EMI1.1
worin A einen ss-Carbamyl-ss-hydroxyäthylrest der Formel
EMI1.2
wobei R4 Wasserstoff, eine Methylolgruppe oder eine Alkoxymethylgruppe mit 1 bis 6 Kohlenstoff atomen darstellt ;
EMI2.1

Process for the production of -Carbamyl-hydroxyäthylammen and their use
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of ß-carbamyl-ß-hydroxyethylamines of the formula
EMI1.1
wherein A is an s-carbamyl-ss-hydroxyethyl radical of the formula
EMI1.2
where R4 represents hydrogen, a methylol group or an alkoxymethyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms;
n zero or an integer, Ri for any values of n, the radical R2 or, if n is equal to zero, hydrogen, a hydroxyl or
Alkylol group or the radical -N (R2) 2; R is the group A, hydrogen or an alkyl,
Alkylol or alkoxymethyl group with 1 to 6
Carbon atoms; and R3 is an alkylene group with 2 to 12 carbon atoms, where the molecule of the formula I should contain at least two of the A radicals.
The invention was based on the object, by preparing these compounds of the formula I, to enrich the technology with agents for masking heavy metal cations by complex formation in aqueous solution, which have a higher complex-binding capacity and which are more versatile than the agents known for this purpose .
It has been found that the compounds of the formula I are obtained if a glycidamide of the formula
EMI1.3
with an amine of the formula
EMI1.4
in which at least one of the radicals Ri or R2 is hydrogen, is converted.
The most important starting compound of the formula III is, in particular, glycidamide (R4 = H); N-methylolglycidamide (R4 = CH20H) and its alkyl ethers, as defined, are also suitable.
Examples of the starting compounds of the formula IV are ammonia (R1 = R2 = H; n = O); Hydrazine (R1 = NH2; n = O); N, N-dimethylhydrazine (R1 = -N (-CH3) 2; n = O); N, N'-dimethylhydrazine (Ri = -NHCH3; R2 = CH3; n = O); Hydroxylamine (Rl = -OH; R = H; n = O); the CQ-Cs-alkylenediamines (Rs = R2 = H; R3 = C2 - C6-alkylene; n = 1), the low-molecular alkylene polyamines (Ri = R2 = H; R = C2-Cs- alkylene; n = 2- 5) and polyethyleneimine (Ri = R2 = H; R3 = ethylene; n> 5).
Most of the compounds of the formula IV are known or can be obtained by known methods.
The process products of the formula I are the better complexing agents, the greater the ratio of the number of groups A to the number of basic nitrogen atoms and the greater the ratio of the number of these nitrogen atoms to the number of C atoms in formula IV.
The following compounds of the formula I, which are based on ammonia, hydroxylamine, hydrazine, ethylenediamine, propylenediamine-1,2, propylenediamine-1,3, ethanolamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine and tetraethylenepentamine as amines of the formula IV, should therefore be particularly emphasized:
EMI2.1
and the reaction products of polyethyleneimine and sufficient glycidamide of the formula III that an average of 10 to 100 ouzo of all active H atoms on the N atoms are replaced by the radical A.
The compounds of the formulas III and IV are reacted with one another by the methods known per se for the addition of epoxy compounds to amines, specifically in the molar ratios corresponding to the proportion A in the molecule of the compound of the formula I to be prepared in each case.
When carrying out the process, it has proven useful to introduce the compound of the formula III in the form of 10 to 50% strength aqueous or alcoholic solutions, including preferably in methanolic solutions, and to add the amine IV at 30 to 80 ° C., specifically with or without solvents. The end of the reaction, which usually lasts 1 to 5 hours, can be recognized by the subsidence of the exothermic heat release.
In those cases in which the compound of the formula I is intended to contain N-methylol or N-methylol ether groups, a technically equivalent embodiment of the process is of course to introduce these groups into the reaction product in question only after the reaction of III with IV. In this case, the radicals R1, R2 and R4 in III and IV would mean hydrogen at least to the extent that this corresponds to the desired degree of methylolation or alkoxymethylation. Methylolation and alkoxymethylation can be carried out in a known manner by reacting the compounds in question with formaldehyde or
Formaldehyde and alcohols.
The compounds I are strong complexing agents for heavy metal ions, including especially iron III ions.
They are therefore mainly used as a masking agent for iron in aqueous solutions and suspensions where the iron would otherwise interfere, for example in the paper industry. Per gram of solid substance, at 20 C and at pH values between 2 and 12, they are able to mask the astonishingly high amount of 0.4 to 3.5 g Fe + + +, while this ability to about 0 at lower and higher pH values , 1 g decreases, but remains in the technically usable and above all economic range until pH 1 or 13. These values are not reached at 100 C, but at around 40 to 95 / o of the values applicable for 20 C they are unexpectedly high here too.
In general, 0.1 to 2 times the amount by weight of masking agent I is used, based on the Fe +++ content.
Since the agents still have a quantitative effect even in high dilution, the same relationships apply to the concentrations in the aqueous solution, i.e. H. If the content of the iron to be masked is between about 0.005 and 0.01 I / o, as is usually the case in the paper industry, the associated concentrations of the masking agent are between 0.002 and 0.02/0. In the case of other heavy metals such as B.
Nickel, cobalt, iron (II), chromium (III) or aluminum, which have a lower affinity for the agents according to the invention than iron (III), increase the required amounts and concentrations, generally by about a power of ten. These values apply in the event that the metals are ionic; If, on the other hand, they are in the form of solid compounds, the required amounts of the complexing agent can increase again, depending on the particle size, up to concentrations of about 0.1%.
For analytical purposes, it is often necessary to mask relatively large amounts of iron (III) in a concentration of up to about 0.5 ″ / piger so that the detection of other components such as alkaline earth metals is not disrupted.
Here too, the products of the process of the invention serve well.
According to previous observations, the complex-forming effect of the compound I is based on the structure
EMI3.1
the nature of the radicals on the nitrogen atoms is of minor importance within the given definitions. As a result, it is also possible to use all compounds I which contain various substituents R1 or R2 or R3 or R4, as is possible above all when n is greater than zero and the compounds contain several A radicals. Mixtures of different compounds I are of course also suitable, so that one can advantageously start from technical amine mixtures IV for their preparation.
It should also be emphasized that the compounds available according to the invention as masking agents are well tolerated by other agents and that the effect is impaired by the presence of other chemicals, eg. B. of oxidizing agents for the oxidation of Fie ,, to Fe + + +, could not be observed so far and, as a rule, need not be feared. This immensibility is u. a. therefore of particular advantage because it allows successful combination with other masking agents, e.g. B. with those of the ethylenediaminetetraacetate type, which respond primarily to alkaline earth metals, or with sorbitol, whereby the complex binding capacity in the alkaline range is considerably increased.
Examples
In each case about 40% aqueous or methanolic solutions of m moles of the glycidamide (III) were admixed with 1 mole of an amine (IV) over the course of 1 to 2 hours while cooling at room temperature, the process product (I) largely crystallizing out Reaction batches were worked up as usual; the yields were y / o.
In those cases in which I contains N-methylol groups, these groups were introduced into the reaction product of III (R4 = H) and IV in the customary manner with p moles of formaldehyde (added as an aqueous solution).
The elementary anylses of I corresponded to the calculated values within the error limits.

100 ml each of an aqueous solution containing 100 mg of solid matter from the process products of some examples,
were titrated at 20 and 100 C and at various pH values with a 0.01 / o iron (III) chloride solution until iron (III) hydroxide began to precipitate, from which it was possible to calculate how many mg of iron (III) 100 mg of the agents concerned are able to mask. After one or more attempts, the titration endpoints were set at those points at which the just perceptible precipitate did not change any more, even at 20 C after 24 hours or 3 hours at 100 C below the relevant pH values, i.e. neither disappeared again nor more strongly has been.
The values obtained are summarized in the following table.
100 mg of the process product of the respective example mask at T C and at pH values 5 to 13 x [mg] Fe +++
