pendant deux heures.
On concentre à sec sous pression réduite, ajoute au résidu un mélange de benzène et d'éther, lave la solution successivement à l'eau glacée, avec une solution aqueuse saturée de bicarbonate de sodium puis à l'eau glacée. On sèche la solution et la concentre à sec. Le résidu est purifié par chromatographie sur une colonne de gel de silice. Par élution à l'aide de benzène-éther (75 : 25), on obtient 0,620 g de lactone du 1(-acétoxy 4- carboxyméthyl 5-hydroxy 7a(-méthyl 3aα,4(,7,7a-tétra- hydroindane, F.=125 C, [a] D = -I- 600 1 (c = 0,60/0, chloroforme).

On refroidit à 00, C, ajoute goutte à goutte une solution aqueuse con centrée d'acide chlorhydrique jusqu'à pH =1, sature la solution par du sulfate d'ammonium, extrait la phase aqueuse à l'acétate d'éthyle, réunit les extractions, sèche la solution obtenue et la concentre à sec sous pression réduite. Le résidu est empâté à chaud dans un mélange d'éther éthylique et d'éther isopropylique. Après essorage et séchage, on obtient 0,675 g de 1(3- hydroxy 4-(carboxyméthyl)-5-oxo 7a(-méthyl 3a ,4(3,5; 6,7,7a-hexahydroindane dextrogyre, F. =1500 C, [a] D = 411, 1 (c = 1 %, éthanol) (ce produit contient 4,2 % d'eau).
